2 comments about As It Is in the Days of Noah.

  1. Dr. Noah W. Hutchings is a prolific author of easy-to-read volumes written about history and prophecy who saw no reason to write an autobiography. He thought no one would want to read about him. Happily, I, along with several of his friends persuaded him to put part of his globe-trotting, hair-raising adventure-filled life to paper. The result is one of his best selling books ever. I was privileged to read the manuscript before the book went to press. I read through it twice before I could put it down. His humor is evident and the real life stories are amazing, enlightening, educational, and inspirational. This is a must read for any student of history or for anyone who enjoys a good story. Dr. Noah Webster Hutchings is now 80 and it is about time for a sequel! Great book!

  2. If you have any knowledge of Noah Hutchings this book was only increase your respect for him. It was a very honest and heartwarming story of his life. But it does not end there, if you would like to fill in all of those missing pieces in American history of the last 75 years, this book is a perfect tool to use to get you well on your way to understanding not only when events took place but also how they all interconnect with each other. A very honest look at peoples views and opinion of each other during those times in history. As an added bonus Noah keeps you laughing thoughout this great book!

5 comments about Out Of The Rough An Intimate Portrait Of Laura Baugh And Her Sobering Journey.

  1. Only someone who does not suffer from alcoholism would question the ability of a small woman to drink insane amounts of alcohol. I have no doubt that Laura Baugh drank every drink she says she did - I have been there. I, too, abstained during my pregnancies, it was the one time when I didn't struggle with myself over drinking or not drinking. This is a great story and I admire Laura for pulling herself out of the despair she felt - I know, I have felt it also.

  2. I find it very, very hard to believe that anyone, especially a small woman, could drink to the degree that Laura Baugh did and not sustain liver damage. She also says she abstained during her pregnancies...did she know the instant she was pregnant? I think not. I guess writing is an easier way to make a buck than playing golf.

  3. THIS IS THE STORY OF LAURA BAUGH, RECOVERING ALCOHOLIC, PRO GOLFER, AND MOTHER. SHE DOES A GREAT JOB DESCRIBING HER LIFE AND CAREER. HER STRUGGLE WITH INNER DEMONS, BROKEN MARRIAGES, AND PRESSURES IS VERY INTERESTING. HER STORY IS A MIRACLE. AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF THE 12 STEP PROGRAM OF AA AT WORK. LAURA HAS BEEN BLESSED BY GOD AND THIS IS A GREAT READ FOR ALL RECOVERING AND PRACTICING ADDICTED PEOPLE. I REMEMBER WHEN LAURA FIRST CAME ON THE PRO TOUR IN THE EARLY 70'S, SHE WAS THE HOTTEST HOTTIE IN SPORTS. GLAD TO SEE SHE HAS CONFRONTED HER ADDICTION AND DEALS WITH IT ONE DAY A TIME. SHE IS STILL HOT AND CERTAINLY PROVEN TO BE A BABY MACHINE. MUST READ.

  4. Isn't that the question since we were chldren? Who's in control here? Some figure it out quicker than others and learn the lesson better. For others, like Laura, it takes time and pain. But in the end, gain.

Her pain and gain, here exposed for all the world to see, is for the comfort and strength she gives through this book to those who find themselves or loved ones in -- out of control.

Frightening and shocking is the realization that such substances take over and dominate such intelligent, talented people. The fight will always be there. Close by though, more powerful than those unrelenting enemies are Laura's strengths she's learned to rely upon and live for, God and children. May both bless her.

She's a winner in more important events than just LPGA championships.

  5. Laura Baugh's openness and candor makes her story a must-read for anyone in recovery, or anyone who knows someone in recovery.

5 comments about Hope: A Story of Triumph.

  1. This is one of those amazing books that you can't put down! And although it can easily be read in one sitting, the insights and inspirations will stay with you for a lifetime.

In "Hope", Joel Rothschild describes his life (his struggles & his joys) since he was diagnosed with full blown AIDS - which was nearly 15 years before the writing of this book! In it, he shares what he's learned about the importance of living each day as if it's your last, as well as how your thoughts have a direct impact on your experiences - "as a man thinketh, so he is...".

I would highly recommend this book to everyone - it is very uplifting, and has a lot to offer each & every one of us.

Thank you Joel for taking the time to write this book!

  2. Joel Rothschild relates how he learned from others how to find "new meaning in times of mortal danger...I took those lessons to heart and began to search for ways to reinvent myself and give new meaning to my life."

Each of us has the opportunity to reinvent and redefine our lives when going through a major challenge or loss in our lives. Often, we don't seize it willingly, and instead let ourselves walk unconsciously through our healing. Joel Rothschild offers a path of awareness, a path of conscious choice for living a life with meaning, purpose and grace.

Through his own multitude of challenges, Mr. Rothschild has given us the gift of wisdom gained the hard way, or shall I say, the "heart" way. No other book that I have read in the last l0 years has stated so much, and so eloquently, what I have come to believe about life's lessons.

All suffering and pain has meaning and purpose. For me, I have had to experience several life challenges to feel the truth of this statement, to my very core. In his book, Joel Rothschild illustrates this so beautifully, and we are elevated by his faith and trust in the life process.

He states that "These days all people seem a little more beautiful." Thank you Joel for shining your light so brightly and allowing it to be the mirror for us to see ourselves more clearly!

    Marcia Breitenbach[...]

  3. After reading Hope I realized how insignificant the glitches (which I thought were problems)in my life really are. Knowing the suffering people with AIDS go through and everything they must endure really put things in perspective. I believe there is a message in this book for any reader who is seeking a greater understanding for compassion, inner peace and what the true meaning of unconditional love really is. When I read Hope I must admit, I cried, however the strenghts of the author filled me with light and "hope" for anything I might encounter in the future. Thank you Joel, you're truly an Angel in the lives of many people. Thank you HOPE for giving me the message I needed to hear at the time I read you.

  4. i read this after reading Joel's first book "signals". i read it at a time in my life when i was in despair, and this book helped my immeasurably. i would recommend it and encourage everyone to read it

  5. Hope is an inspiration to all! No matter what a persons present or past life situation, from the terminally ill, to those suffering through deep loss, to those of us who are blessed to be healthy. (As am I.) Joel has opened up his life and struggles to us to show that it is indeed possible to triumph over whatever life has to offer, transforming perceived diversities into tools for tremendous personnel growth. If you are as blessed as I am, to be in great health and have a great life, Hope will most assuredly fill you with gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon you. A wonderful book. Thank you Joel!

    Perfect Alzheimer's Caregiving Book
Brenda Avadian, MA (BrendaAvadian@TheCaregiversVoice.co), Caregiving Spokesperson & Author, December 11, 2006, PERFECT ALZHEIMER's CAREGIVING BOOK FOR THE HOLIDAYS! When overwhelmed caregivers cannot add one more thing to their hectic overburdened lives, Two Simple Words: "I Forget" is this holiday's gift-giving pick for the caregiver in your life. As a fellow author of Alzheimer's caregiving titles, Kane's book is the condensed version of "Where's my shoes?" My Father's Walk Through Alzheimer's. At 77 pages, Mindy Kane's Two Simple Words is a complete page-turning account touching on every step of the journey starting before diagnosis and ending as she remembers the way her late mother was before AD. You will find yourself exclaiming, "Yeah, that's the way my (loved one) is!" A must read, then spread the word!

  2. This book is so helpful and insightful. I wish I had discovered it long ago. This book gave me a tremendous amount of comfort and support and helped me come up with solutions to everday problems. The oreintation clock idea alone was extremely helpful. I STRONGLY recommend this book.

  3. My father was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's. I learned so much from this book about what to expect with this disease and what I needed to do to prepare for what was to come. This book is sure to be a classic in the Alzheimer's literature. It covers everything from diagnosis, to driving issues, to assisted living, to power of attorney. It has been an invaluable resource of information and I highly recommend it.

  4. My father had cancer and my mother had Alzheimer's and this book was SO helpful in dealing with both of their illnesses. It is short and simple and gives great advise mixed in with the author's own experiences. I would highly recommend this book for anyone dealing with a serious illness in a loved one!

  5. This book is fantastic. It tells the "inside story" of what it is like to live in an Alzheimer's family. I'm going to get a copy for all my friends and relatives so they can know what I'm really going through! A must read!

5 comments about Chang and Eng: A Novel.

  1. I read this last year. I have always been fascinated by twins and I thought that Darin Strauss did a wonderful job of fictionalizing the thoughts and perceptions of Chang and Eng Bunker the famous conjoined twins from Siam.

I enjoyed the personalities of the brothers and the voice that Strauss creates for Eng. I also enjoyed reading about this period in our history.

I thought it was a very interesting fictionalization and well written.

  2. Any reader who seeks out unusual topics of interest should give this a spin. Every time I come across this book somewhere, I smile and get queasy at the same time. I had to take a break here and there - I don't know if this was because it was so weirdly disturbing or if the story sometimes lost its flow. Nonetheless, it's definitely worth the read.

  3. This is an ambitious and intriguing debut novel, which is based upon conjoined twins, Chang and Eng, who were born in Siam during the nineteenth century. It is through them that the term "Siamese Twins" entered the vernacular. Here, the author takes known facts about these famous twins and weaves an expertly woven story about their lives, while attempting to individualize them, giving each of them their own distinct and unique personality.

The author tells the story of the conjoined twins through the first person narration of Eng. Born in 1811 in a house boat on the Mekong River in Siam, which is now known as Thailand, Chang and Eng entered the world linked together at the chest by a fleshy band of cartilage. It would be this short band of flesh that would forever bind them together, ensuring that they would never have a truly private moment. For their entire lives, they would be bound to each other, and the two would be forced to live as one.

The author explores their private and often strange lives, which the reader views through Eng's eyes. It is through his intimate thoughts that the reader envisions how the twins may have possibly viewed their own lives. The reader follows the path that their lives took, from their poverty stricken childhood on the Mekong River to their presentation to the King of Siam. It then shows how, as adolescents, they came to arrive in America, where they were displayed as oddities. Eventually, they became an international sensation, becoming nineteenth century celebrities.

Amazingly, they went on to marry two sisters, Adelaide and Sarah, with whom they fathered a total of twenty-one children. Chang and Eng set up house in North Carolina, where they raised their family. Still, this book is not so much about the factual portion of their lives, but rather, about the thoughts of Eng, as he and Chang pass through life together. It is a very intimate, insightful look at their lives and, in particular, the longings of Eng to experience life as most do, as one and not as two.

This is a well-written and delicately nuanced work of historical fiction that is highly imaginative. Instead of having the reader remain on the outside of the lives of Chang and Eng, looking in, the author manages to take the reader into their lives, having the reader look out onto the world from the perspective of Eng. Through Eng, the reader sees the twins as having two very distinct and unique personalities and realizes the angst that they must have experienced in never being able to have a truly private moment. At times, Chang and Eng appear to have had a love-hate relationship. This is a poignant and haunting look at these two individuals, who were, by necessity, constrained to live as one.

For those who are intrigued by the lives of Chang and Eng, but would prefer a purely biographical treatment, "The Two" by Irving Wallace and Amy Wallace is excellent and highly recommended.

  4. I just finished this book and was impressed!! It was an enjoyable bok to read. Lots of detail!! Its a great story and brings you right next to Chang and Eng.
I look forward to reading more from this author.

  5. Mr Strauss's story about the two Siamese twins Chang and Eng Bunker, linked at the chest, did actually live between 1811 and 1874. They were born in Siam, they met the King of Siam, they came to America and became celebrities, they married two sisters and were fathers of 21 children and lead a life as farmers in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. Mr Strauss's novel is not ruled by historical facts and thus most of its characters and situations are the product of his imagination, making "Chang and Eng" a true work of fiction. The author thoughtfully explores the questions of union and separation, of individual identity and of the means one has to share and protect one's identity.

1 comments about Confessions of a Modern Dentist.

  1. In this book, his story described love, happiness, and determination. He discussed personal experiences that scarred him for life, but serendipity played a role and helped him find his loving wife and discover his career as a dentist. He discussed his life as he struggled through dental school with his wife and two children. There were stories about working as the staff dentist at a community clinic and proceeding on to open his own practice. He discussed the transition and made it clear that it isn't easy to just start your own practice. Dr. Shinn spent some time substituting at the Seattle/King County Jail as a dentist. His practice started slow, he split up the day to incorporate a variety of patients. He was able to see children, patients in need of general dentistry, and oral surgery. He also offered inducements to people to come into his practice. Later on, Dr. Shinn discussed how he was able to find his happiness by providing healthcare, supplies and disease prevention education to remote areas of the world where there is little or no access to it, such as orphanages and refugee camps.
I found this book to be inspirational. I'm in the process of applying to dental school in order to hopefully be able to help community in the future. However, after reading this book my eyes have been opened to possibility of being able to help others who are less fortunate outside of community yet still practice dentistry and not be limited to the local office.
