5 comments about Clicker Fun: Dog Tricks and Games Using Positive Reinforcement.

  1. There is another book, Peggy Tillman's Clicking with your dog,
that often gets the press, but this is a much better book. Dr. Jones talks about how to get a non-interested dog interested in clicking and how to move up from there. Tillman's book gives every task a name though often does not discuss how to group them and make them into new combinations. Dr. Jones has no problem with grouping, re-grouping, organising and such activities.

This book has plenty of activities which you can start with and use for either performance or comfirmation activities plus a weekly planner. She gives lots of 'shaping' tips and problem solutions. A superb training manual. Sorry it's op.

  2. I review dog books. This is a seriously good book. Buy it! Dr. Ian Dunba

  3. I bought this book on the recommendation of my dog trainer. I had never trained a dog before. I wanted to do everything right from the beginning. My charming and energetic Jack Russel responded immediantly! I am having so much fun with my new friend. Thank you, Ms. Jones, for sharing your insight with others!

  4. This little book is jam packed with great ideas for tricks - new and old.Readers will not only be able to teach their dogs tricks using friendly, fun, and fast techniques, they'll soon figure out that clicker training works - for any facet of dog training. This is a great way to build a relationship with your dog, and Deb Jones has made it even easier. This book is also a great teacher's aid for anyone teaching others how to train their dogs. The tricks and games are easily incorporated into a classroom setting, and Deb Jones even includes a four week insutructors guide for those wanting to set up their own tricks classes.

  5. Deb Jones' book is one of the easiest to understand clicker training books out there. The science of operant conditioning is explained in layman's language, and the examples are down-to-earth. The tricks and games Dr. Jones describes are fun to teach any dog and will lay the foundation for further work in clicker training.

5 comments about Living with a Boxer.

  1. I directly asked Ms Hannibal about the comment. "Smart" in the UK does not mean intelligence. She meant it as a "look". Her meaning was that white Boxers do not have the same look at fawn or brindle Boxers. Take it for what it's worth, but she did not mean American readers to read she was saying a white Boxer is less intelligent than a fawn or brindle Boxer.

Those that wrote the 2 comments against that single line in the book are Americans and thusly would have read it differently than someone in the UK. Ms Hannibal assured me she has no ill feelings towards white Boxers at all. I single line of misunderstanding does not undermine the entire content of this book. I would not have lent my precious photos to her efforts if I felt she harbored ill will towards Boxers.

  2. Im very pleased that a few of our dogs are featured in this book, as well as a writeup on our kennel, CINEMA BOXERS.
Its a great book for the person considering a boxer, and offers great info on choosing a breeder, training, and ownership.
Our Firestar's Raisin Nell, HiMasters Fired Up At Cinema, and Cinema's Ecco Domani are featured.

  3. The publishing house putting together this series of books made a poor choice in the author for this volume. She loses all credibility when she makes the outrageous statement that white boxers aren't as smart as fawns or brindles. No scientific data supports this view and anyone who has shared his home with white boxers, as well as the others, knows it is untrue. The opinion of the author would be laughable if it didn't prejudice prospective owners and keep so many bright, sweet white boxers from finding the loving homes they deserve.

  4. On page 12 of this book is this quote regarding all white boxers (approx 25% of all boxers born) "They (white boxers) are perfectly acceptable as companion dogs although they do not resemble the typical, smart Boxer that most people imagine". I don't know where Ms. Hannibal got her information from but white boxers are at least as smart as fawn or brindle dogs - the original boxers were white, and many white boxers hold agility, obedience, tracking and schutzhund titles. They also are EXACTLY the same as the colored boxers in personality (I've had the pleasure of being owned by both). If a statement this wildly erroneus is in the book - how can you trust the rest of what is says??

  5. I am honored my boy has been chosen to grace the cover of this book: Am/Int'l Ch Rosend's Booker T, CGC TT. Several other PawPrint Boxers are illustrated: Ch PawPrint's Do Right By Me, Ch PawPrint's Plainly Spoken and Ch PawPrint's Seduction.

2 comments about Triathlon Swimming Made Easy: How Anyone Can Succeed in Triathlon (Or Open-Water Swimming) With Total Immersion.

  1. Like many people, I was skeptical about this book. How could I truly learn to swim better from reading a book. But after reading this and practising the techniques I am a believer. I am a triathlete, albeit a 50 year old slow triathlete. But I began as a swimmer, so I am very comfortable there. I am not fast, but love the water. But this book has made me a better swimmer. It's in the economy of stroke. This book will teach you a way of swimming that's more like yoga or TM than those swimmers you see flailing their arms and being out of breath. This won't happen overnight, but as the author says, if you practise at this long enough you will get better.

  2. This is the best book you can buy on swimming. Period. In fact, most triathlon training books refer the reader to Terry Laughlins Total Immersion (TI) program, which is explained most clearly in this book. (Don't buy the out-dated book entitled "Total Immersion." I've read it; it's good; but it doesn't fully reflect the author's most recent ideas on swimming drills.)

When you buy the book, you should also order the video "Fishlike Freestyle," which shows all the drills beautifully executed by top-notch swimmers. (In fact, the "models" in the video make the drills look TOO easy.)

If you read the book, follow the program, and execute the drills according to the video, you'll become an excellent swimmer. It might take you several months or even a year or two, but eventually you'll do it. Personally, I'm still working at it--slowly--but a friend of mine went from being a terrible swimmer to being a beautiful, smooth, fast fishlike triathlete in the water by following the Total Immersion program. Several other of my triathlete friends have used the Total Immersion program with excellent success. You can spot these swimmers for the grace and fluidity as they glide effortlessly through the water.

If you're serious about swimming or triathlon, this book is a must buy.

2 comments about Norwich Terrier.

  1. This is a good book to have if you own a Norwich Terrier.
There are not to many books on the Norwich.
The person who wrote the previous review spelled Norwich wrong.
Even in my Vet's computer the program has it spelled wrong.
Norwich is not even listed in the animal shelter's computer program.

  2. This book provides historical information on the Norwhich and general dog care information, that is standard in this series. The color pictures are a nice touch and show the Norwhich in their best adorable poses. It is good for the first time dog owner who may need general information on the Norwhich and general dog issues.

4 comments about The World of the Golden Retriever: A Dog for All Seasons.

  1. I tend to go overboard when buying books on my favorite breed and have bought and read almost all the books listed here. This is my favorite of them all. It lists the great kennels in every aspect of the Golden community and has tons of pictures of specific individual dogs. This book will not leave my library. It has lots of information and great pictures. The price is high but it is worth spending the $.

  2. Out of the 10+ books I currently have on GR's this is BY FAR the best one. The pictures are incredible along with all the wonderful chapters discussing the many facets of the GR. Incredibly well written and designed. This is one book you will want to keep forever as a reference book and as a collectors edition. It also makes a super coffee table book, a birthday present, a Christmas gift, etc.

  3. I would rate this as an excellent book on golden retrievers. The thing that sets it apart from other breed books is it covers more then just conformation dogs. Field dogs, hunt test, obedience dogs and physical assistance dogs are given equal consideration. I use this as a guide and photo reference to many of the great dogs in the breed. There is ONE problem with this book. When I lend it to someone, I have a devil of a time getting it back.

  4. Covers every aspect of the breed and its accomplishments in the show ring, field, and home, as well as its utilization in detecting drug smugglers and arsonists. 480 pp. / 9x12 / 700+ color photos

4 comments about The Dog Redeemers: Finding Forever Homes.

  1. This book is a very helpful overview of John's techniques. It is succint which makes it a fast read. However, the publishing company must have hired an junior high student to do the editing. I had to stop myself from correcting all the spelling and mechanical errors in red pen. I am shocked that a publisher would allow a "rough draft" edition to be printed. I hope future printings are corrected.

  2. This book is fabulous! Not only does The Dog Redeemers tell you what to do but why you are doing it. I could see a difference in my dog's behavior in just a couple of days. I would encourage anyone that is having dog problems to get the book and follow the techniques religiously they work!

  3. Just to let you know, The Dog Redeemers techniques and methods were wonderful! Our rescue boxer had pack-order issues with our other 3 dogs. After just a few sessions with your methods, our female boxer no longer tries to assert herself, but has accepted herself into the pack, and is a wonderful addition to our family. Thank you so much. I cannot express how much the book has helped, and would encourage anyone who is having any kind of behavioral issues with their dogs to get the book. Thanks again!

  4. This book is a great tool for rehabilitating problem canines. Ten years in the making written about real life canine rescue experiences The Dog Redeemers provides hope and encouragement for the frustrated dog owner and canine rescue volunteer. Anyone involved with dogs should get a copy of the book; keep it as reference reviewing it least once a year. The best practices and behavior techniques covered in this book are invaluable and worth their weight in gold. They really work!

2 comments about Collies (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. Some good information, but a lot of the information could apply to any other breed. It's very easy to read and reads quickly. Would have given it 5 stars if it'd been a bit more in-depth and thicker. Good book, just needs to have more in it.

  2. The book is good for a beginning collie owner. Beautiful pictures. Wish they identified the dogs in the pictures. Took longer than any other order from or through Amazon.

5 comments about The Newfoundland (The Pure Breds Series).

  1. excellent, well written, packed full of info. Bought a few Newf-related books, and this is one of my favorites so far. I'd recommend.

  2. This book is not only a history but an encyclopedia of knowledge. Not only is this book for the prospective newf buyer but also for the owner/breeder who wants as much knowledge as they can learn about their breed. Great, great resource!!

  3. This has to be one of the best breed-specific books ever written.

  4. I purchased this book recently since I was getting a newfie pup for the first time. I have a golden too but I wanted specific information about the breed. I found it to be very informative, easy to read and understand. It has photos (which I like) that are of nice quality. It is a must for those who want to know more about this breed or want to have a good reference on hand.

  5. I have read, almost cover-to-cover Emmy Brunos book and it is, by far the most comprehensive book about ANY breed I have ever had the pleasure to read. She has lived with and bred these wonderful animals most of her life and shares most of her knowledge with us, the reader. I could care less about the pictures being black and white, get a good calendar if thats what you want, its the information that is so critical that she gives, and her love of the breed which oozes from every page. Her knowledge is vast and she holds nothing back. I have gone back to that book time and time again for many many answers that I have had. I recommend this book highly and a good calendar for pics if neccessary.

4 comments about K9 Officer's Manual.

  1. As a K-9 handler I found a good deal of information in this book to be on the mark. Though it is a short book by comparison, it is full of useful information for dog handlers. I highly recommend it.

  2. For any officer or department considering becoming a K9 officer or questioning the benefits with use of a K9 addition to the department, this book is a must have. An officer who had first hand experience wrote it and provides adequate information to assist in making a very informed decision regarding the use of K9 with the smallest to the largest organization. This book covers liability to officer and dog selection.
    Linda Connor
    Director Orting K9 Program

  3. I found this book to give in-depth information in an easy to follow format. Very well written, provides the needed material for current or aspiring canine officers.

  4. This book has good advice for people interested in the field of law enforcement with canine's. This book has a great wealth of information and is useful to those persuing a career in that field.

1 comments about The Art and Business of Professional Grooming.

  1. I not only read the book but knew the author from years back. She is a very meticulous and detailed person and has been in the business for over 30 years and also a breeder of toy poodles. So anything that Dorothy writes about this subject has to be very thorough and in comprehensive detail. If I were still breeding and showing poodles, I would continue to use this book for her expertise and would definately recommend this very informative book to the beginner and professional alike.
