1 comments about Always Bright: Paintings by American Chinese Artists 1970-1999.

  1. Always Bright: Paintings By American Chinese Artists 1970-1999 showcases the work of eighty acclaimed American Chinese arts and places their art into three categories: oil painting, Chinese painting, and other media painting. Always Bright also profiles the artists and furnishes information on their professional accomplishment. Always Bright fills a gap in contemporary art history and will eminently satisfy art students and connoisseurs seeking to known and attain a sound appreciation of American Chinese artists and their accomplishments. These representative artists come from a variety of backgrounds, use different media, belong to different schools. but share an innate Chinese temperament, life experience, original thinking, and unique expressions. All of the paintings combine to reflect a facet of splendid Chinese culture that has been transplanted from the old world to the new -- to the enriched enhancement of both.

2 comments about A Life of Science: Wisdom from Conversations with 11 Distinguished Chinese American Scientists.

  1. James Watson once said his book, The Double Helix, was intended to instruct students what a career in science is like. This book, A Life of Science, fulfills the same ambitions in a thorough and very interesting way. This book contains "sage wisdom", as one of the reviewers on the back of the book states - it's like having an experienced scientist-advisor on your shoulder.

Oh, by the way, this book is very easy to read. The writing was taken from actual conversations from the scientists, so the language is simple and straightforward - no funky syntax like in Arrowsmith.

There's a Chinese proverb that I read somewhere and find pretty appropriate. It goes "To know the road ahead, ask those coming back." A lot of scientists "coming back" - eleven of them, to be exact, respond to many insightful questions and give great advice. If you're at all interested in science, you should read this book. Stick with this book and it may very well change your life.

  2. I enjoy reading general science books by authors like Matt Ridley, who wrote Genome: The Autobiography of a Species or Bryan Sykes, who wrote Adam's Curse. While searching Amazon to continue my recent glut of such gems, I came across A Life of Science.

I was instantly intrigued by the driving force behind the book. The authors delve into the lives of 11 prominent Chinese-Americans scientists (most of whom are based in the U.S.) while listing out the things that make them tick, as this book is tailored for students who are interested in getting into a science-related career.

This book is an enormously interesting and informative read and "profiles" each scientist by writing a detailed biography before each conversation, which is presented in a Q&A format.

The real soul of this book lies in the 'What We Can Learn' sections at the end of each profile, which lists out the principles/characteristics that influenced the scientists to succeed.

1 comments about Between East And West: My Life with Olivia, Volume One In and Out of China.

  1. A fascinating account of life in China during the turbulent years at the beginning of the Communist regime. Themes of love, honor, and hardship make the story universal, while the specific struggles for survival make it uniquely personal. I didn't want to put the book down.

1 comments about Ninth Heaven to Ninth Hell: The History of a Noble Chinese Experiment.

  1. The manuscript of this book had to be smuggled out of China, where the reactionary government suppressed its publication. Today's Chinese "Communist" Party viciously slanders the achievements of collective agriculture in the community Dazhai and the visionary leader Chen Yonggui who helped to make it a success. Yet thousands of people, both Chinese and foreign, saw for themselves the development of this once backward village into a thriving, highly productive agricultural community. It prospered until the early 1980s, when it was forcibly disbanded by the central government. The effects of decollectivisation were dramatic and criminal: in 1987, Dazhai, formerly a prosperous collective, was not able to feed itself.

Qin Huailu is to be applauded for having the courage to record this important period of history in the face of oppression by the current counterrevolutionary régime. The accomplishments of Chen Yonggui and Dazhai will not be forgotten.
