5 comments about Cats: Portraits of over 70 Pedigrees.

  1. It's been over a decade since my little Tabby cat, Gretchen, died at 19; her calico sister, Chowder, lived 13 years (she got diabetes and, for 6 months, I had to inject her with insulin each morning until she finally succumbed to the disease). Some of the best friends I could ever hope for. . . . So, this book was a lot of fun. Those who have cats tend to think of them as clever and smart. So, it was with pleasure that I read the section on cat intelligence (pages 226-227).

The book starts with a quotation about cats from Theophile Gautier, "Who can believe that there is no soul behind those luminous eyes!" The book begins by placing cats in perspective (domestic cats are probably the descendants of the African wildcat), including their evolutionary history and the variety of cats on each continent. Also considered are the ways by which different cultures treat domestic cats, how cats appear in artistic works and literature, and even cat collectibles.

The next section examines different breeds of cats, including recent varieties (e.g., the Savannah originated in the 1980s in North America), and are divided into shorthaired and longhaired cats. Lots of photos and brief descriptions of each type. Just fun to rummage aimlessly through the pages.

The final segment of the book is tellingly labeled "Keeping a Cat." Here are brief essays on cat biology, how to live effectively and in harmony with felines, and a final section on cat health.

A fun book. Discussions of specific topics sometimes left me asking for more. But, that aside, this was most enjoyable.

  2. I own several cats, and always enjoy picking up a book on cats because I find them so fascinating. This is a good book for the novice cat owner. I liked the many color pictures throughout the book, the history of cats throughout the ages and so much more. This book is more contains more information about cats, and their place in history than it does being a pet owner.

The book has many different sections about where cats have come from, when and where they have been regarded in history, and so much more. This book will give you a good background on learning all about cats. The book does contain some information on owning cats, and how to take care of them.

My copy of the book was a paperback book that is about 8 inches high. I know other reviewers may have had a different experience. I found this book to be very entertaining in learning about cats. If you are looking for a book about how to take care of cats, you may want to chose another book. Overall I found this to be an enjoyable and an entertaining read.

  3. I'm submitting my review under this book as it is essentially -- almost exactly -- the same book in a beautiful thick little paperback. I adore this book! Of course it could be because I found "dead ringers" for both my Sabrina (pg60 -- Norweigian Forest cat) & my best friend's Gracie (pg 222-223 in my addition -- a Chartreux) We were both wrong on our cats' heritages. (Adopted.) I always thought she was mostly Maine coon because my neighbor's Norweigian was so much bigger. (Think he's just a tad overweight though.) 'Brina is a fit 15 lbs. I just love her long whiskers, big eyes & loving disposition. She is also good with my little grandchildren.

Anyway, it's like a cat show in a book! Dr. Fogle knows his stuff.

  4. There is some interesting information contained here but it is still a major disappointment. Unless one physically sees the book before ordering, one can easily take note of the 400 pages and feel they are getting something of value for their dollar. However, it should first of all be noted this book is less than four inches high! I found the book just too overwhelming small and frustrating to bother with and certainly not worth the price.

If the reader truly wants value for their dollar, I highly recommend any and all of the books by Desmond Morris, such as "Cat Breeds of the World." Readers should not be disappointed in any of his books. They contain an endless wealth of information and beautiful photographs of cats. In my opinion, all of his books are worthy of a five-star rating and certainly worth the money.

  5. This book was everything I would expect from DK - great pictures, good information, easy to search through, but I did not expect it to be only three inches high! Now I know to look for the dimensions with every book I order. A great book for children to look through, because the book is really to small for adults to use on a regular basis.

4 comments about The Tiger on Your Couch: What the Big Cats Can Teach You About Living in Harmony With Your House Cat.

  1. This book is a very interesting and educational read for any current or prospective cat owner. It offers some unique insights, for instance seeing the use or non-use of a scratching post in view of the cat's territorial instincts.

It is in no way comprehensive, and should be read as a back-up to a more complete guide. As an example, the important issue of de-clawing is not covered at all in this book.

For those who do not feel a compulsion to finish a book all the way to the end (I am such a compulsive person, alas), I would suggest the reader skip chapter 10. It has little to do with house cats, being mostly a "call to action" regarding the state of the tiger worldwide, and a call to use "environmental" products. While there is nothing wrong with the desires to protect the tiger and the planet, I think this is a little out of place in a book that is supposed to be mostly about the care of house cats.

Another weak point is the constant nagging about spaying/neutering. Personally, I will definitely spay/neuter my cat, and I have done so with all my previous cats. I think the vast majority of owners should, since there is unquestionably a cat overpopulation problem, and because it makes for a better pet. But to suggest that only professionals should breed only purebreed cats is excessive. Anyone with a sincere concern for the health and long-term wellbeing of both mother and kittens ought to feel free to breed a cat- provided they take full responsibility for professional health care and for the quality placement of any kittens. Those of us who prefer "alley" cats, and who don't want to pay hundereds of dollars for a kitten have reason to be grateful to loving and responsible breeders of all stripes.

  2. The authors and others in their family have studied big cats all over the world, and they also observed the behavior of housecats and barn cats on a farm in this country. Many of the stories they tell are fascinating and funny, and some are remarkably moving.

  3. I've read dozens of cat care and feline behavior books. While this one is by no means comprehensive (it never claims to be), I still learned A LOT from it. The writing is fun, interesting, and informative. It helps the reader look at domestic cats' behavior from their wild ancestors' perspective. I also like that the book was a husband-wife collaboration. I would've given this 5 stars except for one single sentence in which the authors recommend spaying domestic female cats after their first heat cycle. This theory of the best time to spay was "correct" at the time the book was written. However, more recent studies show that allowing a female cat to experience even one heat cycle greatly increases her risk of developing all sorts of health problem. When an errata sheet correcting that one lone incorrect sentence is included with this book, I will give it my highest review. It's a fun book that will teach you a lot.

  4. This book provided me with many insights to the behavior of my cat. Being a first-time cat owner, I had no idea why my cat acted the way he did. After reading this book, I have come to understand and appreciate Sly, my cat, for his in-born character traits, and to understand all cats in general better! The pictures and stories of the big cats are entertaining in and of themselves, as well, whether you own your own cat or not! This is really a worthwhile book!

2 comments about Cleve Wells Going For Broke: 15 Lessons To Teach Your Young Horse To Be A Willing, Respectful Partner In Hand & Under Saddle.

  1. Even though I am a Hunter O/F rider, I was able to take some pointers from this book and apply it to my flat work and basic listening skills of my horse.

  2. I think it's a wonderful book, and for starting a young horse it's a wonderful guide. Simple, easy step-by-step guides on how to ground drive and then transferring it to saddle, then all the in-saddle work you'll need to have a good, firm riding foundation on your horse. I thought it would have more on groundwork, like some on-the-ground leadership establishing exercises, but I think I just misread it. There IS some wonderful stuff about teaching a young horse to tie, as well as using it and tying them longer and longer to teach patience.

Overall it's a wonderful book for the horse who has the VERY basics down (leading, picking up feet, etc.) and will lead you through the rest, sacking out, tying up, saddling, ground driving, NECK REINING (VERY good section here!), and more foundation building riding lessons.

  1. This may be the ultimate cat book for some but I didn't appreciate the overload of Frenchisms, and the dwelling on mistreatment of cats all through their history. It was an informative piece of work but I found it fairly rough going.

  2. If you like cats, this book is for you. It discusses cats in every area of our lives! Cats in folklore, cats in theatre, cats and the law- the list goes on! I enjoyed this book!
