4 comments about Two Cats and the Woman They Own: or Lessons I Learned from My Cats.

  1. "Two Cats and the Woman They Own: or Lessons I learned from My Cats", by Patti Davis. Chronicle Books, CA, 2005 ISBN: 0-8118-5166-4. HC 96 pgs. 7 ¼" x 5 ¼".

Respected author of 6 books and daughter of former president Ronald Reagan, this book is wonderfully illustrated by Ward Shumaker, renowned illustrator

A captivating glimpse of a true cat lover's experience in parenting and/or adopting a family of felines including Aretha, Spider, Skeeter, Lucas and Scoundrel - at times less than successfully.

A tender look at felines, sometimes askance or sideways for those with Asperger's or High-functioning autism, with learned musings on feline idiosyncrasies and a tabulation of 12 "Life Lessons" displayed by these little tigers whose language is decipherable to the possessed.

  2. Patty Davis has written a delightful, uplifting little book which acurately describes interacting on a daily basis with adopted and stray cats. I bought three copies for gifts!

  3. I loved this book...I keep it on my coffee table...it is a treasure. I could relate to every chapter and anyone who is a cat lover/owner...will love this book. I recommend very highly.

  4. I was curious about this book because I too was a woman who just didn't care for cats. At least I THOUGHT so. Then one came to stay at my house when my daughter couldn't have a pet at her apartment, and we were soon joined by another when my son begged for one. The two cats have been so entertaining and my level of tolerance and love has grown. I'm now a "cat lady!" I think we may even get more cats. That aside, Patti's book was written in a friendly and easy way... very enjoyable to read.

  1. Beneath all the humor (and the book IS funny), there is a lot of good advice on caring for the cats in your life.

2 comments about Cats Naturally: Natural Rearing For Healthier Domestic Cats.

  1. I've read many books on this subject and find this book to be out dated. Some of the author's recommendations are not up to today's standards.

  2. Juliette de Bairacli Levy is first and foremost one of the world's most famous herbalists. She lived and learned from the Gypsies of Europe how to grow and use medicinal plants for people and for animals. There is a wonderful video of her life by Tish Streeten called "Juliette of the Herbs". Cats Naturally is based on raising cats according to the cat rather than the human. Diet is determined in large part by their diet in the wild, medicines according to their own means of healing when left alone. There are herbal remedies for parasites and insects (mange, ear mites, ticks, lice, fleas & ringworm), and herbal remedies for digestive problems and other ailments. It is a great book and one I have used happily with my very beautiful and very healthy cats. This is a very sensible book by a very sensible, wise and loving woman.

1 comments about Burmese Cat (Pet Love).

  1. I purchased this book looking for information on the temperment, history, and different varieties of Burmese cats. That said, as it is in a "breed series", I expected some general cat information, but hoped for more "meat" about the Burmese breed specifically.

    The good points:
    - It does cover information about the breed's history and origins.
    - It has 27 pages of material about the breed (mostly history).
    - It has good pictures of various burmese colors.
    - It has some useful general information on disease identification
    - All of the photographs are in color and are of good quality. There are MANY photos throughout the book.

    The bad:
    - It ONLY has 27 pages about the burmese and some of that is "cut and paste" style general cat-fancy history.
    - It mainly focuses on the British style burmese and the standard given is the british standard. It only mentions the american style burmese a few times and those are in conjunction with the "contemporary" burmese.
    - Although it mentions the "contemporary" and "traditional" american styles and the british style, I can only find one picture of a contemporary.
    - It does not go into detail (with photographs) about what makes each of the styles different.

So, in summary... If you really want just pictures of Burmese with general cat information, this would be a good book for you. Also, if you just want to see many pictures of Burmese (99% British style) then this would be a good resource.
If you want specific information on Burmese temperment, genetics, etc...Look elsewhere.

4 comments about Purina Encyclopedia of Cat Care.

  1. We have several little cat friends around the home and this is a great "general reference" on cat care. It is easy to read and well indexed with loads of information on what to do to keep your cat happy and healthy. For "cat first aid and emergency care", however, I would recommend an additional book sold on Amazon, "Help! The Quick Guide to First Aid for Your Cat." By Michelle Bamberger (DVM). She really outlines, with excellent drawings, what to do in a life or death emergency situation with your cat. With both of these books, from Amazon, you'll have an excellent library on cat health and emergency care.

  2. Responsible cat owners know that understanding and caring are essential to owning a healthy, happy animal. The Purina Encyclopedia of Cat Care is a reference book featuring information about behavior, care, breed characterists and health concerns. The book fetures an A to Z format making information easily accessible with a detailed index.

----Kathryn Gallagher, Cat Fancy Magazine, June 1999 reviews

  3. The Purina Encyclopedia of Cat Care won the 1998 Muse Medallion from the Cat Writers Association for being "Best Care & Health Cat Book of the Year."

  4. I want to go to University and become a vet, but until then I am using this excellent book as a guide! So far it's helped me to save my kitten from LUTD (Lower Urinary Tract Disease) which can be fatal if not caught. The pictures and sympton charts are absolutely phenominal, I don't know what I would do without this book. I've learned so much, I consider this book my cat Bible! If you have a cat or are interested in animal care, you must have this book.

5 comments about Born Without a Tail.

  1. A wonderful gentle book about a woman's escapades with all the animals that wander into her life. Not all the stories have happy endings but all are true and written from the heart. I almost felt that the book was being read to me because the writing was so natural and down to earth. All of us animal lovers will see bits and pieces of ourselves in her. This is a lovely book that I will keep and re-read every so often. A terrific book.

  2. If you are an animal lover and have ever shared your life with an animal, you will enjoy this book. It is a loving tribute to all the author's animal companions. The stories are well written and often moving. I especially enjoyed the recollections of the author's childhood and the powerful image of a child wishing (and pretending) that she had a tail.

Each chapter focuses on one animal in chronological order of when the animal joined the author's life. I sometime found the time line to be a bit confusing as various animals lives overlapped. The book also left me wanting more, specifically more of the personal of the author. The animals take center stage, and although she interacts with the animals, the author is often very much in the background.

I do hope that Cayr Ariel Wulff writes more about her experiences. Will she get to live with that wolfish dog? Will Dalene get her dream of a Great Dane? I hope so. If not, I'm sure that whatever animals come in their place will bring their own wonderful stories.

  3. Just finished reading Born Without a Tail. Could not put it down. A very funny and touching look into the lives of rescuers. Any animal lover would love this book.

  4. I loved this book. It was captivating, heartfelt, and inspiring. I was so bummed when I got to the end. I wanted more. I loved that pictures of all of the beloved animals were included. I felt like I knew every last one of them. This is a great book for any animal lover.

  5. Great read for animal lovers, as myself. Very touching stories of how our four legged animals become our life and how we treat them as our babies. I highly recommend this book. The photo of the author with Dillon is just precious. What a face!!
