1 comments about Cats in the Louvre.

  1. Amazon has done a very good job of describing this 80 page book. There are images from several of the departments of the Louvre, including both an overview and a detail focused on the cat. Rizzoli has done an excellent job of reproducing the images.

The book was published in French last year, and both the French and English versions are beautifully produced. The comments by Frederic Vitoux are brief but add real value to the images.

If you find the cover image irresistible, you'll enjoy this lovely little picture book.

5 comments about Test Your Cat's Creative Intelligence: Eighteen Easy-To-Use Test Cards to Verify Your Cat's Artistic Ability.

  1. First of all, after I read these reviews I was SHOCKED. This book is in the HUMOR section! there's absolutely no scientific basis... it's just all in fun! I give it 5 stars for the good laugh it gave me!

  2. My cat tried to eat the book. Does this signal a voracious literary appetite?

  3. My dumb cat just tested 40 points higher than my IQ. Now what do I do?

  4. This book was very interesting, but if you have an older, spoiled kitty, paid previously to just lay around, don't expect a lot. I enjoyed the book, but unfortunately I found that my cats' artistic abilities are limited to NOT looking at the pictures.

  5. The reason I enjoy your book is because I have a great facination in cats I havn't read the whole book yet but I am hoping to save up. I have five cats and enjoy there company. It would make such a lovely gift for family & friends. So go buy the book (test your cats intellagence) and go test your cats knowledge, you never know your cats IQ could just well be better than yours. By Louise Nicholls

4 comments about The Tao of Meow.

  1. Great book for any cat lover

author of "Hobo Finds A Home"

  2. This book is, quite simply, a masterpiece. It manages, at one time, to be a book that anyone who has ever owned (or been owned by!) a cat will find laughing-out-loud funny while at the same time being a fascinating look at Lao Tzu's classic 'Tao Te Ching'.

Each of the poems in Tao of Meow have a lot of similarities to 'Tao Te Ching', which makes the book a fascinating dialogue with Lao Tzu's work. It's an interesting way to gain some new understanding of it. All philosophy should be studied with such a sense of irreverent joy!

This is a book that you'll want to own and have on hand so that you can thumb through it -- either to learn or to laugh -- again and again.

  3. There have been many translations of the Tao Te Ching, but who better to do it than a cat? Cats just naturally understand the wisdom of the Tao. Although this is categorized as a humour book, and is very funny, it in fact a good interpretation of the Tao. Yes, it is meant to be read by humans.

Besides, this book is worth buying just for the sweet picture on the cover.

  4. If you have ever been owned by a cat, you have probably wondered what your pet is thinking at those moments when their smug, aloof feline behavior has you endlessly opening and closing doors, worrying over what cat food will entice their taste buds, or hoping they will come and play with you today. Carl Japikse's cat, Waldo, provides us with many wonderful insights into cat thinking. "The Tao of Meow" is full of anecdotes and cat tales about the simple, common-sense thinking that gives cats access to nine lives, while we, as their faithful nameless ones, have but one life to live in service to them. "Tao of Meow" is a series of 81 short poetry-like pieces reflecting cat thoughts on subjects that range from cats raiding rabbit nests, through a cat's view of human luggage, to insights on what control really means. "Tao" is funny and thought-provoking. Many of Waldo's guideliens for everyday cat living serve as excellent advice for how we humans can live our lives more effectively. This book is a must for anyone who has loved cats and been mystified by their uncanny knack for controlling our human behavior.

4 comments about What Cats Teach Us...: Life's Lessons Learned from Our Feline Friends.

  1. This book makes a nice gift for a cat lover....it has nice pictures with inspirational quotes.

  2. This short book is filled with cute and adorable photos of cats. Each photo is accompanied by a "lesson" -- sometimes wise, sometimes funny, but always put into a fresh context by the photo. A great gift for cat lovers.

  3. This is a delightful collection of feline photography, each photo accompanied by a small quip or word of wisdom that is sure to bring a smile to the reader's face. The pictures are beautiful and well-executed, and the cats shown in them are equally diverse and attractive. My favorite shot has got to be one of a kitten who has somehow gotten him/herself draped inextricably over the arm of a lamp, and dangles in midair awaiting rescue. The caption reads: "Give in and accept help in an impossible situation." This little book would make an excellent stocking-stuffer, or simply a treat for yourself.

  4. This little photo book is absolutely wonderful and makes a great addition to any pet lover's library. The photos are so adorable, and the captions of life's lessons are so clever and cute. A great way to showcase the ways cats enrich our lives.

5 comments about Lost and Found: Dogs, Cats, and Everyday Heroes at a Country Animal Shelter.

  1. The best place to get a pet is from a shelter, and if you read this book, you will learn why. I have always gotten my pets from shelters, but did not know the behind-the-scenes story until I read this (and a few others). Ms. Hess writes for the general reader, and is a bit less introspective than I would have liked, but her information is sound. In fact, I would recommend this book to teenagers, precisely because it is not too high-brow. Today's kids are tomorrow's pet owners, and it is important to educate them in the realities of pet overpopulation, puppy mills, and the fact that pets are not designer accessories, but living beings who require more than some kibble and water.

  2. I highly recommend this book to anyone considering a pet. It makes you think about what repercussions are possible if you obtain a pet on a whim and do not dedicate yourself to training and caring for it. It shows the results of our society's "throwaway" mentality, the lack of education on the effects of pet overpopulation and the way our declining economy has added to the problem by not allowing many citizens the money to afford proper pet care and sterilization.

This books shows a cross section of a typical animal shelter and the fact that there are many not so happy endings, mostly because of humans and their failure to do right by their pets.

  3. I've volunteered at the animal shelter in my town for a few years now, but have never had quite as much insight as this book provided. I get the feeling the shelter in the book has a smaller volunteer base than the shelter I have dealt with based on the details they were willing to share with her. This was a very uplifting book that explained a lot about why shelters work the way they do (ie rules about who can adopt, what happens when they get lost pets, etc.). Unfortunately, it is most likely to be read by the people that already understand these rules and why they exist.

  4. Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. I'm among those who do know what kind of responsibility it takes to own a dog. I'm the happy 'Mom' of 2 terriers, one of which is a rescue dog. It is true about rescued animals - they know they've been given another chance and will give you their love many times over.

Elizabeth Hess was down to earth in showing the trials and successes an animal shelter goes through. If you know someone who's not sure about getting a pet, I highly suggest they read this book. It'll make them think twice. If you know someone with misconceptions that all shelter animals get homes, give them this book as a wakeup call! A pet can take up as much or more of your time than a human baby, but the human race has made dogs, cats and other animals disposeable. There are happy endings as well as sad in the book, but it's worth buying. As the kids would say, we give it a 2 paws up!

  5. This book was so good I could not put it down. A realistic yet compassionate look at shelters today. A must read!

4 comments about Vaccine Guide for Dogs and Cats: What Every Pet Lover Should Know.

  1. This book opened my eyes big time! I recomend it for anyone who owns pets or has kids. It can be a bit technical at times - I had to read some sections twice to really get it, but well worth the effort. I strongly recomend you read this and follow or start with "The nature of animal healing."
This book will also get you to questions vaccines used in humans...autism for your young daughter anyone??

Read it but don't let the quest for knowledge on this subject stop at this book!

  2. Every animal lover should read this in order to truly make the best decisions for your animal.

  3. It is about time someone brings to light the dangers of over- vaccination! This book explores the many dangerous side effects of vaccination, the obscurity of diseases such as Coronavirus, the inadequacies in vaccines such as Leptospirosis, and the lack of science behind annual rabies mandates. The text given is thourough, and thought provoking! Many vaccines are mandated based on fear, and not science. It is refreshing to see an author admit the inadequacies of vaccinations and the laws surrounding them. Vaccines can become dangerous, and cannot be considered harmless, as demostrated in this book.

This book provides a solid outline of data that rubs against the grain! A great mind-opener! It is great for those questioning current vaccination standards, yet will easily rub wrong with those who strongly advoate vaccine usage. The main down-fall to the book is that it focuses on the negative, and gives little alternative beyond not vaccinating. I would use this book as a resource for the negatives of vaccination, yet would do further research to determine if or how you will choose to vaccinate. The book would serve well coupled with Don Hamiltons book Homeopathy for Cats and Dogs: Small doses for small animals, which also gives some interesting insight into vaccinations, and more alternative on how to administer them, if at all.

  4. This book is not a guide as it doesn't guide you to answer the obvious question "if you don't vaccinate, what DO you do??" It discusses all the bad things vaccines do, but gives no solution for protecting your dog against the deadly Distemoer, Parvo and Rabies. Ridiculous.

4 comments about The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Cats, Cat Breeds & Cat Care (The Ultimate Encyclopedia of).

  1. What makes this book useful is the plethora of information it gives on cats as well as the way it is organized. The encyclopedia is quite thorough in detailing not only the various subjects of cats, but types of cats and other areas concerning care and behavior.

There are many topics covered. One of the first main sections focuses on what a person should look for and know ahead of time before choosing a cat for adoption. It gives some tips on what to look for in a healthy cat, and how to care for a sick cat, as well as how to maintain a healthy lifestyle for your pet. This section is followed by advice on how to create the right environment for your cat: how you can help your cat "settle" into its new home, what to do if it does not adjust well, access to litter boxes, toys for cats, etc. This is followed by a section on how to care for cats home and away. If you happen to be leaving town for a time, there are some helpful bits of advice on how to make it less stressful on your feline friends. Explored in this section are such things on dangers to cats within the home and outside and ideas about access to the outside, such as how often you should let your cat out. There is also a section on nutrition and feeding, which goes over how much and what you should feed your cat based on its age or weight. Perhaps the biggest section is the one which goes over the many types of cats--these are broken into shorthair and longhair. There are many pictures of the various types, as well as information on their personalities and temperaments. The final section is about sickness and diseases, from minor to serious, and how to go about treating each one.

What I found most helpful about the book is the broad range of topics about cats. You can think of a common question about your cat, and it is probably answered in this book. There are tons of pictures of cats and their many predicaments included in the book, but this isn't just a "pretty" encyclopedia meant to grab you with its big, cute pictures. There is a ton of information for someone who has never had a cat, and information for someone who has grown up with cats all their life. The cat novice and the cat veteran will probably agree this is an excellent book! A must for any cat lover!

  2. a good start to introducing most of the cat breeds. many omitted. the book itself was a bit outdated, b
    ut still enjoyable.

  3. This beautiful reference book on cat care and the world's cat breeds makes a lovely coffee table book. It has over 700 photos of cats. It's printed on semi-glossy, flexible and thick paperstock.

The book is separated into two parts. Part One is "Caring for your Cat" and it starts with history of the cat. Then it goes on to many topics that any cat owner should be aware of. A few of the topics covered in part one are: Creating the right enviroment, selecting the right cat, care at home & away, nutrition & feeding, grooming, behavior, health and injuries & ailments of cats.

In part two, "The Breeds", there's a complete pictorial encyclopedia of all the main cat breeds. Each breed and the breed's many color combinations are fully described. It also has information on any important characteristics, such as temperment, grooming needs and average sizes. Non-pedigreed cats are also covered on a limited basis.

This full color, British authored book would make a great guidebook for any new cat owner. It would also make a lovely gift for a cat lover.

  4. I just love cats. If it weren't for this book I wouldn't of found any of our kittens' breeds. This lists down probably every breed of cat there is, except wild and extinct cats that is. I would say this is the best cat encyclopedia I've read. I would recomend this book to any cat breeder out there.
