2 comments about The Cat-Sitter's Handbook: A Personalized Guide for Your Pet's Caregiver.

  1. Am buying another copy for a gift and have already given several friends this book - those who 'hire' friends, neighbors or co-workers to pet sit their cat while they are gone. This info-packed little book has been well received by both cat sitters and cat owners. It doesn't claim to be for professional pet sitters and thus, should not be judged as such. Do you want your cat to be in good, informed hands in your absence? This little book lives up to it's name.

  2. As a pet sitter I can tell you- If you want to spend your time filling out this book, go right ahead. But you should know that your pet sitter will NOT have time to read it. If you hire a reputable and experienced pet sitter, he/she will ask you many of the same questions you will find in this handbook. Moreover, your pet sitter should already know first aid and general pet care tips. If they don't, don't hire them!

2 comments about Feng Shui for Cats: By Cats, For Cats.

  1. This is a funny, silly, tastefully illustrated hardcover book that's supposed to be a how-to addressed to cats and made to appear as if it was written by a cat itself (using phrases like "on the other paw..." and the like). For the human reader, its intention is to provide insights on understanding their pets better and create an ideal environment for them, using the principles of feng shui. It thoroughly covers all aspects of the cat's life from health, raising kittens, dealing with humans, feeding, play and sex.

Cats, of course, know exactly what they need. They don't have the dexterity for decorating, though, thus still need humans to arrange the furniture and stuff. Besides, humans think that the place is theirs, when in fact, it's not. And for that, it gives the cat reader tips to show the human its rightful place in the scheme of things by taking control of their environment. Like how they can get their food bowl to the wealth area by completely refusing to eat until it is moved to where they want it to be.

Kidding aside, while the book is not intended to give serious information, it is perfect for the reader who's familiar with his cat's behavior and like all cat owners, is attempting to make sense of the pet's haughty nature. The human author (credited as an "editor" of the fictional cat authors) attempts to uncover the cat's enigma by putting himself in its shoes while having a good laugh over it. Of course if cats could really read, it would probably be shaking its head at the hopelessness of human beings and eye them with pity.

Perfect for bathroom reading, especially with a cat impulsively scratching your leg.

  2. Editor Roni Jay is the author of an excellent book applying the principles of Feng Shui to the garden. Here her four cats use these teachings to improve their territory, food, fortune, and to control their human. The illustrations are playful and lively, the information accurate. Recommended for cats of all ages.

1 comments about The Big Book of Cats.

  1. The 1st thing I look for in Cat books are 'real' pictures of cats and was a little disappointed when this offered none.

Nevertheless, the information contained would please any cat lover. Ranging from cat-breed information to cat names, cats in history, cats in Hollywood and cat quotations, you would surely love this 'little' big book of cat tidbits.

The text are in large print with cute illustrations. You'll never be a moment bored.

5 comments about Cat Haiku.

  1. Deborah Coates, Cat Haiku (Warner, 2001)

    Why would someone write
    one hundred fifty haiku
    (actually, senryu)

    about cats? As well
ask why the felines would put
    up with such a thing. ** ½

  2. CAt Haiku is a wonderful book. I have practiced psychiatry for 45 years and would have trouble explaining my patients as well as Deborah Coates explains her cats. She gets to the essence of being a cat- as far as any human being can. She also makes it fun to be in a room with a cat and to try to figure out which Haiku fits your cat on any given day or hour. William L. Clovis, M. D.

  3. It's fun, it's funny/ it's all about cats-what's not/ to like? Get it now!

  4. It's a funny idea, but really has nothing to do with Haiku poetry at all. And that, I'm afraid, is VERY disappointing. I recommend checking out "Take A Deep Breath: The Haiku Way to Inner Peace" to anyone who is really interested in understanding and truly enjoying Haiku poetry.

  5. I found this book in a local 'art shop' and loved it then, but refused to pay full price for it. It was delightful enough to stay in my mind (2 years later), though, and now when I find copies on sale, I buy them to give them as gifts to my literate 'friends-of-cats'.

  1. i think this is perfect book to get comprehensive knowledge for NAVLE exams,NBVME list of diseases are best discussed in this book i strongly recomend foriegn vets to read this book.
    FAISAL ZIA.

  2. After using many different references for the first half of my internship, this is the book I most often reach for now. The information is as user friendly as the 5 Minute Consult (an improvement here), and more up to date. There are many, many helpful tables and figures, and the addition of a formulary in the back is welcome. While no book can provide all the answers, I find 90% of them in here. My only complaint is the coverage of emergency care could be tweaked. In critical care situations, when I need information regarding a particular emergency in a hurry, this is not the book I turn to first.

  3. A very handy tome of immense value in the stress situation for quick information as well as for in depth study to bone up on latest techniques and those possibly a bit rusty. I can strongly recommend this, it is excellent value. I would want a more updated model though and hope for a new edition soon--I hope the authors are reading this?

  4. A book which explores the small animal Veterinary field, uses simple and clear explainations to many different issues in that field. As a student for Veterinary Medicine in the clinical stage, I open the book very often. the book is very readable and friendly for students which their first language is other than English (unlike many others we all know).

    You must have it !!!

3 comments about Best Friends: Portraits of Rescued, Sheltered, and Adopted Companion Animals.

  1. Sumner Fowler is an excellent photographer. I knew him in high school when he was a photographer for The Birmingham Eccentric. Even back then he had an eye for the unique. He knew what he wanted and was patient enough to wait for the right lighting, the right nod of the head or the look in the eyes. He saw life through a photographers lens. His talent has grown and he has captured the delightfullness of the animal world. Best Friends, is evidence of where Sumner's heart, as well as talent lies......

"How many hearts with warm red blood in them are beating under cover of the woods tonight, and how many teeth and eyes are shining! A multitude of animal people intimately related to us, but of whose lives we know almost nothing, are as busy about their own affairs as we are about ours." John Muir

Sumner's camera takes us into the lives of the animals he has photographed here. I highly recommend the book. The proceeds go to an excellent cause.

  2. Each photo in this book touched me in some way for the better. Mr Fowler certainly has a magic touch with his camera. I'm hoping he comes out with more books.

  3. Beautiful black and white photographs--the look of unconditional love in a beagle's eye, a sleepy yawn from a tabby. These and other photos (there's horses too!) of rescued animals make this book completely heartwarming.

3 comments about Purrr: A Cat's Life: The Scrapbook for Pets.

  1. What a great product! I absolutely love it! It's beautifully crafted, so easy to use, and the final product, complete with all of my photos, is just perfect. I will definitely buy the dog scrapbook, as well! [It's called Ruff: A Dog's Life] I recommend it to everyone!

  2. This is the first scrapbook I have ever ordered. I really love it! I have been looking for a scrapbook to do for my cats for ages and I am so glad I discovered this one on Amazon! It is so easy to put together and a lot of fun. Very affordable, too! I only wish more pages were included or available for purchase! I am sure I will buy more, and I will purchase the dog version as well!

  3. I recently purchased this product for my daughter who just went off to college. I wanted to create something special to send to her feauturing her favorite kitty. This scrapbook was amazing! It took longer to find the pictures than it did to complete the scrapbook. This product comes highly recommended. She loved the finished product and thought I had spent hours making this book. Little did she know, it was very simple!

5 comments about The Mythology of Cats: Feline Legend and Lore through the Ages.

  1. Not a scholarly compendium, The Mythology of Cats is more an engaging collection of folkloric stories, drawn from history, literature, and religion. Organized into 25 sections by various breeds and filled with pithy quotes, this book covers such ideas as feline aloofness and self-containment, the portrayal of this mysterious animal in works by such notables as Steinbeck, Twain, and Yeats, and the role of the cat in various times and cultures. The evolution of breeds old and new, wild and tame, is briefly but informatively discussed, as are such traits as clairvoyance, intelligence, and loyalty. This is a book for readers who have experienced satisfying relationships with these wonderful creatures, informative and entertaining at the same time. Enjoy!

  2. Or, to be more accurate, "new age" huggy-kissy rubbish.

From the introduction: "All cultures have such mundane, yet mystical cats, and they are role models of a very positive kind, unlike the more popular archetypes of disaster, demonology, darkness and depravity. For though these are also founded in mythology, we believe they are demeaning and do not bear further publication."

So, there you have it. A mythology of cats book that proceeds, because of serious author bias, to ignore all the dark myths about cats and only give the reader the good ones. This is akin to writing "the mythology of wicca", say, and ignoring all witch burnings and dark magic, or doing the mythology of the Aztecs and ignoring the human sacrifices. In other words, it's a waste of your time, to say nothing of being poorly laid out with no rhyme nor reason to the collection of anecdotes that fill it.

I paid $2.50 for this book. What I learned was that I am never buying a mythology book again without reading a few chapters of it first to see if it's this kind of bowdlerized pablum. And I want my $2.50 back.

  3. I enjoyed this book, immensely! I'm an avid book swapper, but this book is definately a "keeper" and will not be leaving my bookshelf!

  4. an absolutely delightful overview of the wonderful world of feline.

This book is written in a very friendly style that starts off as a light read but moves into deeper territory akin to Joseph Campbell. Explores the rich life of cats with highly interesting forays into unexpected realms.

While I love this book, I was distracted from time to time by statements that I suppose were misprints, "This cat, though small at around eighteen pounds." I wondered why these were not caught and rectified for later editions.

Anyway, the two authors write with much authority, wisdom and respect that renders other books about cats inferior.

A great read in many ways!

  5. I'm a big fan of cats, believing them to be superior in nearly every way that counts to dogs. But a love of cats is not enough to get one through this poorly crafted book. "Poorly crafted" is precisely what I mean. The Hausmans appear unable to decide whether they are relating anecdotes, myths, popular culture, vetrinary science or something else altogether. The narrative tone varies from pedantic to pseudo-scholarly to mind-numblingly pedestrian - sometimes in the same sentence. There is an appalling lack of structure, as well. The Hausmans thought it would be cute to section the book into chapters by cat breeds, but are unable to stick to their own plan. Each chapter itself is supposed to be divided into a "lore" section and a "fact" section, but, again, the division is truer in name than reality. Ultimately, the whole thing reads somewhat like Robert Graves' analysis sections in The Greek Myths without the scholarly impact. I can think of more succinct summary of the book than "lame."
