5 comments about Wristwatches: A Connoisseur's Guide.

  1. Hello. The LIBRARY JOURNAL review you have for WRISTWATCHES: A CONNOISSEUR'S GUIDE is botched. You're including review information for some book on jewelry. Please do something about this, pronto. Thanks!
    Ken Goldberg

  2. This is a good overview of watch history and availability. Highlighted are 55 of the major collectible watch companies with good photo selections from each. The detailed pages on the companies is good and informative. Not bad for the coffee table, either.

  3. This is an OK gift book with nice photos of watches, but it fails as a "connoisseurs" guide. There is scant history of the various brands and almost no technical information. No connoisseur would seriously consider a Timex watch, but Timex is presented along with the finest Breitlings, Bulgaris, Breguets et al. In the section on Bulgari, the author describes in detail a watch given by Count Galazzo (sic) Ciano to a friend, but there is no illustration to go along with the description.

A watch collector or connoisseur should not waste his or her time with this lightweight giftbook

  4. Nothing much to learn from this well illustrated book, at least nothing more than what can be found in "wriswatch annual". For newbies only.

  5. Accurate and concise history of time keeping, with a brief history of the technical evolution as well as a generical presentation of the main 50 makers and their actual products. Good photos.

1 comments about Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World: Complete 21st Century Edition.

  1. Nothing is better than finding the clockmaker or watchmaker name you're looking for, and this book is the best way to do it. It's more of a surprise when you don't find the name you need. Saw this reviewed in the NAWCC Bulletin; membership in this organization is vital, too!

1 comments about Making a Clock-Accurate Sundial Customized to Your Location (for the Northern Hemisphere).

  1. This book describes making a simple horizontal sun-dial with
a angled gnomon (the shadow casting thingy). For
"clock-accuracy" you have to look up an error offset in
a chart. The "equation of time" is not built into the
    the design.
The book intentionally skips over the mathematics involved.
I found more information by searching the internet for
"analemmic sundial" than I found in this book.

2 comments about My Own Right Time: An Exploration of Clockwork Design.

  1. Philip Woodward takes the reader through both his thinking process and his mechanical trials to design and build the perfect clock.

A must read for every horologist. Writen lije a novel, but containing the information of a first r5ate textbook on horological science.

  2. This is the story of a quest to build a perfect clock (he does come pretty close). It offers a rare glimpse into the private process of creative design.

1 comments about Tiffany Timepieces.

  1. A wonderful history of the Company and the time peices they sold. Beautifully illustrated with archival photos not seen elsewhere, this significant book gives a real 'feel' for the quality and enviability of Tiffany, especially in the early years. Unfortunately, too little time is spent on the really early, priceless pieces, with the emphasis on the more 'modern' (post Depression era) pieces....not surprising, since the author was the director of design for so many of these later peices, that the book often feels a little too self congratulatory. Still, for the owner/collector/admirer of the early T&Co. pieces, this book is a must.
