1 comments about Bella Cosa: Pocket Watches (The Bella Cosa Library).

  1. A beautifully photographed collection of pocket watches, from very old "oignons" to verge fusee and more modern examples. There's probably a metaphor in the contrast between the highly accurate models with plain exteriors, and the ones where the maker put all the expense into the case and dial but stinted on the internal mechanism. This book would probably not be of interest to the serious collector or historian as it is by no means exhaustive.

1 comments about American Shelf and Wall Clocks: A Pictorial History for Collectors (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. Very good photos of some hard to find clocks. Probably could have been arranged in a more logical order, ie. either by dates or start with shelf and work up to wall clocks. Some info not correct but overall good picture book.

4 comments about The Clock Repair Primer: The Beginners Handbook.

  1. This book could be difficult for a beginner. The diagrams are sometimes hard to follow. So, I wouldn't buy this one as your first book on clock repair.

  2. I can't believe the price the two sellers are trying to get for this book; $50 and $99. Outrageous. Do yourself a favor and go to [...]. It's exactly the same book at a cost to you of only $16. Now you understand why I'm amazed at how some people try to take advantage of others. I do buy quite a few books here at Amazon.com and have considered most to be a good deal. [...]

  3. I love this book. I collect old clocks and have purchased many books on clock repair, but I could not use them because they were written for clock experts. After reading this book I think I can do some basic clock maintenance and repair. This book is a must for anyone who has a clock. The format is very easy to follow.

  4. Balcomb does an outstanding job of breaking things down into simple terms. Being a novice, my confidence has been significantly bolstered with his easy to read step by step approach. This is THE book to have when undertaking antique clock repairs!

1 comments about Pocket Watch Handbook.

  1. This book was first printed in England in 1985, so don't expect any information more current than that. It is not a price handbook either. What it does provide is a high quality history of the development of the watch from the Middle Ages with a fair deal of technical explanation. For one unfamiliar with how watches are made, some of the terminology will be difficult. The book also provides some examples of how to research a watch and how to engage in the business of selling watches. Unfortunately, information on starting a watch shop in England in the 1980s is not very useful for most American readers of today, and the research is only moderately interesting. But as an historical introduction to watches it is a top-notch overview, suitable for the technically inclined beginner. The photos are of high quality.

5 comments about Automatic Wristwatches from Switzerland: Self-Winding Wristwatches.

  1. Everthing previously written about the book is correct. What is not: the book does not have a price guide, like one reader said. After all, it's a watch movement's book! How can it have a price guide? The book have very good pictures, but 70% of them are in black and white. I didn't rate this book 5 stars, in fact, because it does not have german to english translations in the schemes of watch movements and pictures that have something written in german. Finally, the book is a little bit disorganized, since it does not have an index or different type fonts to "tell" you that you are in another chapter.

    Added:

After reading the book, i found the price lists. It's one book's page...

  2. This book provides a complete listing of movement caliber & historical information in a very straightforward fashion. It also includes close up photos of some 200 individual watches and also includes a helpful, though outdated, pricing guide. It is an indispensible reference book bound in top-quality heavy duty binding. I found it to be worth every penny I paid.

  3. Well researched, technical details to a useful degree for collectors, list of calibers, good photos.
One of my favourites, be it for research on specific models or to just flick through from time to time.

  4. This is a great book for you Rolex and Omega lovers (as well as other fine Swiss watches). It covers only Swiss wristwatches but it does a nice job of it. Lots of black and white (as well as some color) close ups of faces and movements. There is a table to tell the approximate range of years when specific caliber movements were produced. I'm certainly not an expert but I would recommend this book for those who are getting into the hobby of collecting fine Swiss automatic movement (self-winding) watches.

P.S. Look elsewhere for information on modern quartz or early manual winding watches. If you like bumper and/or full rotor automatic winding wristwatches then this book is for you.

  5. A great book, with almost all the automatic movement ever made. With detailed technical info and great pictures, this book is certainly worth it.

2 comments about Russian Wristwatches: Pocket Watches, Stop Watches, Deck Watches & Marine Chronometers (A Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. Between 1990 and present, there has been a tremendous surge in collecting Russian and Sovjet timepieces, especially in Europe. Still, complete and comprehensive documentation is elusive. So far, two authors have attempted to categorize and document the subject in books.

The book by mr. Levenberg covers mostly the era from 1970 through present. Thereby, the highly interesting timeframe between the 30's and the 70's is overlooked, limiting the usefulness of the book to collectors of fairly recent pieces. If this is your area of interest, I would recommend you to purchase this book. First it is translated from German to English. Furthermore, the quality of the information is of acceptable level, but sometimes lacking interesting details. The horological information (mostly brands and calibers) covers the timeframe nicely. Additional information, e.g. Cyrillic translations are interesting extras for collectors. I have found the price guide to be unrealistically high when used at auctions or watch fairs, so use it with caution.

If you are interested in a broader view on Russian and Sovjet Era (pre 1991) watches, I would recommend to also consider the 2 books in German language by mr. Ceyp. These hardcover, full color books document a wider scope. Volume 1 'Faszination Russische Uhren' covers about the same era as the book by mr. Levenberg but shows more detail, while volume 2 'Faszination Sovjetische Uhren' covers the less recent history in abundance. I would rate these books with 4*. Still, I have not found the the ultimate, definitive book on the subject Russian and Sovjet timepieces.

  2. A wonderful book showing the wide range of timepieces that the Russians produce, and which are now becoming available on the open market. Profusely illustrated and well documented. Includes a short, but very complete, table of cyrillic to english for the various markings one comes across. The only downside - buy two copies. The binding on mine fell apart from so much use. TAF
