  1. Offers a quick way to get a coin value in an easy to read format. IT does not provide instruction on grading coins for the novice, so get an additional book if you want further instruction on that.

5 comments about A Guide Book of United States Coins: 1999 (Guide Book of United States Coins).

  1. ISBN 0307090515 - Tough book to review, so maybe that's why no one has bothered until now. There's no insightful prose, no character development... kind of dry reading. Still, if coins are your thing, this is a handy book.

The negative, of course, is that it's 30 years old and newer books will offer more up-to-date info. The prices, for example, will be different. On the other hand, the basic information hasn't changed, which makes this more likely to be useful to the beginning coin collector who isn't ready to make a large investment in a pricier book.

  2. I've been a coin collector since I was 6 years old (1961). I'm not hard core like my brother, so I don't buy a Red Book every year, but I have a couple of them lying around the house. I still refer to them for mintage numbers and other technical info from time to time.

I've seen other coin guides and price lists, etc. and they all pale in comparison to the "Red Book".

Get this one. It's the best.

    --George Stancliffe

  3. Handy, convenient, and more reliable than the internet. Together with a currency guide, this is all most people would ever need. My latest copy was 13 years old, so I figured it was time to break down and get a new one.

  4. A good guide to see what dealers will SELL you coins for. This is not what you will get if try to sell your coins.

  5. The 58th edition is out, I expected a newer edition than the 54th edition I received.

5 comments about The Official American Numismati Association Grading Standards For United States Coins (Official American Numismatic Association Grading Standards for United States Coins).

  1. I strongly reccommend everyone read 2 or 3 books before spending a dollar on a coin. This book would be 1 of the 3 books I would start with. Excellent info and easy to understand. The detailed descriptions of each of the grades ( no matter which U. S. coins hold your interest) is great. You most know what your spending your money on and this is a truly wonderful source. Good luck and read READ READ.

  2. I collect mostly wheat Penny's, if the book is correct my collection has all went up one grade from what i thought. THANKS

  3. Thanks so much. I reference coin values in this book as I am on-line bidding.

    Jeff

  4. Very well done. The introductory information is key to understanding the rest of the book. Grading is made undertandable.

    Very Good!

  5. If you want the true grade and able to judge the true value of a coin, you need to be able to grade according to ANA standards yourself. There is no better book than this, with clear explanations and pictures. I buy and sell a lot of coins, and I use this book many times a week and recommend it to all.

5 comments about A Guide Book of United States Coins 2003: The Official Red Book (Guide Book of United States Coins).

  1. As I told in an other review regarding the blue book of US coins, I'm very intersted in the coins and their history; the red book is an exploitation in that world.

  2. This book is good for what it includes, but there is a glaring and shocking omission! There is no info on proof sets, only on some individual coins. With the introduction of state quarter sets, annual proof sets have become a hot commodity, yet this book completely overlooks the entire category!

  3. This work has been printed and re-printed for years. It is well
organized. There is a fair concensus of coins represented.
This book is a "must read" for coin buffs and persons
seeking to establish a fair valuation for any collection.
If you own a coin handbook, eventually it will have to be
replaced in order to keep current with the most recent
evaluations. Yeoman distinguishes between grades of coins,
alphabetic abbreviations and the quantity minted.
For instance, in the year 1909 alone, there are at least
4 different coins. i.e. Lincoln Head, VDB, S and SVDB.
Lastly, the author enunciates U.S. Coin Standards in terms
of diameter, thickness, gross weight, grains and thousandths
(fineness measurement). Purchase this book if you have a coin
    collection either large or small.

  4. As another reviewer pointed out, I to was dissapointed by the fact that the latest commerative coins were not included. At first, I thought since these are not very valuable they were excluded. Next, I thought these are the precise coins that new beginners would be looking for when they bought this book. But in conclusion, I think the real problem is timelyness. Each edition is just plain not too timely. That's a shame since time is both knowledge and the advantage one needs to stay on top of the market. This book is not meant to be a history book of the past. I hope the editors get the picture expressed here.

  5. While more pictures are always nice, this book gives me everything I was looking for, its well put together and its certainly a great price. I recently inherited a modest coin collection and this book has answered just about every question I had. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book to anyone who is just getting into the coin collecting hobby.

2 comments about Hawaiian Money - 2nd Edition.

  1. Hawaiian Money is an encyclopedia of information on Hawaiian coins and tokens. It contains information valuable to anyone, begginer to coin dealer. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in tokens, scrip, medals or coins of Hawaii.

  2. Auction houses, advanced and beginner collectors, dealers of coins, tokens and currency, all use this book to guide them in their collecting, pricing, and cataloging of Hawaiian money.

2 comments about The New York Times Guide to Coin Collecting: Do's, Don'ts, Facts, Myths, and a Wealth of History.

  1. ...and found it to be excellent, it is THE definitive coin book INHO. And is most certainly not short on details. As for the two grading services...they are absolute industry standards, of course they are the ones discussed. To tell prospective purchasers to "get the book from the library instead" is...well I found such advice to be unpleasant.

  2. I'm new to coin collecting so I think I'm probably the target audience. Although he covered a lot of ground, I felt it was quite short on detail. For example, he really only examines 2 of the grading services, so I still don't know how all the others compare. I'd borrow it, enjoy the easy to read style, take a few notes, and then spend my money on an other one. Which one, I don't know.
