4 comments about Bad Cat Wall Calendar 2008.

  1. I ordered this product as a Christmas gift in mid-December and it thankfully arrived before the end of January, allowing the recipient to enjoy January's hilarious pictures. It would have been nice to have it under the tree in time, though!

  2. 2007 was very funny, 2008 is not at all. Not sure If you changed writers, more importantly though...why did you leave off Easter this year? I won't be buying this calendar again.

  3. Hysterically funny. A little edgy so it may not be appropriate for young kids. We hung ours out of sight. Ours came with a set of post cards, my fave was the one about Camus.

  4. This calender is absolutely hiliarious. Purrrrfect gift for any cat lover. And yourself, too!

2 comments about The Very Healthy Cat Book: A Vitamin and Mineral Program for Optimal Feline Cat.

  1. Dr. Belfield's book has been great in helping me understand the importance of vitamin C as well as a variety of other nutrients and antioxidants to help keep my cats healthy and strong. After reading his book, I ordered his Mega-C food supplement through a cat breeder friend of mine who is also using his wonderful products. His Mega-C has been useful in helping my cats recover rapidly from minor colds and sneezing.

  2. This book was very influential in my formulating a diet for my Maine Coon cats. Dr. Belfield has adopted Dr. Pauling's ideas about orthomolecular medicine. The book is available directly from Dr. Belfield, www.belfield.com.

3 comments about Medieval Cats.

  1. The more you know of medieval illuminations, the funnier this book is. What Ms. Herbert has done here is to redraw The Tres Riches Heures of Jean, Duke of Berry, replacing the people with cats.

Ms. Herbert's many books revisit the styles of famous artists; this is my personal favorite, and I think it's criminal that it's out of print.

  2. Cute book for a little girl who loves both cats and period costumes (boys might like it too, but most won't admit to the period costume part). If you are looking for something that shows how cats were actually portrayed in medieval times, keep going. This is a strictly modern variation which replaces the figures in medieval-type illuminated "manuscripts" with cuddly cats. The operative word, once again, is cute.

  3. I don't love cats, in fact, I'm really allergic to them. But I have this book, and it is a good picture book. It has pictures that may have been farmiliar in the medieval times, with cats as the characters. It's not just for kids either, just if you like cats. Each page has a description of the picture. It's not a real cutesie cat book, but it's fun.

5 comments about Emergency Procedures for the Small Animal Veterinarian.

  1. Purchased recently to help my work in an Emergency clinic. The book is an excellent collection of conditions commonly encountered in a busy ER clinic set up.Very comprehensive, informative.
Each condition is described very professionally from description of the condition-diagnosis-prognosis-treatment including the description for many procedures used in the treatment.Doses of medications is very informative.

Repetitions are to be avoided; example-the procedure for "gastric lavage" is repeatedly described in detail under all conditions that possibly require a gastric lavage.Instead of this the general procedure for gastric lavage could have been described at one place and reference to that page can be given on all conditions requiring a gastric lavage. This can save a lot of pages of print.

A few demonstrations of how to calculate a CRI would be very helpful.
Inclusion of color pictures illustrations can save a lot of space in describing the procedures.

Inclusion of common toxins and antidote is helpful.

  2. This is a great book for reference for my classes, and would be really helpful in an emergency clinics.

  3. I have worn out the first edition, which is just under 300 pages. This book is about twice the size but has more than 2X the info because the type is smaller. This is the book I often use daily to get me through poisonings, trauma and more. Each problem has the treatment completely listed, you do NOT have to page back and forth to find drugs, procedures, etc. Buy it, I'm glad I did!

  4. Great book for an emergency practice or just to review the occasional emergency problem. Definitely worth buying. Also, worth updating from the first edition.

  5. I have purchased several reference texts on emergency medicine over the years - this is by far the best - well organized and (quickly)readable.

1 comments about Selections From Newton's Principia (Science Classics Modules for Humanities Studies).

  1. These selections from the Principia may be divided into three groups: the text-only sections (definitions, rules of philosophising, general scholium), sampling of non-mathematical theory (evidence that planets move around the sun), sampling of the mathematical theory (beginnings of the inverse square law, the "moon test"). The last of these is the most substantial and interesting. First we look at Newton's wonderful proof of Kepler's law of equal areas (book 1, prop. 1), which follows very easily from the idea of dividing the orbit into infinitesimally thin triangles. Next we use this same idea to prove that if a planet moves uniformly in a circle then the centripetal force is proportional to the arc squared over radii (book 1, prop. 4). We will prove it in the case of infinitely small time intervals; the general case follows easily. Suppose the planet moves from A to B along a circle with center S in an infinitely small interval of time. Draw the diagonal through A and call the opposite point D. Draw the perpendicular to ASD through B, cutting ASD in C. If there were no gravity the planet would have moved along the tangent to the circle to some point E instead of to B (BE is parallel to ASD because the time interval is infinitely small). Now ABC is similar to ABD so AC/AB=AB/AD, i.e. BE=AC=AB^2/AD=arc^2/diameter. Since BE measures acceleration (change in velocity vector), the theorem follows. Substituting Kepler's harmonic law (radii squared are proportional to orbital periods cubed) into this proposition shows that the forces are inversely proportional to radii squared (corollary 6). But wait, there's more. Corollary 9 will be crucial for the "moon test". It compares the motion along the arc with the corresponding free fall motion: (diameter)/(arc)=(arc)/(distance fallen). The relation AC/AB=AB/AD from the above proof says precisely this in the case of infinitesimal time, because C is the free fall position corresponding to B (C is the end point when the same acceleration BE works on the planet at rest). Thus we have (diameter)/(small arc)=(small arc)/(small fall), and for a non-infinitesimal time we still have arc^2 proportional to time, which gives (big fall)/(small fall)=(big arc)^2/(small arc)^2. Multiplying these two identities and rearranging proves the corollary. Now for the moon test (book III, proposition 4). We just proved that (diameter)/(arc)=(arc)/(distance fallen). We know the diameter of the moon's orbit and the arc it covers in, say, one minute. Therefore we know the distance it would fall in one minute "if the moon be supposed to be deprived of all motion and dropped, so as to descend towards the earth". But above we saw that gravity is inversely proportional to the inverse square of distance, and the moon is 60 earth radii away, so now we know the distance the moon would fall if it was dropped close the surface of the earth (60^2 times greater). Of course we already know how far regular objects fall in one minute under the influence of regular gravity (determining this means determining g, which is best done using pendulums; Newton refers to Huygens). These two distances come out almost exactly the same, "and consequently, that force by which the moon is held back in its orbit, will be that very force which we usually call 'gravity.'"

2 comments about Honorable Cat.

  1. This book is packed with beautiful kitty photographs and poetry. It is configured with a photo on one page and a poem (based on the photo)on the opposite page. The beginning of the book takes a unique look at the cat from a respectful and appreciative perspective. The authors writing style tends to be "old english" (compared to what I'm used to) But it quickly grows on you. I've read and re-read the book many times...In fact, I find the words drifting into my mind when riding the bus or trolley..It's truly a special book for the cat lover. A+++

  2. Honorable Cat is my "most favorite" cat book. The poetry is unique, the photographs are terrific... this book is so SPECIAL it's hard to sum up in a few words. I try to keep one on hand at all times to use as a special gift. It makes a wonderful coffee table book. My favorite poems include "The Dandelion" and an absolutely priceless ballad about "Tough Tom, the King of the Car Park." I tell you the truth, you can't buy this book fast enough.

1 comments about The Mammoth Book of Cats (Mammoth Books).

  1. I initially purchased this item just because I needed am affordable book to add to my order for my free shipping, but I certainly was not disappointed. The book contains a massive amount of cat stories from a large variety of authors. Once nice feature of the book is that similar stories are grouped together by categories such as kitten stories, etc. The book is small enough to travel easily, and the stories are short enough so you can easily read one or two before bedtime. This has to be one of the best collections of cat stories out there.
