2 comments about Making the Grade: The Top 25 Most Widely Collected US Coins.

  1. Although its true that some of the coins included in this guide may be popularly collected, I think that their inclusion in this book is a waste of space. Rather than including the State Quarters; Ike, SBA, and Sacagewea dollars; and the Kennedy Halves, which are all too modern to justify inclusion - a better choice would have been the Draped Bust coinage (cents, quarters, halves, dollars), Shield Nickels, and Seated Quarters and Halves. As far as the photos go, they are a hundred times better than those miniature ancient black and white blobs from in the ANA guide. The images of the copper coinages are beautiful, but they could have done a better job which the nickel and silver issues - a bit more contrast and less brightness would have made the details stand out much better. Also, I noticed a few instances where the image of a lower grade coin shows a coin with more detail that the next grade up. A steep cover price, but the best book currently on the market.

  2. A nice reference book for helping novice collectors review and grade coins. I will be taking it with me the next set I start working on. Has lots of photos as examples for what to look for in classifying each grade for a coin, which makes interpreting the words easier.

1 comments about Irish Coins and Medals (Irish Heritage Series).

  1. This is a review of Irish coins by Arthur Went who was primarily a medal collector. It is a good introduction for the curious but does not contain enough detail for collectors.

2 comments about Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of U.S. and colonial proof coins, 1722-1977.

  1. As a professional rare coin dealer, this is one of the books I recommend to new investors as well as investors and collectors who are trying to gain as much insight and information into numismatics "before they invest". In-depth and informative, Breens encyclopedia is a must have for any investor or collector of rare coins.

  2. Indispensable for the serious collector as well as the novice.
The "bible" for United States coins. Walter Breen spent his
life researching and cataloging coins. Tons of photos and die
    variety information. Highly recommended.

1 comments about Standard Catalog of World Coins Spain, Portugal and the New World: Spain, Portugal, and the New World (Standard Catalog of World Coins Spain, Portugal and the New World).

  1. Contrary to what is stated in the editorial review, this catalog does not include Philippine coins during the spanish colonial period. In fairness to the authors it is stated in the foreword that this catalog deals with Ibero-American coinage. Aside from that omission, this book is worth buying in the sense that if all you collect is Spanish/Portugese Colonial Coins you won't have to buy the Other Standard Catalogs that are divided into centuries as this catalog spans the entire timeline.

1 comments about Counterfeit Currency of the Confederate States of America.

  1. As a collector and student of Confederate currency, the availability of information on the contemporary counterfeit versions of the genuine currency was clearly lacking. This book provides a very helpful background and catalog. It fills in many of the blanks on the subject.
