3 comments about Profiles in Medical History: Volume I.

  1. Mr. Bruss, a california licensed clinical laboratory scientist, has authored a 10 page, 10 chapter paperback book about ten important historical figures and their medical histories. In each chapter, the historical significance of the person is followed by; a discription of the symptoms, historic and current prognostic information, related roles for laboratory testing, and comments about possible future significance of the disorder. The book is an entertaining "easy read". If the reader enjoys history and clinical laboratory science, the $12 price is "good value for the money". An expanded version could be a fine text for a general education college course related to history and medicine.

  2. "What fun! The 'Chicago Hope' of history. For a physician, this is not just good, it's thrilling! Beginning with imperishable truth, leavening with today's knowledge gives an engaging view of the action of disease in history. Encore! J.Joseph Prendergast,M.D. Endocrinologist President of Endocrine Metabolic Medical Center

  3. "An absolutely fascinating account of how the course of history has turned on men's battles with disease. From famous and powerful individuals who fought the scourge of the past and present to mass decimation, it is the careful attention to the personalities involved that makes 'Profiles In Medical History'so rewarding to read."

3 comments about Acknowledged A Man.

  1. After reading this book I was so greatful for the excellent care hospitals now give.I am also thankful for all this family has done.

  2. It is an excellent resource which can help us all to deal with the difficulties of life and use them to create a better world where the wounded are cared for with heart, not just hands.

  3. I read with intererst the story of the Del Buono family as they fought for services for their son/brother. Barbara obviously has tremendous faith courage and strength. Her husband and children, esp. Mary, are also amazing. As the mother of a brain injured son I also am caught in the maze of TBI--and it is not pretty. Barbara has done a good job describing nursing home situations. Even though Nick's nursing home experience was years ago conditions in these homes, at least in Indiana, for TBI survivors has not changed enough. Reading this book has helped give me the strength to continue to fight for services for my TBI son.

1 comments about Facing Cancer With God's Help: A Personal Journey.

  1. This was a great book - small and easy to read! Jeanne Martin shares the fears, anxiety, anger, and emotions she and her family face while she is battling cancer - and she wraps it all in a spiritual package. She truly 'speaks' to cancer warriors, as well as those battling other serious illnesses. You really feel you know the author intimately and marvel at her humor, her ability to trust in God, and to experience peace while going through various treatments. Reading this book is an uplifting experience - everyone who suffers from cancer or has a family member with cancer should read this book. It is a great spiritual resource to keep in a briefcase or purse.

5 comments about Notes on Nursing: What It Is and What It Is Not.

  1. Florence Nightingale greatly influenced modern nursing, to focus on the needs of the patient and establish nursing as a profession requiring assessment skills as well as caring presence. This brief, well-written & clearly understandable book is a must for the personal library of any nurse or nursing student. It is amazing to realize how advanced Nightingale's thinking was in her era; her lessons remain essential today and provide a basis for understanding why we do the things we do. A great read for anyone interested in nursing!

  2. I received the book within a few days of the order and it was in perferct condition.

  3. A book for true Nightingales! I enjoyed this book a great deal, some parts had me laughing out loud. It is an excellent gift book for nurses!

  4. This makes a wonderful gift for a nursing student who is graduating, a nurse who is retiring or one who is being promoted. It is fascinating reading from a historical aspect will be relevant until the end of time.

  5. Nursing is a vocation; not "just a job." Miss Nightingale knew this, and this book reflects this philosophy. Nursing-schools, many years ago, designed the curriculum--and educated the aspiring nurses--with this in mind. Sadly, many present-day nurses (and nursing-schools) have lost this ideal...and the state of affairs in nursing bears this out.

If you're seriously considering nursing--or are a nurse who is "burned out," read this book. It will enlighten and edify you.

1 comments about John Uri Lloyd: The Great American Eclectic.

  1. Michael A. Flannery has written the first full-length biography of John Uri Lloyd (1849-1936), the man generally accepted as one of America's most influential pharmaceutical pioneers. A most intelligent, readable and enlightening work, Flannery takes the reader deep into the philosophy of the eclectics who emerged in response to the then current harsh therapies of physicians. The eclectics worked to replace the horrors of bloodletting & chemical treatments with more reasoned and effective botanical remedies derived from natural sources. Lloyd's story and research center in Cincinnati, Ohio where in 1871 he was hired to develop a line of botanical tinctures, 'Specified Medicines', for the eclectic drug wholesaler H.M.Merrell. Lloyd developed more and refined botanical drugs as well as original research in fluidextracts, formulated means for assaying, and discovered a buffering compound, known later as Lloyd's Reagent. His professional and personal library of rare! and highly valuable pharmaceutical and botanical texts formed the base for an internationally renown library, located in Cincinnati, for scholars and researchers . Prof. Flannery, director of the Lloyd Library, writes touchingly yet objectively of a great man at the center of an important movement in pharmaceutical research and history.
