- Cute but could have used a bit more real cat stuff. She seemed to scratch the surface but I wonder if she has cats. Still if you love cats or your significant other does, its worth a read.

1 comments about The Complete Persian (Book of the Breed S).
- Synopsis:
A reference to keeping Persian cats which offers advice for the breeder, exhibitor and pet owner on caring for these pedigree animals and includes a history of the breed.
In this book, two world-class experts, one British and one American, draw on their combined experience as breeders and judges of Persians to provide the most comprehensive study of Persians so far published. Thompson and Wickham-Ruffle look at the origins and evolution of the breed, give invaluable advice on choosing a Persian, and discuss how to groom and care for it.
There are chapters on breeding and judging as well, with an in-depth analysis of the Breed Standard. Illustrations, which feature a stunning color section, include a gallery of outstanding examples of Persians from the early days of the Fancy to the present day. Written for the breeder, judge and owner, this is the book that all Persian enthusiasts have been waiting for.

5 comments about Tonkinese Cats.
- Love the book.
I just got my own two little Tonks and I also own the other guide by Lorraine Shelton (ISBN 0793821924). Both together are a great help as my kittens are my first cats!
Vousden's book does go into great detail about genetics and selective breeding and what it means to breed true to standard. However, there is also tonnes of information for the novice Tonk cat owner, on all areas of healthcare, grooming, feeding and especially what to look out for or beware of when choosing a Tonk kitten.
If you are actually interested in the breed, this is a great book as not only does it cover the basics in detail, it covers the origins, possible drawbacks of the breed, personality characteristics and shows you examples of how to read your Tonk's papers and pedigree. It also tells you where the cats in the great photos in the book come from, which means you can actually contact the cattery yourself if you like what you see, as these catteries are well established. The appendixes at the back of the book are amazingly detailed and one can tell lots of research work has been invested and into compiling this book together.
It tells you not only the associations in Britain but also that in America and Europe and what characteristics are accepted or not accepted. The appendix also gives you up to date details on how to contact them and possible legal inquiries one might have when moving with the animals from one continent to another ( I moved with my cats from America to Canada and then to Germany)
Vousden has written a book for almost anyone interested in the breed, prospective Tonk owners, and also any novice who may one day consider breeding or attending cat shows as spectator or shower.
It does however take time to pore through the book or to do selective reading so you might want to (especially if you are novice) get a good book on good cat ownership that you could quickly flip through and perhaps also pick up Shelton's Tonk cat guide.
Overall, I think Vousden's book is a great reference for anyone interested in the breed as either pet, show or breeding quality;Tonk owner, propective Tonk owner, breeder or prospective breeder, to have at home!
- I bought the book via Amazon.com because here in Belgium there are no specific books for this breed.
Because i'm a beginning breeder i find it very important to have the amount of knowledge necaissary before i start with a first litter... This book is a very good guide for me (character, genetics, ...)
- I recently purchased this book from Amazon as books on Tonkinese cats are not available in Australia. I was not disappointed. I have two Tonks with a litter due in a few weeks. This will be my only litter and I do not have the time to show, however I found that the book gave useful info. on these topics as well as plenty of useful info. for 'pet' owners. Tonks have only just begun to be accepted as a registered breed in Australia and I would have to say that they are a wonderful breed clearly outlined in Linda's book. Well done!
- Tonkinese Cats by Linda Voudsen is a good reference for Tonk lovers. My only regret is that it was written for English Tonkinese cats and not the ones accepted by the CFA here in the USA. If you are a Brittish Cat Fancier, you will find lots of pictures, descriptions of good tonks, a good treatise on the genetics and coat patterns..., health issues with special attention to problems associated with tonks. Also, there is a good section on what their cat shows look for. I wish they had a book this good for the United States since the recognized coat patterns and some of the criteria are different here.
- My wife & I have a new Tonkinese kitten - and I searched for the word Tonkinese and found this book. After I got it, I was disappointed with it. While I agree with one of the other reviews here about the author being enthusiastic, I felt way overwhelmed.
It felt to me that this book was written more for a breeder than a "regular cat owner". It also felt like a "reference" book, more than a book you can just pick up and read. It was well put together, but for me, I felt it was way more than I needed. Also, for the size of the book, $31 is a bit steep (which was the price when I wrote this). Shouldn't have been more than $13 or $14, I felt.

- This is a Great Book with Great Pictures. It is easy to read and understand. However.. Beware..The other book that Amazon offers, Exotic Shorthair Cat (Popular Cat Library) by Karen Cummings [Library Binding]is the same as this one, the cover is just different. This book is paperback and the other is hardback and the 2 covers have different pictures. I know because I ordered both thinking I was getting 2 different books. Don't make the same mistake I did. It's just a personal preference, paperback or hardback??
- This is a great book for cat fans, but especially for those who own or enjoy Exotic Shorthairs. The photos are fantastic and are incredibly glossy and colorful. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the printing and the stock that this book is printed on- it made my a great Christmas present for my wife. The reading was entertaining and factual, but the real selling point for this book is the photos.

5 comments about ABC Cat.
- This was originally a gift to me, and have since given it twice to cat lovers who have raved. The photography is unusually stunning black and white, with very whimsical uses of the cat/alphabet juxtaposition. The suede cover with the cut-out is nicely designed, and helps it stand out among other gift books. There's also a wonderful description of the author and how the book came about - which just adds to the personalization of what could easily have been a "typical" cat photo gift book.
- Lorenz Kienzle, though living in Berlin, germany, was presented by galleries in united kingdom, italy, france and so on - and he is proud to be presented by the US-publishers Stewart, Tabori & Chang in New York, Manhattan, 115 West 18th Street: and they have done their work very well: The cover of this little precious book is made of black velvet, so cats really will start to love this book too, taking place on the cover for a dream-time. CAT-ABC: the letter "S" for example shows "STRETCH" - the authors tomcat named "KATER" is doing his very best to reach the level of aerobic heroes like Jane Fonda. Letter "R": ROUND - a sleeping-body-hieroglyph showing a circle-form (making a mimikry-correspondance to a coffee-pot); letter "L" - LENGTH: extreme-show: cat KATER is demonstrating, that he is able to make himself as long as a hare - in order to cover the length of his favorite sofa, so that no one else can take a seat. Letter "E": EDGE: cats talent, to let the chin hang over the edge while resting on tables, chairs, cupboards, refrigerators or bookshelfs. Letter "Q" . QUADRUPED: showing footprints in the snow. Letter "C" - CUDDLE: evidence, that human and animal beings are able to make a sculpture of togetherness while sleeping in the same bed. Letter "H" - HIDE AND SEEK - I think this is a manner of playing we can find in the whole world - not only between (human) childs and their parents, between cats and dogs, birds and horses - it's a gift to see the same thing taking place between animals and the extraordinary beings, that climbed some levels higher on the evolution-ledder - HIDE and SEEK - it's a way, to remember the roots of all living. Letter "J" - JUMP - shifting the reader of the book in astonishment and leading him to the opinion, that some cats are jumping more risky than parachutists. Very often books about cats are awful kitch, indeed, portraying animals dressed as humans, posing for bad jokes, they can't identify. But this ABC of cats seems to be composed in memory of the grandfather of animal behavior-science Konrad Lorenz: The photographer Lorenz Kienzle now created a well done picture-collection of animal-observation. If cats could write a customer-review, they would scratch on the paper: "Yeah, that's it!"

- What a pleasure to look at good photography and domestic animals, in this case, a cat. Pet books haven't had the best of luck, good ones, are hard to find. Araki has a fantastic book about cats in Tokyo, and extraordinary Magnum photographer Elliot Erwitt had photographed dogs since forever, with wit and skill. Apart from these, pet books tend to be kitsch, senseless, collections of awful photographs, with no sense of reality and story telling. Portraying animals dressed as humans, grotesque and sad. ABC Cat, is elegant, skillful and at moments witty, contemplative and revealing. I hope this is the first of a new beginning of pet books, where the subject matter is not overriding the medium. Congratulations on this book. It is rare joy; everybody who loves photography and animals (or Cats) should have one copy.
- Another customer reviewer called this book "elegant, beautiful, and intimate." And it is. It's also gentle and oddly moving. The photographer's affection for Kater is apparent in every frame. Physically, Kater is a garden-variety kitty, but by the mid-point of the alphabet, the viewer sees him as his family does, and he is beautiful. This isn't an ordinary, vapid cat book. I think it's essentially about love.

3 comments about The Cats of Our Lives: Funny and Heartwarming Reminiscences of Feline Companions.
- This is a nice book to give to a cat owner. It has 79 pieces about cats, written by a variety of people with the common bond of loving cats. It begins with a poem by T.S. Eliot on the three names that each cat has (and you thought that your cat had only one name). Dave Barry contributes his look at cats. Don Knotts tells us how his cat gets stranded while climbing tall, mesh drapes. You may not have a dry eye after you read Gail Brennan's, "Ode to Sissy." There is a judge who keeps his cat in his courtroom for its calming effect during trials. There are stories by pro athletes and by people in all walks of life, each sharing a love of cats. We see Socks (President Clinton's cat), Garfield, and Felix. It's an enjoyable book.
- This is a terrible, stupid, annoying book. One pointless anecdote after another, ninety percent of them being along the lines of "Well we had this great cat once, she kept having kittens and oh they were so cute. She finally got run over by a car one day and we were sad. We will always remember our wonderful cat."
One story excerpted from a book by Sonia Fitzpatrick abruptly stops several paragraphs before the end. Another seems to be just as stupidly truncated, but I couldn't verify it, as I could with Ms. Fitzpatrick's story.
Who are the rest of these people? And why did anyone see fit to fill an entire book with their badly written and (mostly) irresponsible reminiscences? Do yourself a favor, skip this book.
- Ever want a book with stories and snippets about cats or a good gift for a cat lover, this is it!!!
