4 comments about Cat Crafts: More Than 50 Purrrfect Projects.

  1. This is a great book for someone who loves cats. There are a lot of projects here, some simple and some complicated. You don't have to follow exactly by the book though, I have to admit, the art for the pins and cat dolls are pretty ugly. Just use you imagination, and you can create better. There are also some facts spread out along the book about cats, and even one dorky one asking if cats can craft with you...silly author. There are simple projects like costumes, dolls, pins, collars, stockings, and much more which are inexpensive and simple. While the cat couch, cat house, clay and paper mache things are a little bit more difficult, and supplies for them a cost a little more. There are also REALLY fancy dishes for "people and cats", (one involves caviar...fish eggs for a patte). All the patterns are in the back too, and they tell you what percentage to photo copy them at. I would recommend this to anyone that loves cats, and loves pampering your pet, and crafting.

  2. After seeing the cat couch on the cover and reading the blurb which described how to make scratching posts and cat beds, I was really anticipating this book's arrival in my mailbox. I was disappointed to discover that mosts of the craft projects are only barely "cat crafts"- they don't enhance a cat's life or well-being, they just clutter up a cat lover's house with amateur looking cat-themed items. I was looking at the project photos at a friend's house and two people asked me if one of the polymer clay/yarn cat soft sculptures was a "cat mummy"- obviously not the goal you're aiming for (unless you're into Egyptian archaeology, I suppose). You won't find anything truly useful in this book as far as cat condos, unique cat toys, etc- just instructions on how to make lampshade covers, puff paint decorated spray bottles, and cat mummy sculptures.

  3. The customer above gave the book one star because she bought the wrong product. This book is for crafters--if that's you and you love cats, this book is for you.

  4. I ordered this book under the assumption that I was getting a book to help me find new ways to entertain my cats. Boy, was I wrong. Most of the crafts include painting litter boxes, creating play houses out of cardboard (that would last 5 seconds in my household), and even human food recipes. Please do not think you're going to entertain your cat with this book (unless he gets to sit on it while you try to read it...that's about as much fun as he/she will get out of it). This book is mainly for people who are terribly bored or are in need of something to entertain their children.

4 comments about My Fat Dog: Ten Simple Steps to Help Your Pet Lose Weight for a Long and Happy Life.

  1. Although weight-loss in dogs involves common sense more than anything else, such as reducing caloric intake and increasing activity, this small book offers most of the tips that will ensure safe weight-loss in any dog. The book is easy to read, and is medically accurate. But perhaps the best lesson to be learned is not to let your dog get fat in the first place. It's easy to succumb to giving your dog that extra treat or table scrap when you see see those pleading eyes, but this temptation should be resisted for the long-term health and longevity of your dog.

  2. The first time I met a dog on a diet, twenty or so years ago, I felt nothing but pity for the poor thing and scorn for its owner. How dare she enforce human standards on her sweet, good-natured lab? Sure, he was a little barrel-waisted, but so what? Let the dog be free!

That was twenty years ago when I was a young pup myself and hated society's pressure on me to be thin. I have a bit more perspective now. I also have a dachshund. I've read that dachshunds are prone to back problems as they get older, and that excess fat aggravates this unhappy condition.

But it's so easy to slip him a little extra dog food or drop a bit of my dinner into his dish after I eat. He loves people food. He also loves training snacks, and the mini-treats in the car, and the food stuffed into his kong to keep him busy when left alone.

He began to expand. I knew I had to take steps. To paraphrase that notorious radio psychologist, Dr. Laura, "I am my dog's owner." I bought this book to help me be a better guardian of my pooch's girth.

It's a very nutritious book! My favorite tidbit is how to know if your dog is really fat of just, ahem, "big-boned." And I also know how much food to feel my dog, and how to read dog food labels. No more dumping food in his dish according to how hungry he looks or how especially fond I am of him at that moment. I guess one of the things I need pounding into my head is that overfeeding is not the same as love. If I want my dog to live long and prosper, I'd better control his diet and give him enough exercise. The author gives lots of ideas on exercise for all kinds of different types of households. Just do it! It matters.

Halfway through the book, there's a startling picture of a fat daschshund with my dog's face and coloring but a lot more pudge. I look at my dog and see his still boundless energy and healthy spine, and I know that picture is what I want to avoid.

I'd like more discussion of different theories of nutrition, because a perusal of the Internet discloses fierce argument over this point, and it seems hard to figure out. But so is human nutrition.

  3. This book is exactly what it advertises itself as - simple. But that does not stop it from being a very valuable source of information on ways to improve your dog's life. There are no high-tech, high-expense suggestions for how to treat your dog just like Paris Hilton treats Tinkerbelle. Instead, Ms. Garvey uses a straightforward approach, giving detailed and specific information on how to improve your dog's general living habits, from diet to exercise and much, much more.

If you are looking for the new Atkins diet for your dog, steer clear. But if you want to help your dog improve his or her overall health for, as the title says, "a long and happy life," you should absolutely buy this book.

  4. I am the author, and I hope you like this book. I was inspired to write both My Fat Dog and My Fat Cat because I had a fat dog, and I know, first hand, how easy it is to overfeed and underexercise your pet...and how it can affect your pet's health and life span. (Our dog is now 12 pounds lighter and lots healthier.) I tried to make the book fun to read, and offer a lot of ways to get your pet started on the road to good health. It can be done, and I want to help. Please visit me on the web at http://www.myfatdogbook.com, and share your stories.

But I also want to tell you that I will be donating a portion of books' proceeds to organizations involved in rescuing and sheltering pets in the devastated Gulf Coast area. Every little bit helps.

5 comments about How to Live with a Neurotic Cat.

  1. Its light hearted, simple, and funny, thats it. Its pretty true, and the illustrations in it are a riot.
Its a humor book, its not meant to be taken literally.

  2. "How to Live With a Neurotic Cat," by Stephen Baker, Gramercy Books, NY, 1999. ISBN 0-517-20734-6. HC unnumbered pages (not counted) with 9 chapters has an Introduction & many Illustrations. 9 1/2" x 6 1/4".

This prolific author gives an informed and knowledgeable accounting of feline behavior, undoubtedly from extensive experience as he effectively describes the collective and individual behavior demonstrated by our 4.5 cats (one comes early AM just to eat) & counts as 1/2). The illustrations by Jackie Geyser are superb and are as good as photographs.

I've often considered all my cats demonstrated paranormal activity and behavior akin to pre-psychotic afflictions, all exhibiting variable degrees of autism and Mama Keikeiaeu demonstrating typical Asperger's syndrome, but with big-time class. Mighty Sebastian at 25# smashes on the steel doors when he wishes to come inside.

I enjoyed Baker's calculating the degree of cats' boredom by their yawning gap: for years I naively ratiocinated it was true fatigue! Our cats, however, cherish prolonged brushings and do not object being bathed (wife does this); so obviously they have an inborn organic brain defect...I'll order each a CAT scan to make the diagnosis.

The book has a serious flaw, to my mind -- the pages are not numbered and I downgraded it for that reason. Else, I love the book.

  3. This book is ONLY a comic relief, there is nothing here that you can learn. The words "How to" in the title are misleading. I was mislead by great reviews here, so want to warn other potential buyers. I bought this book as a gift to my girlfriend because we got a cat and she has never had cats before, only dogs. I was hoping that she will learn something from it. She read the whole thing in about 20 minutes, smiled a couple of times and that's it. Even as a humorous book, it is very silly, repetitive and lacks in quality.

  4. I've given several of these to friends with multiple cats. Hilarious! I flip through every now and then just to chuckle at the illustrations, which are definitely the highlight of the book.

  5. This is a must-have for any cat owner,or someone who's cat owns them, great fun, and very funny!

3 comments about SECRETS OF CAT ATTITUDE REVEALED.

  1. "Secrets of Cat Attitude Revealed" provides the missing insight into the world of cats. Not another boring tutorial, this book is both enlightening AND entertaining! I experienced many "a-ha" moments while discovering much I never understood about my feline friends. "Secrets of Cat Attitude Revealed" is a very eye-opening resource ... one I ENJOYED reading while uncovering "why cats do what they do".

Author Carolyn Bartz is THE guru of the cat kingdom!

From Tips of the Day to the Cat-i-tude Quiz, from cat food labels to watch out for to litter box territory, from the nine lives myth to finicky feline syndrome, this book is a treasure trove of fascinating and useful information. Anyone considering adopting a cat or is already a willing servant to a feline friend can benefit from the perceptive understanding of Carolyn Bartz and "Secrets of Cat Attitude Revealed"!

Thank you, Cat Whisperer, for your outstanding contribution connecting the mysterious world of cats to their less-superior human owners!

  2. SECRETS OF CAT ATTITUDE REVEALED This is an engaging and insightful book for all of us "know it alls". Having journeyed with cats throughout my adult life (over 40 years), I found the author's approach refreshing! There was not only evidence of detailed, exacting, and accurate research, but also a flare and sensitivity to make the "everyday" interaction with cats one of humor and eye-opening achievement. Her love of cats is evident with each topic addressed. While inviting us along on a journey of information (both historical and current day discoveries), most of us will be better at observing and understanding even more than we could have previously imagined! I heartily recommend this book for the cat "expert" along with those who are just starting a life and a journey with a cat(s). Learn from this author's experiences to better appreciate the experiences yet to be shared by us readers during our lives with a cat!

  3. I would rate negative stars if they were available. Please be aware that a lot of misinformation and myth is taunted as factual in this book. It is a silly book and the rare bit of valuable information is available for free on reliable cat sites throughout the internet. CARPE DIEM! I have had cats for 45 years - this book is a disgrace to the publishing company. Not only is the information misguided, but this book is horribly written. If you can think of a spelling, punctuation or grammatical error, it exists in this book! I would be ashamed to have something like this published in my name. The poor misguided author should sue her editor.

  1. "Garfield Takes Up Space" is a cute addition to this book series. Again, with witty lines and one-of-a-kind facial expressions, this book will get you smirking. I recommend.

  2. Everybody out there keep buying Garfield books! They can be worth a lot of money someday and can become collector's items! I'm always going to keep all of mine so when I have kids they can read them!

2 comments about BOTTLEKATZ: A Complete Care Guide for Orphan Kittens.

  1. This is a great book for anyone who bottle feeds orphans. It gives guidance by age of the kittens, what supplies you need, what to expect, etc. It's very helpful!

  2. I have now raised four litters of kittens from a week old to adoption. I can say that in many ways it is harder than raising my twin boys. You don't have the resources for kittens as with kids and they need three times the feeding and stimulation care that kids do!!! Now with this book I have the life line I need to take on another litter. Fostering kittens can be the most heartbreaking and wonderful job at the same time and with this book I will hopefully eliminate the "scary" parts associated with it. Sharon's book is like having a veterinarian at home with me at all times. I am telling everyone I know about this book. It is a must for raising kittens for your home or to adopt out.
Thank you Sharon for sharing your expertise and for making it so easy to read and understand. Please keep up the wonderful work. It is clear you have saved many lives in the past and your book is sure to save many more in the future. God Bless. (from a fellow kittie mom)
