5 comments about Guide to Owning a Maine Coon Cat (Guide to Owning).

  1. "Guide to Owning a Maine Coon Cat" starts out strong with a detailed exposition of the various Maine Coon origin theories: the 'Marie Antoinette'; the 'Viking'; the 'Racoon cross'; the 'Lynx cross', among others (I favor the 'Viking' since Maine Coons and Norwegian Forest Cats look an awful lot alike).

The author then spends a good deal of print on the Maine Coon personality and the breed standard and colors. The photographs are beautiful, professional and in color.

It's when we get to the chapters on care, grooming, and feeding that this book strays away from Maine Coons and becomes generic and uninteresting. The photographs deteriorate into advertisements for various grooming and food products. Some show the covers of other books from the same firm that published this book, i.e. T.F.H. Publications, Inc.

Go ahead and buy this book, but buy it for the first 38 pages.

  2. The basic content of this book is generic to all cats, but what sets it apart from others is the very high quality of its pictures.

The reader can get a very good idea of all the background, behavioral characteristics as well as colors and patterns without a lot of further research. Easy reading for the new MC owner but not as complete as "That Yankee Cat," or "This is the Maine Coon Cat."

  4. The first half of this book is very good detailing the Maine Coon breed, history and standards. Wonderful photos. The second half fails miserably. It is too generic. It does not go into specific details about this particular breed. It just gives the general feeding and caring patterns which are similar to other cats and other books that I have read. It does not tell you what the ideal weight should be, etc. Another area that it fails is to tell you about a specific hereditary trait which I found out about on the internet: hip dysplasia. So only two stars for this book.

  5. This is a small but delightful book. The part about the typical Maine Coon Cats character is very interesting. It also has details about the different coat colors and patterns, showing your cat, and about general cat care. The photographs are top quality.

  1. For The Love Of God, Make Her Stop!!, February 8, 2004
    Reviewer: A reader from USA
I can't get past the first couple chapters. The book is scattered, hard to read and basically unenjoyable. A complete waste of time and money. Plus the foundation of this pseudo-doctor's feeding regime is the Pottenger Cat Study. This is an antequated study from the 1930's that had no controls. Reading it, any nutritionist worth their salt would know the diet Pottenger fed lacked taurine which caused his problems. Why doesn't Dr. Yarnall? Now, we have that and much more in today's food. How else can generations of cats reproducing year after year and living long heathly lives on commercial diets. This book is just one big long scare tactic to sell her product.

But, it has one pratical use. It's a great sleep aid.

  2. This is the book that convinced me to start making my own cat food. Her recipie is so easy to make and all of my cats love it (they each have foods they will and will not eat though). I don't always have time to make the food so I feed some high quality cat foods such as sensible choice, Iams and Whysong wet foods, and inova (the best but harder to find). sometimes I mix half and half. I also realy enjoyed her chapter on cat astrology. The information for each of my cats was right on.

  3. Celeste had figured out a way to keep cats well through preventive medicine--good natural nutrition, herbs, and supplements. Sometimes, all that is needed for your cat to become healthy is for you to start on your own by changing the diet and supplements. Cat Care, Naturally has been checked by several holistic veterinarians for accuracy. The book includes where to contact holistic veterinarians, suppliers of herbs, nutritional supplements, and homeopathic remedies and other modes of treatment and prevention for your cat and dog.

  4. This is another one of my "bibles" for cat care. Her chapters on "Nutrition" are well written, easy to understand and very helpful, as are her chapters on "Natural remedies" and other "Healing Approaches", to name a few. I was first drawn to this book by the title "Never Microwave Anything!" listed in the contents section, (pg 59). It told of the dangers of microwaving your cats food and what it did to the blood. I had been microwaving my cats food to take the chill off of it and it appeared that her blood levels were affected. I stopped immediately after reading this chapter and her blood levels did appear a little better. She was a very sick cat and this book helped me a great deal, with her care. I recommend it to anyone as a helpful guide to caring for your cat, naturally.

  1. This is an absolutely hilarious parody of personal ads. You can't help but laugh out loud at this very funny book. It does contain explicit content, though, so this one isn't for the kiddies!!

  2. This small but amazingly well written book expresses what we all know our cats want to tell us (and other cats) about their dating preferences. The pictures are wonderful. Very amusing and heart warming. A great quick read!

  3. The pictures really caught my eye in this conveniently sized hilarious photo book of kittens & cats. The quips that accompany each picture made me laugh out loud in the store, and I was quickly showing my friends and family favorite pictures and phrases. I definitely plan to buy a couple of these as xmas presents this year, as for $10 and under in cost for a hardcover book, it makes for a great gift for anyone who likes cats or just funny pictures with funnier captions.

1 comments about A Cat in a Chorus Line (Alice Nestleton Mystery).

  1. This incredibly confusing and ultimately idiotic offering left me with this thought. HUH? What was that all about? And who published it?

To begin with, Alice (our protagonist)gets involved because she wants justice for her friend (who she actually barely knows) and can't figure out why he denied his identity to her moments before he was murdered. Since everyone involved only knew him by his real name, it makes no sense. Each time she decides to give up the investigation, she is drawn back because she wants this piece of information. But at the end of the book, we still don't know why he said he wasn't John. And the author doesn't even acknowledge that the information will not be found, maybe by having someone say "I guess we will never know". The issue is just ignored.
I also thought the book was full of too many coincidences. Our heroine is sent to a restaurant by a police officer and it just happens to be owned by her old friend. A bartender that her friend often hires just happens to be neck deep in the the bootlegging of Broadway tapes. The son of an dying playwright is on the board of directors of a cat saving group even though we have no reason to think he particularly cares for cats. And we never really find out why the murder was committed in front of our detective or what the murderer was trying to accomplish. And why would the conspirators bother taking all the illegal tapes and leaving the oddly labeled boxes behind. It must have been time consuming. The only reason I can think of is that the author couldn't think of a sensible way to get the detective on the right track. And remind me why the second murder took place.
Since the murderer seems to have gone mute or possibly insane at the end of the book I guess the author thought that tied up all loose ends.
All in all I thought this book must have been written for possible ten year olds who wouldn't notice the incongruities. I think the author and publisher are just cashing in on the proliferation of cats in the mystery genre right now by writing this ill-conceived tripe. It's no where near as good as the Quilleran series which is pretty light fare anyway.

3 comments about Conversations with Cat: An Uncommon Catalog of Feline Wisdom (Conversations With).

  1. As a cat lover myself, I have marveled at the ways of cats and how they seem to instinctively know what I'm thinking and how I'm feeling. This fact alone was enough to draw me to this book. The other draw was that the picture on the front of the book looks exactly like my best friend of 17 years, Spike, who I lost just a couple of years ago. How could I not read it with him looking at me!!

"Conversations with Cat, an uncommon catalog of feline wisdom" was a quick read. This book is full of questions cat fanciers are curious about. Self described professional animal communicator, Kate Solisti-Mattelon poses the question, "What is it about this little animal that brings out such extreme emotions in human beings?" referring to cats who, throughout history, have inspired artists, writers, poets, and composers alike.

The answers, some humorous especially for those of us who are owned by a cat (or three), others informative, are provided by the "Council of Felines" to the author, through what she describes as a "higher group of consciousness of all cats" so that she gets the big picture as opposed to individual feline opinions. She receives these answers in the form of a spiritual connection, or "divine Consciousness" she describes as a language of the heart. Kate describes herself as a vehicle for this information.

"Conversations with Cat" took me less than a day to read. I found it entertaining as well as informative, though it left me wanting more. The information was interesting, but I felt as if I already knew most of it .... but then I've been having my own conversations with the cats who have owned me since I was a young girl - mostly one sided! I did have all three of my cats sitting at a distance, watching me read this book. I think they approved!

I recommend this book to all cat lovers. It is one that fits in proudly with the rest of my cat book collection!

    -1smileycat :-)

  2. Cat lovers everywhere need to know the answers found in this delightful read. Our felines themselves responde to our most common questions about why they do what they do through Kate's master interpretation of their thoughts. Their responses resonated true in my heart; and each time I picked up the book, my own sweet cat was in my face purring his approval at my choice of reading! Well worth buying!

  3. VERY INSIGHTFUL. CATS AND OTHER ANIMALS ARE TRYING SO HARD TO CONNECT AND TEACH US ABOUT OURSELVES. THIS BOOK IS A QUICK READ. I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN.

2 comments about Everything Cat: What Kids Really Want to Know About Cats (Kids' FAQs).

  1. This is a fun book that answers such questions as 'why did my cat just bring me a dead bird', and 'can you teach a cat tricks'. There are pictures throughout that keep it interesting, and wacky facts such as: the worlds largest cat lived in Australia and weighed 47 pounds. He had a 33 inch waist and lived to be 10 years old.

Beyond the content, one of the main things you need to know is that the book was written for children reading at the 6th Grade Level. [You can always read it to younger children of course, but if you want your child to read it him/her-self, keep this in mind.]

    Four Stars [ B+]
This is a fun book for older children. There are small pictures and 'strange and wacky' facts that keep it lively and entertaining. Resources are listed at the back. The Accelerated Reading/ATOS designation is 6.1; and the book worked pretty well for us to spice up a class project on cats.

  2. A really basic book, wouldn bother must be a better informed book out there and easier to read for kids.

2 comments about Winter Kittens (Zebra Regency Romance).

  1. I liked this book. The first story with Felix was adorable. The only problem I had with this book was the last story. It didn't capture my imagination.

  2. Winter Kittens is an excellent book to pass a cold, wintry afternoon. The three short stories are all very well written, with likeable heroes and heroines, all with soft spots for cats! My personal favorite was "Rescuing Rosebud", the last story of the three. It contained very well written characters, and not only told a romantic story, but also had a few action scenes which were very enjoyable. This book is a good addition to anyone's collection of Regency romances.
