5 comments about The New Complete Alaskan Malamute.
- This book is full of great history on the breed and information on how to show and sled your dog (once you get to that stage in growth and training!). If you have or are bringing home a new puppy it is not the book for you. I searched for this book because it was recommended to me. I think now that recommendation was only because this certain breeder had a few "mentions" in the book. I am looking for NOW information on my new puppy. This book is great for my friends who stop by -- they look at the pictures.
- If you already own a malamute or are thinking of getting one this book prvides the best guide for you. It not only tells you the pros about the breed but also the cons, and gives you a realistic look on what the breed is about. Ignorance leads to problems with malamutes so the best way to prepare yourself is HAVE THIS BOOK!!! Remember Owning A Malamute Is Not A Right! It Is A Privillage! Jamie Wiatowski, Mimmenuk Alaskan Malamutes
- The New Complete Alaskan Malamute is exactly what the title implies, a compendium of facts and relative information about the breed. Covered are aspects of the history, personality of the breed, sledding, backpacking, medical/genetic issues, grooming, the breed Standard interpreted, a glossary of terms, and much much more. For the prospective or fisrt-time owner, and even long term fancier, this book is a gem for the wealth, depth and breadth of information. Acquisition of this notable work is a must for all fanciers.
- This is an Excellent book on Alaskan Malamutes. We presently own 3 Mals and are getting our first show Malamute in Dec. of 1997. I highly recommend this book to those who are getting their first Alaskan Malamute or people that already have one. It covers everything from the beginning of the Alaskan Malamute, showing conformation, obedience, medical problems, to sledding with these wonderful dogs.
- For a first time mal owner this book would be just Ok, not one of the top three to buy, however, I personally am a history buff and this is a must and it gives back ground of why mals act the way they do or do not do something. I like it.

5 comments about Dog Training: The Gentle Modern Method.
- I bought and read this book about 2 weeks before my Queensland Heeler came home. Within 2 days (he was 7 weeks old at the time) he was house trained and would "come" when we called him. Now at 8 weeks I began teaching him to "sit" and "drop". It literally only took about 5 minutes. I truly believe this is the best method of training a dog. I don't feel bad because I'm choking him or yelling or anything. He wants to do the exercises he's been trained to do. As a society we have been misinformed to think we have to train or dogs using archaic, somewhat violent means. I encourage everyone to at least try this method and if it works for you, pass it on to any pet owner you know. We can make happier, less aggressive dogs.
- I highly recommend this book. It was very useful to me. Each exercise includes pictures to show exactly how it should look, including hand signals. There were several obedience areas where my dog was not responding to the way my obedience instructor was teaching the commands, and some areas that weren't covered. I tried using the methods in the book, and she responded very quickly and learned the exercises. This book is great for people who don't want to use harsh methods or who have sensitive dogs. This book is also very useful for training puppies, where only positive reinforcement should be used. The step-by-step directions make it good for beginners.

- I really enjoyed this book as it shared my feelings of repect and care for animals. Especially our most domesticated friend the dog. I have used these methods offered in this book and know that they work.I would really love to know if there is an e-mail address for the auther of this book or his Kintala Club as I live in New Zealand and there is not a strong level of support offered here for this kind of practise. Particularly the socalising before tweleve weeks and immunisation. I would recommand this book to anyone considering a puppy or dog and to read it first so they know and understand their responsiblities as a dog owner and for the best they cangive their dog. Yours Helen from New Zealand.
- David Weston's method of dog training follows right along in the modern tradition of "operant conditioning," which I had not heard of before reading this book. Therefore it was not a previous bias which caused me to discount the method as completely inappropriate to dog training! A dog is not a lab rat, to be "shaped" unwittingly by the presence or absence of food. It is disrespectful to your dog to assume so. However, if all you want is the behavior and you don't care about the rapport, or if you have a particularly sensitive dog that doesn't respond well to "traditional" methods, this book is an easy to follow manual of how to make it at least appear obedient.

1 comments about Dog: A Dog's Life in Art and Literature.
- Another in the series of memorable art books fromWatson-Guptill, "DOG" follows the format of"CAT", "ZOO", and in cogent writing, excerpts ofpoetry and literature, all to tie together an exploration of how we have viewed dogs through the eyes of artists over the past several hundred years. Etruscan sculpture from 500 BC is placed beside photographs by Muybridge, medieval tapestries, paintings ranging from Bruegel, Bosch, Durer, to David Hockney, Miguel Conde, and other fresh contemporary young painters. Author Iain Zaczek has a scholarly but endearing writing style that allows this litle book to sing. For the legions of dog owners this is a sensitive celebration. As a means to introduce children (of all ages!) to fine art, this is a valuable tome. END

2 comments about Papillon (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).
- I have owned five senior "rescue Paps" in the past six years. Now I have a 15 month old puppy and a nine year old Pap who had been the alpha dog, but that was before we got our baby. This is like nothing I have experienced before or in many, many years...its like having a baby whose every action depends on me. To say she's a joy is to put it mildly, she's a nuisance, but I love it and having this book as my handy reference has been a life saver. I have had seniors in the past who just joined the household, but this tiny little Pap whose energy is almost overwhelming.. . and this book have helped when I wondered if I had done the right thing.
- This is quite a good book if you are completely new to the breed and plan to read other books as well... There are some factual mistakes (like when the author describes the Phalène-variation of the breed - completely wrong) but there are also some good general information. I wouldn't recommend it though. There are other books better to read (the Complete Papillon) for those interested in these wonderful toy dogs.

4 comments about Runner's World Guide to Injury Prevention: How to Identify Problems, Speed Healing, and Run Pain-Free (Runner's World Guides).
- My husband said the book was very helpful when he ran in the Atlanta 10k.
- I bought this book for a Runner/Biker/Marathon-enter(er)... and he loved it! He was interested in the material, info, and said the book was a GREAT read!
- I was expecting more in-depth information on running injuries, but this booked contained less information than a lot of other general running books.
For example this morning I referenced the book on hamstring injuries, and the only information they had on hamstrings was on stretching.
Very disappointed in the content.
- Injury Prevention: Barrios takes the reader through details of injuries and preventions for most runners. The author offers cross-training to help prevent injuries and help speed up the healing process.
Recommended for all runners at all fitness levels to help understand the causes of injuries and the training protocol to prevent them from occuring again and again.

5 comments about Sweetie : Tantalizing Tips from a Furry Fashionista.
- The idea of a dog venturing forth from humble beginnings (about as humble as they come) into the spotlight - who doesn't love a rags to riches story? The illustrations are as charming as the story she tells; Sweetie's insights into the fashion world are original (a dog's point of view, of course!) - as are many of her beauty tips. A very entertaining and enjoyable read.
- From pet-lovers to fashion-lovers to anyone who loves a good laugh, Sweetie charms them all. Her voice is brought to life by Mark Welsh's wonderfully witty and insightful writing, while Rubin Toledo's drawings sing with color and pizzazz!
I read the book with my daughter first, and then had to keep picking it up in the evenings for more. (When do we get to see "Sweetie...The Movie?!") Sweetie is a truly engaging character. I, for one, will be buying a copy for everyone on my gift list this holiday!
- Very clever ,very New York. Wonderful little snippets of wisdom from our little sister...Of a girl we can all relate to...a sweet little broad navigating the perils of the beyond, beyond NY glam scene..A little bottom line for all us nervous femmes in these terrible times...good giggle is what we all can do with. Universally humorous..Some calssic lines I intend to steal..My French friends love her..
- I literally stole this book from an 8 year old! This book was so darn cute I couldn't stop laughing and reading passages aloud to my husband. I will buy several copies and of course return the one to the little girl.
I would love to have a steak and martini with Sweetie. I will keep up with Mark Welsh's work from now on. Sweetie, you go girl!
- Sweetie is the funniest book that I have ever read about the fashion industry! Sweetie tells all there is to know about being a huge star, like the importance of wearing clanky jewelry so that you fans will know when you are arriving. Sweetie even lets you read the steamy details of her past love affairs, not to mention and insider view of her dressing rooms around the globe! She's a busy dog alright , and dont go looking for any deep meaningful writing but Sweeetie's book is sure to give you a double dose of all the fun, fabulous, hyjinx and hysterics that fashion industry has to offer!

4 comments about How to Buy and Raise a Good Healthy Dog.
- I bought this book years ago and it has been a constant companion. It contains information on all aspects of dog care.
It explains, in easy to understand terms, how to find a reputable breeder, dog care, breeding info, dog health and so much more.
Terri was a exceptional breeder and a true pioneer in the dog field. She gave all she had to benefit Liver Shunt research so our animals would not have to die needlessly.
I LIKE TO GIVE THIS TO ALL MY YORKIE BUYERS but it is getting harder to find since her death last year.
- This is a great book! Terri covers every aspect of finding, buying, training, breeding, and caring for a dog. Lots of up-to-date easy to understand detailed information. Extra information on toy breeds including Yorkies. I bought a few extra books and gave them to friends.
- Terri Shumsky's years of solid experience show through in this fabulous guide for both pet owners and those who breed dogs.
This book offers practical advice in easy to understand language. And her advice applies to pure bred dogs and those of uncertain parentage. Everyone who has a dog should read this book. Everyone who is thinking about getting a dog most definitely should read it.
- Well, Mrs. Shumsky has done it again with her second book, but too a much wider audience of dog readers. I read her first book, " How to Buy and Raise Your Toy Dog", but this one covers that one plus alot more and is so well indexed with a blink of an eye you can find whatever you are looking for. From finding a good, reputable breeder, to raising the pup to adulthood, feeding and training, along with medical problems, along with solving and learning about many medical problems, and a real special section for breeders which covers the pregnant female to the actual whelping and aftercare of Mom and puppies. It is a wonderful read and very easy to follow and understand. Thank you Terri Shumsky for another wonderful book to help us and our canine friends.

5 comments about The Lost History of the Canine Race: Our 15,000-Year Love Affair With Dogs.
- This well-researched, entertaining and readable book makes a subtle omission. While laying out a convincing case for the wolf origins of domestic dogs, there is little discussion of how early canines migrated from their beginnings in Asia to every continent. The early chapters shift focus from stone age times in Europe to the civilisation of Ancient Egypt, where, the author states, exotic dogs such as Basenjis were "imported" from Africa (overlooking the fact that Egypt is in Africa). How did Asian wolves become African Basenjis? And how did wolves come to Australia?
Unfortunately, Africa is not mentioned in the book's index, making an indexed study of "The Lost History" difficult.
- After getting past the very unpleasant history of Man and Dog..., well it wes never truly finished. But the book is an excellent read and has a place on your book shelf. She presents some interesting modern potential actions that us dog people can take, too. Last chapter and the one on war-dogs was the best.
- this is a wonderful book about dog orgins, i read it several years ago, and bought my own copy, a delightful read with lots of information.
- I'm a dog lover and thought I knew everything canine. Apparently not! This book is chuckfull of information and trivia. I especially enjoyed the chapter on US Army dogs and how unfair the US government has been to them. A must read!
- The dedication of Mary Elizabeth Thurston's book says it all. She dedicated this book to her grandmother, who taught her the importance of spoiling dogs. This is a person who knows the love of sharing their life with their dog, and writes about dogs from her heart and soul. I think the chapter that stirred the deepest interest was the Dogs of War. These brave dogs and their handlers have often been forgotten, but in Thurston's book they are not only remembered, but truly honored for their contribution to the freedom we enjoy today. Thank you for writing, not just a informational book, but one that shows how much our lives are intermingled with our canine companions.
