5 comments about Born Without a Tail.

  1. If you are an animal lover and have ever shared your life with an animal, you will enjoy this book. It is a loving tribute to all the author's animal companions. The stories are well written and often moving. I especially enjoyed the recollections of the author's childhood and the powerful image of a child wishing (and pretending) that she had a tail.

Each chapter focuses on one animal in chronological order of when the animal joined the author's life. I sometime found the time line to be a bit confusing as various animals lives overlapped. The book also left me wanting more, specifically more of the personal of the author. The animals take center stage, and although she interacts with the animals, the author is often very much in the background.

I do hope that Cayr Ariel Wulff writes more about her experiences. Will she get to live with that wolfish dog? Will Dalene get her dream of a Great Dane? I hope so. If not, I'm sure that whatever animals come in their place will bring their own wonderful stories.

  2. Just finished reading Born Without a Tail. Could not put it down. A very funny and touching look into the lives of rescuers. Any animal lover would love this book.

  3. I loved this book. It was captivating, heartfelt, and inspiring. I was so bummed when I got to the end. I wanted more. I loved that pictures of all of the beloved animals were included. I felt like I knew every last one of them. This is a great book for any animal lover.

  4. Great read for animal lovers, as myself. Very touching stories of how our four legged animals become our life and how we treat them as our babies. I highly recommend this book. The photo of the author with Dillon is just precious. What a face!!

  5. What a terrific "feel good" book. Well, written. Leaves you with a sense of hope that there are people who are so compassionate and loving. This is the type of book you want your whole family to read and savour together. I really did not want it to end because I felt so attached to her family of friends and animals. WONDERFUL!

2 comments about A Year of Cats...in Hats: Crafts to Make You Smile.

  1. The cats in this book put a smile on my face!..what fun!

  2. Sheila has done it again! This time she has designed a yearful of cats, each with earsful of seasonal cheer. Uh, I'd better explain. Sheila has designed twelve cats, one for each month, each having month-appropriate hats on his ears. For example:
April's cat has umbrellas in her ears and is named "Don't Rain on My Purrade" and June's kitty is entitled "Will Mew Marry Me?" with a top hat on one ear and a wedding dress on the other.
Who has a great sense of humor?
Instructions are given for making finished quilt blocks for each month, plus other great crafts projects.
    What fun!

4 comments about The Tao of Meow.

  1. Great book for any cat lover

author of "Hobo Finds A Home"

  2. This book is, quite simply, a masterpiece. It manages, at one time, to be a book that anyone who has ever owned (or been owned by!) a cat will find laughing-out-loud funny while at the same time being a fascinating look at Lao Tzu's classic 'Tao Te Ching'.

Each of the poems in Tao of Meow have a lot of similarities to 'Tao Te Ching', which makes the book a fascinating dialogue with Lao Tzu's work. It's an interesting way to gain some new understanding of it. All philosophy should be studied with such a sense of irreverent joy!

This is a book that you'll want to own and have on hand so that you can thumb through it -- either to learn or to laugh -- again and again.

  3. There have been many translations of the Tao Te Ching, but who better to do it than a cat? Cats just naturally understand the wisdom of the Tao. Although this is categorized as a humour book, and is very funny, it in fact a good interpretation of the Tao. Yes, it is meant to be read by humans.

Besides, this book is worth buying just for the sweet picture on the cover.

  4. If you have ever been owned by a cat, you have probably wondered what your pet is thinking at those moments when their smug, aloof feline behavior has you endlessly opening and closing doors, worrying over what cat food will entice their taste buds, or hoping they will come and play with you today. Carl Japikse's cat, Waldo, provides us with many wonderful insights into cat thinking. "The Tao of Meow" is full of anecdotes and cat tales about the simple, common-sense thinking that gives cats access to nine lives, while we, as their faithful nameless ones, have but one life to live in service to them. "Tao of Meow" is a series of 81 short poetry-like pieces reflecting cat thoughts on subjects that range from cats raiding rabbit nests, through a cat's view of human luggage, to insights on what control really means. "Tao" is funny and thought-provoking. Many of Waldo's guideliens for everyday cat living serve as excellent advice for how we humans can live our lives more effectively. This book is a must for anyone who has loved cats and been mystified by their uncanny knack for controlling our human behavior.

5 comments about Shadow Cats: Tales from New York City's Animal Underground.

  1. Janet Jensen is a one of kind feral friend. She not only helps the feral cats in NYC, she understands their nature & needs. I have read many books on feral cats. Most approach them as wild, separate unapproachable animals. Janet challenges that conception. She shows how respect & love for our fellow creatures through understanding & care can cut through red tape, help mobilize caring people and keep a watchful, loving eye on animals that both need us & need their space. A must read for any feral activist.

  2. I just loved this book. I was recommended it by my dogwalker of all people (http://www.petaholics.com). It is a very interesting book, don't miss it.

  3. Shadow Cats was such an exciting story-and I am not even a cat lover. A dog person like me would never have guessed that rescuing kittens on the streets and back alleys of New York City could be so fraught with drama. J. Jensen took me places I never knew existed and I've lived here for 20 years. Her sensitive descriptions of felines made me want to own one. She proves that nature provides us with adventure no matter where we live. I've read stories about safaris in Africa that weren't half this enthralling.

  4. This book is a combination of suspenseful drama, personal journey, and expose of inner city feral cats and those who love them. I couldn't put it down. I wanted to know what happened next to these feral cats with names and personalities, living on the edge of living or dying. Janet Jensen's writing was suspenseful and personal, making me care for these otherwise unwanted and unnoticed creatures of the night. I became acutely aware of an underground of cat lovers who take many risks in order to care for these unwanted orphans. Although it reads like a novel, the book is also full of useful and fascinating information.

  5. Heartwarming look at cats not quite so lucky as those who share our laps and hearts. It also is a facinating portrayal of people who go the extra mile for cats who cross their paths. You do not have to be a cat lover to appreciate this book but by the end of the book you may be one

  1. This book is exceptionally well-done and is so cute! You need this to document important events in your cats life. There are also plenty of pages dedicated to writing about their personality and cute habits. Even if your pet is older, you will love this book. I highly recommend it.

2 comments about Your Outta Control Cat (Outta Control).

  1. This is the best cat behavior book I've ever read. Instead of going into irrelevant explanations about why cats do the things they do, Ms. Church gives practical solutions for behavior problems. I bought a lot of books to try to solve my cat's inappropriate litter box behavior. This is the one did it.

  2. In 2001, this book won the Iams Responsible Cat Ownership Award. Simply and understandably written for anyone of any age, this book, with its attractive cover and informative anectodes and information, is a must-have for any and all cat lover book shelves. Not quite as extensive as this author's book, Housecat (Howell Book House), yet great for just what you need if looking for basic answers. This book includes information on such topics as why to keep your cat indoors, how to keep your indoor cat happy, behavior and training, health, nutrition, scratching and old age, etc. Read this book and others by this author, and keep your cat happy. He/she will love you for it.
