1 comments about Collector's Dictionary of Clocks and Watches.
- This book is not bad on amount of entries but lacks any sort of depth, most definitions and descriptions are short and barely informative. It seems that this author decided not to do any substantial research or make the effort required, has a cut and paste feel.

2 comments about Swatch: A Guide for Connoisseurs and Collectors.
- Somewhat disappointed, not a guide for the collector. Covers very little in terms of particular Swatches. Only lists a handful of Swatches from each category, not the exhaustive list the tittle leads you to believe. On the other hand, if you are obsessed with the most interesting watch ever produced, then you should have this book. Just don't expect to use it for looking up unknown Swatches. If anyone knows of a good book that lists all Swatches made please let me know mark.duncan@mindspring.com .
- I enjoyed this book. It's pictures were very nice and of course colorful. Had a good introduction to the history of Swatch watches and also informitive for the beginner collector. Nice book overall.

2 comments about Field Guide to Flint Arrowheads & Knives of the North American Indian: Identification & Values.
- The book contains excellent, black and white actual-size photographs of points and blades from the Eastern United States. The photos are labeled with the point name, approximate archeological period, typical states in which found, and approximate value to collectors.
There are only four pages of general information text. There are no descriptions of material types associated with the photos. For someone interested in information on point methodology, material types, or significant historical information, the book will be a major disappointment. Additionally, though the title is "Flint Arrowheads & Knives of the North American Indian" I could find only three pages containing point types found in the Northern Western United States. For Eastern US collectors, the photos may be of some interest, but for a novice artifact hunter out West, information in the book is virtually non-existent.
- Compared to other books in this field, this one is lacking for the avid collecter. It is a very good book for the beginner because it covers the most common types of points pretty well. The pictures and discriptions are as good as most in this field.

- This is a great book on the evolution of time measuring machines. But its real value is in the large amount of bibliographic references.

1 comments about The French Marble Clock: A Guide for Buyers, Collectors and Restorers with Hints on Dating and a List of Makers.
- How many times have you seen one of those big old French marble clocks for sale at auction or in a shop? Were you intrigued by the craftsmanship, curious about the history, or just impressed by the size? Wonder no more, now that Nicolas Thorpe has written this useful guide to these relics of a past age.
These clocks were made during the 1830 to 1930 period, and they fall into my definition of an investment antique. They were expensive when new, still useful, and won't be made again. Yet they seem undervalued in the market. Thorpe discusses the aesthetic, historical, and practical aspects of these behemoths. Much of the book is a simple, practical course in cleaning and restoring these cases and movements. It is directed at the LAYMAN, not the expert. If you have never repaired a clock, if you are reasonably handy you can follow Thorpe's directions and do it right. Even if you only own one French marble clock, you should have this book. Whether it's a petite boudoir timepiece or a fireplace mantel juggernaut, your understanding and enjoyment will be enhanced by this book.

3 comments about Wristwatches: History Of A Century's Development.
- ....A thorough explanation of both the history of the wrist watch as well its mechanical evolution. Direct, easy, approachable, yet thorough, with a significant number of illustrations and photos of every description of watch from all the major European manufacturers from the early years thru modern times. If you collect wrist watches, this book is the Gold Standard.
- Now in a newly revised fifth edition, Wristwatches: History Of A Century's Development by Helmut Kahlert, Richard Muhe and Gisbert L. Brunner, is an extraordinary, high-quality, in-depth guide meant especially for collectors but also filled with fascinating information for lay readers curious about the technological, sociological, and economic factors that have not only contributed to the development of the wristwatch, but made the portable clock an important part of world history. Over 1990 black-and-white and color photographs abound throughout this lavish compendium, which includes extensively detailed essays on the origin of the wristwatch, its distinctive features versus the pocket watch, its basic construction and function, self-winding watches, special types of wristwatches, preservation and care of wristwatches, and much more. Express focus is given to various name brands and types of wristwatches throughout the past century, with many photos, capsule descriptions, and sample prices for classic watches. Wristwatches: History Of A Century's Development is truly an outstanding reference for hobbyists and historians alike.
- Wristwatches' is an excellent survey of the huge variety of watches that been developed this century. Highlights includes a consise history of the changes in design over the last 100 years and brief insights into how particular complications are constructed. However, for the english reader, for this is a translation from the original German editions, it has a few faults in it's germanocentricity. All of the historical advertising material displayed in the book is in German. It would have been more appropriate to include at least a few english language advertisments as it gives a lot of flavour to such a book. In addition there is a complete section on German wristwatch development which is a bit dry if this is not your particular interest. A major editorial fault is that the vast majority of photos have lost their numbering and you are left trying to match up the descriptions to each picture. For such a book this fault is a pity. However it is still one of the best guides for vintage and modern watch enthusiasts as it covers a vast range of models with a very useful, and fairly accurate, price guide.

2 comments about Piaget Watches and Wonders Since 1874.
- This is the most comprehensive and the most complete source of information published so far about this worldfamous manufacturer of top class watches. Close to 100 per cent of its contents are due to the former international sales director of the company, Emil Keller, who had worked side by side with Gerald and Valentin Piaget, the owners, as from 1957.
- This is an excellent book detailing the Piaget Company. Anyone who appreciates fine craftmanship in watches would enjoy this volume. The photographs are wonderful and beautiful printing is throughout. As a watch collector, I would hope that the other "top houses" of watchmaking would permit such a work to be published. If nothing else, it is one good ad piece for prospective Piaget customers.
