2 comments about Making the Grade: The Top 25 Most Widely Collected US Coins.
- Although its true that some of the coins included in this guide may be popularly collected, I think that their inclusion in this book is a waste of space. Rather than including the State Quarters; Ike, SBA, and Sacagewea dollars; and the Kennedy Halves, which are all too modern to justify inclusion - a better choice would have been the Draped Bust coinage (cents, quarters, halves, dollars), Shield Nickels, and Seated Quarters and Halves. As far as the photos go, they are a hundred times better than those miniature ancient black and white blobs from in the ANA guide. The images of the copper coinages are beautiful, but they could have done a better job which the nickel and silver issues - a bit more contrast and less brightness would have made the details stand out much better. Also, I noticed a few instances where the image of a lower grade coin shows a coin with more detail that the next grade up. A steep cover price, but the best book currently on the market.
- A nice reference book for helping novice collectors review and grade coins. I will be taking it with me the next set I start working on. Has lots of photos as examples for what to look for in classifying each grade for a coin, which makes interpreting the words easier.

5 comments about Obsolete Paper Money: Issued by Banks in the United States 1782-1866: a Study and Appreciation for the Numismatist and Historian.
- Not what I was looking for. It sounded like there was pricing information in book, but there was none.
- This will be the authority on broken bank notes and obsolete currency for years to come. Mr. Bowers is no doubt one of the very few individuals in the world that could bring all this material together and make an extremely readable and much needed volume available to numismatists and students of economic history.
- if you are looking for a great history reference that shows how paper money fits into the history - this is your book, Mr. Bowers does a great job in researching his history and he shows how the currency and banking fit.
If you are looking for a good paper money reference, you will find this book very frustrating to use. As a paper money reference I thought it to be very disorganized and frustrating for me to use. BUt this book is still a great addition to my library.
Coverage of Northeast states like Maine, was excellent and probably better done here than elsewhere.
What I can't understand is why Mr. Bowers tries to do everything, when there are still books needed in areas where he has the most expertise.
I liked the book.
- Bowers has compiled a substantial body of material that traces the evolution of American currency from the wampum used by native Americans and early settlers to the broken bank notes that effectively disappeared after the Civil war. Even a tome this size is unable to cover that much ground in any real depth, but Bowers makes intelligent decisions about when to go into depth and when to trace the superficial edges. On the whole, this is an invaluable resource for the beginning collector who wants a lot of information in a single place.
- This book is not your typical data book with only pictures and current values for each note (such as Haxby, etc). It is a history book of many notes issued in the United States. It covers the years 1782 - 1866 and is mainly focused on "obsolete notes."
For those who only collect notes as a commodity, this is not the book for you. For those who collect to own a piece of history, this IS a great book for you. Given the large task that the author had, he has done a very nice job. If he were to cover every detail of every note, he would never finish. However, the final work is very nice!
I give it 4.5 stars and not 5 because he did not (and could not) cover all notes and history.

5 comments about The Official Price Guide to Mint Errors, 6th Edition (Official Price Guide to Mint Errors).
- I recieved the book in a timely manner and the book was in better shape than I had expected. Good job. Thank You.
Sandy
- I have never received this item yet even though it was ordered 7/23/07,it is not here yet.
- If you are into error coins big time, this book is for you. The book has hundreds of different errors, saying how they were made and a general price. It is like a encyclepedia: many different general entries, not going to specific on any one type of error. If you are a begginner to numismatics I would not reccommend this. Instead you should go for something like the Redbook. However, if error coins are your expertise, this is a must buy.
- The review below lodges some valid and important complaints. To wit, this book really is not a price guide as such as the 'guidance' is so broad as to be meaningless. Also, it is quite difficult to look up specific varieties such as the one you may be holding in your grimy little paw, and it doesn't give enough up to date information on the populations of various errors. Having said that, it is one of those I believe any nonprofessional coin collector ... coin scout should have for the following reasons: Alan Herbert, the author does give examples of the broad panoply of mint errors that are out there, with description, level of rarity and, usually, a photgraph for visual reference. More importantly, the book includes a complete description of the rating system and all of the nomenclature surrounding the rating and identifying of various errors. This information alone makes this book worthy of purchase. There is other information here too, such as a simple, lucid and photographically enhanced description of the entire minting process that will definitely help you to get your head around the world of error coins. To be sure, this book is deeply flawed and on that basis should probably draw only three stars, but I've looked and there just isn't that much literature on error coins out there for the casual coin collector. So, if you want to fill out your knowledge of error coins but aren't a hardcore error hound, go ahead and get this book. You won't be sorry, I'm sure (possibly a little disappointed though).
- I didn't care for this book for a few reasons. First, this really isn't a price book. Sure it gives very general prices but nothing really pinned down. Second, this book is very hard to just look up a specific coin. The book is not very well aranged. This would be a good book if you just wanted to know the different varieties and how they were made. So if that's what you want then that's what you will get. As far as a price guide forget it doesn't tell me much about the value of a coin, especially with no specific year of coin or denomination.
