5 comments about Breeding Pedigreed Cats.
- I bought this book because I am considering breeding cats a later point and I wanted to find out a little bit of what it involves. This book was really great at going through the basics and details of showing, breeding and running a cattery. And, not only that, but it's actually enjoyable to read. I highly recommend this book.
- This is a wonderful book...a must have!
Re: "What do you love": There is nothing wrong with breeding beautiful purebred cats or dogs... If people raised and loved each OTHER right there would be no need for shelters. If children are taught from a young age to love and respect each other then compassion for ALL living things will naturally follow. I believe good, honest breeders are the perfect example of that! They take on great responsibility with endless love, devotion and compassion.
- This is a well done book. A new version with color photos would be a bit more helpful, but for someone considering breeding it's a must, and even for a more seasoned breeder it's a good brush up. I take it out every time I have a litter. As an aside, the between chapter "cat/people" jokes make it an ejoyable read. Some of the references are a little outdated, but the material is not; some things don't change that much. Breeding cats is one of those, highly recommend.
- There is a reason that people are willing to pay $150+ for the collectible book that is out of print. Luckily my fiance and I won it at a local cat show that had a raffle. We had no idea it was worth so much at the time, but devoured it and thought it was excellent.
This book is nearly a complete resource for all breeders, if I could choose only one cat book to keep this would be the one. It is well written, thought-out, and VERY informative. Any question you have about breeding is answered here. It is simply the best cat breeding book I have ever read.
- I have been breeding pedigreed cats for 22 years. This is the best book on the subject I have ever read. I wish I had this book when I began. A MUST for cat breeders.

3 comments about Scottish Fold Cats: Everything About Acquisition, Care, Nutrition, Behavior, Health Care, and Breeding (A Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- I was given this book when I was given my cat, Mara Jade. The book was for 2 main reasons. One was to explain and understand this most loveable breed. The other was to show off my cat's grandfather, who is one of the champion Scottish Folds showcased in the book. It is a good book for new owners.
- I recently bought a Scottish Fold. (Partly because they look so darn cute and partly -- okay mostly -- because of Peter Gether's Norton books.) Being the "completist" that I am (some prefer the term obsessive), I had to buy this book too to make sure all was well with Bradbury (yeah, he's named after the famous author).
Unfortunately, Maggitti's book doesn't really satisfy my passion and curiosity for this fascinating breed of feline. For one thing, the book seems slightly outdated. And the pages look -- and often read -- like those of a textbook. Plus, the information seems superficial, almost too basic (even for a feline newbie like myself). In other words, don't expect a lot of passion and humor and a breezy, conversational style. Expect some fairly good information. Expect a slightly detached (read: dry) presentation of facts. Expect a reference book that'll likely sit on your shelf gathering dust once you've flipped through it once. Since there are very few books available strictly about the Scottish Fold breed, you're pretty much stuck with this book or nothing. And, given that choice, I'd say go ahead and buy this book. It's really not as bad as I'm making it out to be. (But it's not a whole lot better, either.) The bottom line: Until someone comes along to write an "owner's manual" book as fun as the Scottish Fold breed of cat, I suggest you turn to Peter Gether's three books: The Cat Who Went To Paris...A Cat Abroad: The Further Adventures of The Cat Who Went to Paris and His Human...and The Cat Who'll Live Forever: The Final Adventures of Norton, The Perfect Cat and His Imperfect Human.
- As new owners of this unique breed, we needed a book that explained everything from care to communication and personality. This book has it all. Especially helpful was the section on communication where we learned not only how to communicate with our new Fold, but also what our Fold was telling us through his body language. This book definitely helped us welcome our pet into his new home, and facilitated bonding between pet and owner.

4 comments about The Sphynx: The Hairless Cat (Kid's Cat Library).
- It is a good book to learn basics about the breed - good recommendation for those not already knowledgeable with the breed.
- I enjoyed this book but I wish someone would write a book in more detail on this wonderful feline!
- This is a GREAT book on the Sphnyx cat. I have the book and the title of this book in the Amazon system is spelled incorrectly. The actual title is spelled the way the breed is spelled and should read, The Sphynx: The Hairless Cat. So ignore the first angry review - it's wrong!
- I'll admit I haven't read the book, but why should I? The breed's name is the Sphynx not sphinx. If the title's incorrect what about the information? I'll wait until there's a book that at least has the breed's name right.

5 comments about I & Claudius: Travels With My Cat.
- Not one of the best travel-related pieces I've read. Driving alone, de Vries has no-one to play off against so in order to provide some dialogue, she makes constant references to conversations with her cat throughout the book. This is funny the first time but should be left as a one-off joke. De Vries flogs it until it become irritating to read.
In addition to this, I would assume large tracts are fictitious: the very odd-coincidencies, the almost-slapstick moment where she knocks an important boss into a pool, the 'stay with people after knowing them 10 minutes' etc. It can't have happened this way. One for the cat lovers; for readers who like travel, try something else.
- Of all travel books I've read so far, this one has got to be the most hilarious and magnificent. Clare writes with gusto and love for her cat and of travel, and one feels as if they're right along with the couple as they travel throughout the USA. Another great novel to read by De Vries is "Of Cats and Kings", which is equally, if not more, stunning and entertaining. Readers don't have to be cat people to laugh at De Vries antics and mishaps. I would highly reccommend this novel to any female of any age, for it deals with feminine humor and romance.
- Everyone really seemed to love this book so I thought I'd check it out, but besides being easy to read I didn't find much merit in it. In the end she just really annoyed me. Her generally snippiness was people made me cringe, and she never seemed very aware of her surroundings (although I give her props for the incident in the bar in Texas, I believe it was). As a traveler, I could never imagine trusting total strangers like she does. Sure, I know that if you don't take risks you miss out on a lot, but the fact that she lived to write this book is amazing in and of itself considering the huge amount of trust she puts in total strangers.
Perhaps not being a huge cat lover was also problematic. I couldn't relate to her rantings about Claudius. I think my biggest beef with the book, which I notice other people really enjoyed, was Claudius's insights. I found it very distracting how she'd experience something, and then Claudius would chime it with its historical value. There were amusing parts, such as her time in Las Vegas, but all in all, I wouldn't recommend this book. Well, maybe to a cat person.
- Clare's relationship with Claude is priceless and gorgeous, and though perhaps the future customer probably doesn't really care to read about the reviewer, my experiences are directly related to my love of this book, and frighteningly uncanny...she's right on the mark with this one and I know there are more out there who'd agree.
Just as Clare was, I am 28 years old, lost my mother to cancer , and had travelled across North America with my beloved cat, Sampson, twice when I read this book.( I would like for the record to state that he is equally as magnificent as Claude) and like her, I am terrified more than anything in the world to lose him. Clare's relationship with Claude is painfully sincere, and I feel less of a maniac to hear that someone else was as obsessed and driven by her fears and dependance on shopping as her own retail therapy. Her confused love for America and Americans, as well as road tripping is hilarious and well shared by this reader. Though I cried buckets, laughed out loud more than once and am still somewhat heartbroken (there is one small paragraph that brings sobs to my throat just to think of it-beautiful), it moved me immensely and all I wanted to do was get home to my boy when I finished it. For anyone who loves their pet (any pet) like a child this is your reminder why you do. Marvelous, Clare! Is there anywhere we can write to her? Does anyone know?
- Of course you will read all the other reviews here, and they are pretty right-on. Clare is a bit of a female Holden Caulfield; she is amusing and appealing while going through real trauma and not always behaving well. Unlike Holden of course, she is real and this is a true story. However, do not mistake "I & Claudius" for a how-to-travel-with-your-pet manual or a travel guide to the United States. This is HER story (and Claudius' ). I cried so when it ended-- because it was beautiful and because I was sorry it was over!

2 comments about Catmopolitan.
- My mom was always reading cosmopolitan back in the 80's plus she always loved cats; so naturally when "Catmopolitan" came out she had to have it. She bought it for me actually and it was one of the cutest and funniest things I've ever seen. I wound up losing that book years ago but came across it at a local library bookstore for $1.00. It still makes me think of her. If you get a copy of "Catmopolitan", I can promise you that you wont be dissapointed. It has a very 80's feel to it so it might seem a little outdated but cats dressed up like models and advertising for nail polish and hair dye is pretty hilarious. There's even an advice column with name variations like "Irma Purrs" etc. Definately adorable.
- This book has some of the most interesting qualities I have ever seen!!! You should read this parody because of the realism. Ilene Hochberg has such wit and talent to think of these ideas, that I have been inspired! I love her way of putting cats into the purrspective of life. P.S. Take a look at the very back page/cover to see what my friends and I call the "Macarena Cat". Remember- Cats Rule, Dogs Drool!

2 comments about Bewitching Kittens (Zebra Regency Romance).
- The first story is titled SANCTUARY and is about a lady set on protecting the forest creatures within her property. When the new owner of the surrounding land comes with his friends for hunting, the protectress uses magic to call all the animals onto her land so the hunters have no game. The second tale is titled CHARLOTTE'S KITTEN. A lady becomes a widow when her husband falls from his mount while away with friends. A small gray kitten appears to care for widow and the mount. The last tale is LORD TREVOR'S TOMCAT and is about an ugly, black tomcat, adopted by Lord Trevor, who ends up leading a young lady to ruin.
***** Three Regency tales by authors Janice Bennett, Patricia Bray, and Cathleen Clare. Of course, since the novel came out in an October magic is involved in these romances. Wonderful! *****
Reviewed by Detra Fitch of Huntress Reviews.
- Three delightful stories. Patricia Bray's Charlotte's Kitten is wonderful. I laughed and cried. It's a 3 hanky that redeems you at the end with a warm feeling of love. Ghost is the great "secret" hero of the story. Charlotte is cherished the way everyone would want to be. This talented author pulled it all together to make a wonderful read! Halloween is over, but Charlotte's Kitten is timeless.

5 comments about Chloe Anne: Force of Nature.
- Chloe Anne - Force of Nature is the endearing true-life story of the self-assured, well-fed, and thoroughly beloved pet cat Chloe Anne, told directly from Chloe's point of view. She has no qualms about expressing her feline feelings to author and de facto cat mother Valerie Oblath. The result is an engaging chronicle of Chloe Anne's adventures, including imprisonment in the Big House, her inquisitive exploration of the washing machine, her encounters with ducks, and much more. An episodic delight to read in quick bursts, or all at once (perhaps while one's own purring pet demands obligatory lap time), Chloe Anne - Force of Nature is highly recommended for cat lovers everywhere.
- If you've ever wondered what might be going on in your cat's mind, this is a wonderful story to read. Chloe Anne is a beautiful, savvy, sophisticated (and somewhat voluptuous) cat who tells the story of her adoption and life with her new mom from her own point of view. She touches upon all of the most important feline subjects: eating, sleeping, grooming, and of course curiosity.
This is a truly touching story, and especially a must-read for cat-lovers!
- Meet Chloe Anne - a voluptuous, long-haired kitty. Full of curiosity and charm, she knows she's "too beautiful for words."
Chloe Anne begins life as Penny, before being incarcerated at the Big House, and before author Valerie Oblath adopts her. Living with her new Mom and sister, Chloe Anne never runs out of ways to amuse herself and find trouble. But despite her mischief, she's secure in the knowledge that her Mom loves her, and she'll never have to worry about ending up in the Big House again.
This humorous tale of Chloe Anne's adventures is a joy to read. Even though it's impossible to tell what a cat is really thinking, Valerie Oblath has created a convincing chat with this delightful feline. But even more than that, she shares her own warmth and devotion to the cats who share her home.
Anyone who's ever lived with and been loved by a cat will enjoy reading this book.
Reviewer: Alice Berger
Bergers Book Reviews
- Sent to the Humane Society when her owners had to move, Penny the cat is soon adopted and her new mom renames her Chloe Anne. Chloe loves her new mom and home, but can't help being a bit adventurous. Many of her adventures are harmless - befriending a duck for example; some are messy (it's not a good idea to explore fireplaces); but some are scary (Chloe decides to investigate how a washing machine works). Chloe doesn't mean to upset her mom, but she is a cat after all. Is it her fault that her brother and sister aren't as adventurous as she is?
Told in the first person by Chloe Anne, "Chloe Anne: Force of Nature" is a delightful, very funny book. Chloe Anne belongs to author Valerie Oblah, who clearly loves and understands cats. If cats could really write and think (besides about food and sleep) they would no doubt think like Chloe Anne. Chloe Anne never means to get into mischief, it's just that there's so much to explore and the world is a pretty big place. The humor throughout the book is at times laugh out loud funny (I especially liked the parts when Chloe goes out to explore something, falls asleep in the middle of exploring, then wakes up and goes on as if uninterrupted). Anyone who has ever been owned by a cat will have experienced their cat doing at least one of the things Chloe Anne does and will now know what their cat was thinking while doing it!
Cat lovers will enjoy "Chloe Anne: Force of Nature".
- When I finished reading this book, the first thing I felt was that I was already missing listening to the chatty, opinionated, touching, funny, haute-couture character who is Chloe Anne and who is a cat. To say that Chloe Anne is a cat is somehow to misrepresent her. Chloe Anne (nee Penny, short for Penelope) comments on anything and everything, and it is amusing to hear what she has to say. Judge for yourself. In the following passage she describes her stay at the pound: "The first night or so was hard. All alone. Even surrounded by my fellow prisoners. I felt hopelessly alone. And let me tall you, the Humane Society will not be the path to my formal societal debut. But you already know that, don't you? There is no need to mince words here. I'd been sent to the Big House. No room with a view. Dry food in a bowl, filled once a day. And so confining. The bidet right next to the food bowl, Mon Dieu! I'd been incarcerated, locked in a cell behind bars, sentenced without a trial. And while this was no Alcatraz (Wasn't Burt compelling in that role? His Birdman kept my eyes riveted to the screen!) It seemed I was there for the long run."
And so the narrative flows with cultural, societal and literary references woven into its canvas. Consider just the chapter titles: "To Sleep, Perchance to Dream," "A hiss is just a Hiss, "I Have a Dream". Sparks, hilarious and touching, are flying at the juncture of the context referred to, for example, Hamlet's supreme anguish in "To Sleep, Perchance to Dream" and that of Chloe Anne's immediate concern with a comfortable warm place where she could settle down to sleep, or doze, or nap, or slumber. An exhaustive study of the differences between these states is cleverly and thoroughly noted.
The narrative and the character are bubbly, funny, full of clever surprises, and amusement. The book is tastefully designed; every detail is attended to so much so that I suspect that even the measurements of the rectangular shape of the book have been chosen to satisfy the golden ratio.
I agree with Betty White (actress/author) who has read the book and said, "I feel as though I know Chloe Anne--all of her--and I love her a lot. So will you."
