4 comments about Collie Concept.
- I have owned this book since it came out new....wish I'd bought two - one to read...one to save. My copy is so beaten up that it is a shame...but I actually have read it cover to cover thirty or more times. I read and re-read this one again and again. It is a great reference book, too. If you need to know it....it is here.
- I bought this book under the advise of other collie breeders some time ago. It was told to me that it was the bible of the Collie World. I have found that not only was that true but more.
Not only did it help with breeding but raising as well. This is a must for anyone getting into Collies for any reason. I give this 10X more stars then whats offered. You'll love it.
- It took me close to 3 years to track down this book. I finally got it, read it and by the way, enjoyed it. It contains basics (to me anyway) about colour inheritance, structure, history, health, and a little on grooming and showing. This book will stay in my kennel's bookshelf for a long time. (And no, I'm not a year old.)
- This is a wonderful and informative book. It is chock full of pictures of collies as early as the first known collie in the USA right through some of the more recent and important collies we know today. You will find advice on how to pick a collie puppy, and how to get it registered with AKC. There is information about common collie health problems as well as advice on how to train your collie. It really is the collie owners handbook.

3 comments about The Jack Russell Terrier: Courageous Companion (Howell's Best of Breed Library).
- I am a Jack Russell Terrier owner, and I happen to know Catherine Romaine Brown. I've witnessed her devotion to this unique breed. For many years, and currently, she's served on the Board of Directors of the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America, (JRTCA,) the premier registry of Jack Russells in the United States.
Catherine and her dogs regularly participate in agility, go-to-ground, conformation, and other disciplines at Jack Russell Terrier trials. She is in demand as a judge at sanctioned trials nationwide and internationally. In my opinion, this book is the definitive guide to JRT ownership.
- In this book, Catherine Brown gives readers a true account of life with a Jack Russell Terrier. I have done Jack Russell Terrier rescue for several years, and have shared my home with many Jack Russell Terriers and can appreciate every single word she writes about this challenging and fun-loving breed. Her description of their true nature, along with her complete honesty about the breed, is exactly what people considering this unique little dog need to know. Readers will find all qualities of the Jack Russell, good and bad, in this book. I will be sending a copy of this book home with each person that purchases one of our puppies. I highly recommend it to Jack Russell enthusiasts and to anyone even considering sharing their life with these "thugs in white clown suits." It gives an excellent history of the development of this versatile hunting terrier, and provides wonderful insight into it's origins and purpose. A must have for any Jack Russell fan!
- Ms. Brown offers a comprehensive view of life with the average Jack Russell Terrier; she also warns us that there is no such thing as an "average" Jack Russell. The information is presented with humor and genuine admiration for this quirky, sturdy and brazen breed. The text is complimented with stunning color photographs of dogs and puppies in action. Ms. Brown also highlights some of the great foundation dogs and it is always a thrill to find one in your new pup's pedigree. This is a wonderful first book for those considering a JRT, and we veteran owners appreciate a reference book that looks beautiful on the coffee table -- it is a welcome relief from the dead mice our JRTs leave for us under our beds!

5 comments about The Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting and Owning a Dog.
- A must read for every dog owner, and future dog owner. Consider it to be a course in Introductory Dog 101. Simple, yet it works. Wish it had been there, when my first dog joined our household. Would have saved many anxious moments, plus the rugs. Arlene Millman, author of BOOMERANG - A MIRACLE TRILOGY (The tale of a remarkable Boston Terrier).

- This book is must for every potential or real dog owner's bookshelf! Ms. Boneham does an excellent job of helping you through the steps of choosing and living with your dog. The book is an excellent source of of information itself and includes many references, both on the Web and otherwise. In the future, this book will be part of all my puppy's going-to-their-new-home bag.
- Actually this is a great book to have if you plan on getting a dog or you already own a dog. Easy to read and understand. It covers everything from A-Z on caring for your dog from a young puppy to the senior citizen. I will recommend this book to all my puppy, basic and advance students.
- Despite its title, "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting and Owning a Dog," isn't for idiots at all. Instead, people who buy it will be savvy dog owners with a plethora of information at their fingertips. I hope people will buy this book before they buy their dog.
This new book by Sheila Webster Boneham is an especially good one for those who have never owned a dog before, or who may have had a dog, but who didn't explore all the facets of dog ownership. She offers a lot of suggestions about what to consider before getting a dog. She covers everything from selecting a breed that fits your lifestyle, to what supplies you need to get when you bring your pet home. In a chapter on "Size and Other Big Decisions," she asks the important question, "What do you want from your dog?" Many people don't consider this before they bring that cute puppy home, yet the answers will determine whether you have a dog you love, but don't like, or have the perfect canine soul mate. Boneham handles potentially controversial topics -- like vaccinations and feeding methods -- fairly and objectively. So new owners are aware of the pros and cons, and more importantly where and how to get more information. Her chapter on "What Every Dog Should Know" has good advice on training and reinforcement. She urges her readers to take their dogs to at least one good obedience class. There is a helpful list suggesting how to tell if an instructor is qualified to teach the class. One suggestion is to not be shy about asking the instructor what her credentials are. As an obedience instructor, I would love to have someone ask me this, because it gives me a chance to brag about my dogs, and the dogs of former students. A special gem of information is in a section on "Living with more than one dog." "If you try to apply human ideas about equality and fairness to your family of dogs, you create confusion. For instance, if you try to treat the dogs equally and you alternate who gets a treat first 'to be fair' you undermine the dominant or alpha dog's position. In a pack, the alpha eats first, gets the best bed and controls the resources. If your alpha dog is hogging the chewy toys and you take them from him and divvy them up, you again undermine his position." So many people do not understand this concept, so it is especially valuable to have it explained in this book for new dog owners. There's also a nice chapter on canine medical emergencies, including what to include in a first aid kit. The jacket notes indicate that Boneham competes in a variety of dog sports with her dogs, and does dog-assisted therapy as well. This experience comes through in her well-written book. All in all, this is a terrific book, at a great price, and one I can heartily recommend to new dog and puppy owners.

1 comments about Dog Whisperer: The Essential Guide to Understanding and Raising a Happy Dog.
- I bought this book along with about 15 others on dog-person relationships about 18 months ago, charmed by the title. It was a mistake.
This well-meaning book is so basic that it could only be useful to people who are absolutely new to the canine world, but look out: unfortunately, much of the advice aimed at 'beginners' is dangerously simplistic.
An example ? In the chapter entitled "choosing the best friend for you", the authors mention as sources for puppies "breeders", "pet shops", "newspapers" and "animal welfare shelters". (No mention is made of breed rescue associations or of the fact that Internet now allows you to make a thorough search for information on breeds and a first screening of available breeders and what might be the right breed for your lifestye). The real problem, though is the superficial information: under "Pet shops", which are notorious abusers of puppies and tend to buy puppies from abusive 'puppy farms', the authors wrote: "Your local pet shop is another fine source for acquiring your puppy. Pet shops normally are located in convenient areas such as your local shopping center. You will find the puppies are well cared for and you will have a large choice of various breeds in one easy to reach location."
I was staggered by the irresponsibility of this statement. Forget finding the right puppy of the litter for you, forget 'puppy testing': this is an INVITATIOn to buy a dog based on its looks, a throw-away dog from your local shopping center. I couldn't believe that 'easy to reach location' can even be mentioned as a criterion !!!!! Puppies in the shop window almost NEVER receive adequate socialisation, and present a vast range of problems, including toilet training difficulties.
Sure, the authors are Australian (they mention kangaroo meat as a possible part of your dog's diet) and I'm sure that the distances between cities, etc. make 'convenience' appetising. It may well be, too, that Australian law does not allow puppy farms and that all pet stores are run according to incredible quality standards. Nonetheless, I found this advice shocking, and it is an example of how well-meaning but utterly stupid some of the advice this book gives is. No true "experts" would ever offer this advice !!!!
Much of the advice given is outdated information on 'dominance' theory. The only positive point is that the writers attempt to promote a wishy-washy form of positive reinforcement training, but in a way so simplified as to not give readers a true background and reliable knowledge. What a disappointment.
Charming illustrations by Ms. Cole---- but that's not enough.
If you're looking for true help in training your dog, start with 'The Other End of the Leash' !

- This is not a great informative book, however, it does have some beautiful, whimsical and cute photographs of Golden Retreivers. Occassionally, it also is thought provoking in a sentimental or philosophical sense. Worth having on your coffee table or in your reception area.

5 comments about The Siberian Husky.
- Wonderful Book, Great Photography, Quality Presentation and Appearance. Good Information, Unbiased and Covers Many Subjects of Concern or Intrests.
- A very good general background book for the Siberian Husky owner. This book has beautiful color photos. Shows various markings and colors of Huskies, describes in detail Breed Standard + Show expectations. Tells the history of this breed and explains why a Husky may not be the best dog for everyone. The Siberian Husky is a beautiful, intellegent + spirited dog. Reading this book, you can tell that it's author really loves them.
- I purchased a siberian husky 1 year ago and wanted to learn as much as I could about the breed. This book says it all. I have bought several other books, and basically they stink. This book is well written, has beautiful pictures and truely says how a husky is. If you are thinking of purchasing a husky or already own one, and want some help in understanding your dog - this book is for you. Cannot say enough about this book. If I could give it more than five stars I would.
- Describing the Siberian Husky as being too intelligent, clean, charming and clownish, and mentioning their strong need for company, their greatness in digging up your lawn, ignoring your calls, and loving children, dogs and burglars alike, makes me recognise my affectionate friend in every aspect of this great new book. It provides extensive background on the history of "the little Chukchi dogs", from the people that bred these dogs as an integral part of their lives to their appearance in Alaska sledding races. The book describes how a healthy husky should look, how to be groomed, showed and taken care of. The book also warns of treating huskies as "hairy, little people", instead of wolf-like, noble dogs with a sledding heritage that should rather be trained firmly. When you have always wanted to own a husky, or have purchased one already, the book is an enjoying read about wonderful husky moments, making you definitely laugh when you realise they ALL bolt after the squirrel across the road. It also provides a great guide for those considering purchasing a husky, describing all the needs of this beautiful dog breed. This book is all about understanding your (future) companion, and making them and yourself happiest!
- This book is amazing; there are interesting facts about Siberian Husky history [did you know they were turned loose by the tribe that bred them and hunted freely in packs for part of the year?], anatomy [the 'stop', or angle where their snout joins their face, has to be at a precise degree so air can warm up and lungs will not be frostbitten when working in the snow], and tons of useful information for sibe novices and experts alike. I recommend this book ENTHUSIASTICALLY to anyone who owns or is thinking of owning a Siberian!
