1 comments about 3x An Abstraction: New Methods of Drawing by Hilma af Klint, Emma Kunz, and Agnes Martin.

  1. With a few notable exceptions including M.C. Escher, Dali, and a few others, I'd never really thought of drawing or painting in terms of being a means to an end other than self expression. Af Klint, Kunz, and Martin came from three different parts of the world and from three different generations. Each of them had a slightly different approach to drawing. What they had in common was that they used drawing as a means to explore the inner universe of consciousness and perception. In that regard, they were way, way, way, ahead of their time.

It might be a stretch to call Carl Jung an artist, but he did the same thing through the exploration of dreams. Likewise, Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert, and their cohorts aren't usually considered artists, yet they too explored consciousness and the nature of existence (albeit by different means)along the same lines as the three women represented here.

This is a fantastic book for anyone interested in drawing.

There's an extra reward for those who also happen to be interested in the exploration of the mind, perception, and ultimately, a quest for spirituality.

3 comments about How to Shoot Great Travel Photos.

  1. I discovered Susan McCartney in a New York Times review of her first travel book, the review was positive in the extreme. I thought as a New York professional photographer for over twenty years I knew it all, that book proved me wrong! I had years of formal training, yet her book had all the 'nuts & bolts' of the craft that I didn't know. I also learned how to travel & shoot in a efficient and profitable way. Over the years I purchased everything McCartney wrote including 'How to Shoot Great Travel Photos' this new work continues the wonderful writing style and most important her years of hands on experience doing travel photography. Unlike the 'fluff' found in many "photography" books, McCartney is the real deal, I urge you to get your hands on all of her books!

  2. This book is an absolute waste of money. I bought this because I enjoyed her other book "Travel Photography" which is quite good but this book is probably the worst I have bought.

The information is out of date and wrong in quite a few sections. Worst of all the photography is probably the worst I have seen and is printed very poorly. Based on this I dont know how she got where she is. Money spent better elsewhere.

  3. Well Susan McCartney has done it yet again. For those of us in the travel photography business, and for anybody aspiring to enter, Travel Photography: A Complete Guide to How to Shoot and Sell is the bible. But one thing I always wished it had more of was photographs. Lots of big colour ones. How to shoot great travel photos not only solves that problem but it also goes beyond to cover anything and everything you could ever want to know about how to travel and photograph the world.
A quick glance over the index will show you that this is a very in-depth book. Want to know how to go about charging your equipment overseas? Covered. Want to know what lenses to take? Covered. Should you shoot film or digital? Read on to find out.
But reading the index only tells half the story. It's the way that Susan McCartney presents the information that makes this book shine. Clearly, concisely and in such an interesting way that if you're not inspired to be both a better photographer and traveller after reading this book then I'm afraid there's no hope for you!
One problem I find a lot of travel photography books have is that they talk about the techniques in a general sense and you come away thinking that it's more a book about just photography and not so much about travel. One read of any of Ms McCartney's book and you'll realise that the travel is an integral part of whatever she does. She loves the people and places she visits as much as the photography and that is a very important fact.
If you can't imagine travel without photography, or photography without travel then I highly recommend this book.

1 comments about Clocks of New York: An Illustrated History.

  1. Time is always on everyone's minds, but do we stop and take a minute to look at the history of telling time? This book tells the history of telling time in such an interesting and compelling way. Very detailed in history & facts, this book draws the reader in to think about why we became so time oriented in past times right up to the present time. Beautifully photographed, this book would satisfy anyone interested in history, clocks, time, photographs, or a New York City connoisseur!

  1. 215 pages of detailed illustrations with information on the type of clock, pattern name, when manufactured, dial size and price. Even if you're not a collector or seller this book is interesting to look at with all the different styles of clocks. Would make a wonderful coffee table book.

2 comments about Collecting & Repairing Watches.

  1. The focus is on antique European pocket watches, especially British ones, this being a British publication. The technical history of watches is thoroughly covered, the various outdated watch mechanisms--verge, fusee, cylinder escapement--are explained, and interesting footnotes are included, like the wage records from a 19th century watch shop. A chapter on repair will get you started, and even tell you how to restore the blueing on the watch hands (heat them in a tray over an alcohol lamp). The author has spent much of his life studying and collecting old watches, and has produced an easy-to-read guide filled with interesting and useful information.

  2. If you are a "newbie" in the world of watch collecting, this is the right book for you. It focuses the watch evolution from the late 16TH century to the modern quartz watch. It has a lot of graphics and black and white pocket watch pictures...The book, however, is, in my point of view, intended for a quick knowledge of the watch's history and mechanics...It doesn't cover, for instance, the modern automatic wristwatch. I think that's the best book to read before trying something more techicall. The reading is very straight forward, but the experts in the field will find the book very summarized.

2 comments about Patek Philippe: Complicated Wrist Watches.

  1. It is not only an informative source about the rarest and most sought-after wrist watches by Patek Philippe, it is also lavishly illustrated with amazing color photos that almost stick out of the book. To be able to glimpse at a similar quality of wrist watches you would have to find a specialized museum or fly to Switzerland to the Patek philippe factory.
Makes you envious of this private collector who had the vision and the foresight, as well as the money, to start collecting these marvelous and almost unique masterpieces.

  2. Complication is the upmost level in watchmaking and Patek Philipe is the upmost swiss watchmaker. These two things meet in this beautiful album. The history of Patek Philipe complicated watches from 20s up to 80s represented by gorgeous photos. Every watch is represented by dial, movement and case back pictures. The book may serve both as a nice reading and as a collector's book. Excellent print. The only minus is the lack of detailed movements information (ref. number provided for every watch).
