1. Zecca is an impressively researched historical work focusing adeptly on its subject: the Venetian mint in the middle ages. The narrative is very readable and the presentation uses footnotes to annotate the voluminous amount of source material that went into the creation of this work. The book focuses first on the coinage itself, the medieval penny, the grosso, the ducat, and finally the soldino. Each era goes into great detail on the weights, the fineness, and the people making the decisions to have the coins made. The book then goes back and examines each of the roles of the mint employees in additional detail. From the mintmasters and engravers to the smiths and weighers the duties of each position are laid out. In addition salaries and legal documents help flesh out some of the actual persons and the work done at the mint.
   The book left me with a thirst for more knowledge about Venice's history. There is little background in the book on some of the external reasons that caused some of the decisions presented in th work. I think this is definitely a must read for those people who have a strong interest in both history and numismatics. It is not so well suited for the casual reader who will undoubtedly get bored by the finer details of how many pennies are in a mark, and which minor noble filled the role of mintmaster. But if the reader is interested in medieval coinage, even if it is not Italian, than this work will provide a ton of insightful information on mint practices and medieval monetary policy.

Krause publications Standard Catalogue Of World Coins Series, those books share its style and contents with the Encyclopedia of World Gold Coins, the same format and and easy to use information on every minted gold, platinum, and palladium coin. coins, actual size photos are in B&W but is missing complete important sections like whole countries as in Netherlands, and segments as in Australian Sovereigns, 1500's???. You can find missing information within the 4 now 5 volumes of Standard Catalog Of World Coins 1600-2005.
   This volume is easy to use contains a wealth of information and excellent organization seldom found in other books.
   ***** 5 STARS for content and easy of use.
   it has some shortcomings but is an invaluable resource.

2. Probably the only reference book for modern golden coins. Useful to discover what coins have a numismatic value and not only a value related to gold content.



3. A must have book for every student and collector of world gold coins from the 1600's on. I agree that for research prior to the 1600's one needs Friedbergs "Gold Coins of the World" . As a professional coin dealer I recommend both of these books to customers who are interested in learing about and collecting world gold coins.



4. GREAT BOOK, HOWEVER, COMPLETELY FORGOT TO MENTION ANY COINS FROM THE NETHERLANDS, IE: KINGDOM OF THE NETHERLANDS-1815-DATE.

2. This is an excellent guide however not as well organized as R.S. Yeoman's the official Red Book a guide book of United States coins, otherwise the pictures, illustrations and description are superb.
