1 comments about The Literary Cat: Miniature Edition (Miniature Editions).

  1. This tiny book, which measures little more than three inches square, is proof that good things come in small packages. THE LITERARY CAT collects quotes--deep, light, comic, wry, or just simply remarkable for observation--from both the widely celebrated to the somewhat obscure, all of them concerned with cats.

The sources include Mark Twain, Colette, Leonardo DaVinci, P.G. Wodehouse, Abraham Lincoln, Lewis Carroll, Thoreau, Sir Walter Scott, Swinburne, Christopher Smart among others, and their comments are occasionally interpsersed with line drawings of considerable charm. While it will take you only a few minutes to read through the book, it is the sort of tiny book that (like a cat) tends to linger on the desk, the table, the fireplace mantle to surprise you all over again whenever you discover it anew.

The book itself is extremely well constructed with a paper cover, durable hard binding, and meticulously stitched pages. Even if you're not a cat-fancier yourself, it would make a perfect "for no reason" gift to the feline fanatic in your life--especially if he or she is of a literary bent.

  1. Great book, simply written, easy to follow, wide scope covered in a small space.

  2. I have used Wolff's books - for the dogs as well as for the cats - for years (the German versions) and buy it now for all of my friends in English. It is very easy to use and has profound advice, teaching a lot of things necessary to keep your four-legged friends healthy with homeopathy and telling you where the limitations for home cures are.
    I love his books!

  1. I have to say I was very disappointed in this book. The whole layout design is cold and dull. The pictures and quotes are average as well as the printing quality. I have a lot of cat books and all kinds of them. This is one I would not recommend to others.

2 comments about All About My Cat.

  1. If you want to create something fun and quirky that you'll probably never look at again, but have a fun time doing, this is for you. It has fun little questions, like what president your cat would be if he was a president, if your cat likes comedy or horror movies etc.

If you're looking for a REAL keepsake, I recommend "my cat's journal" by aaron hunt. it was by far the best of the four books i bought, get that one.

  2. If you love your cat, you should buy this book, which asks just about every possible question about him/her. From "Does your cat like Fruit or Vegetables" (True or False) to "It hurts your cat's feelings when:" (check all that apply). It is very cute, and even after your cat is gone, you will have something to remember them by.

3 comments about The Cat Grooming Guide.

  1. I bought the book because I'm wanting to groom my own cats and there's nothing else specific on grooming cats. I don't agree with one reviewer's critique on the artwork, it's just as informative as photos, if not more so and if you appreciate art you'll enjoy the humor that the artist expresses. I think the book's information is very good, I'm sure my cats will not enjoy what I'm going to do to them though.

  2. I was extremely disappointed when I got this book, especially considering all the high marks from groomers it received. The drawings (no photo references) are generally pointless and unprofessional. The grooming information is weak and the handling info is basically non-existent. From the viewpoint of a cat lover/owner and cat rescue volunteer, the author should stick to dogs. Unfortunately, this appears to be the only cat grooming guide available at the moment. However, I suggest looking into some good cat behavior books (such as "The cat who cried for help" by Dr. Nicholas Dodman (he also wrote a wonderful book on canine behavior, "The dog who loved too much") or "PetSpeak: Share Your Pet's Secret Language" by the editors of Pets) to help with cat handling. Whether you're a pet owner or professional groomer, knowing how the cat is going to react is vital for your's and the cat's safety.

  3. Although I haven't extensively read this book, a copy was shown to me by a cat breeder. I looked up areas that I know are problems for cat owners. My business is grooming cats, and clients always ask the same questions; this book uses many of the techniques that I have used in 9 yrs of grooming cats. nice pictures, too!

5 comments about The Mediterranean Cat.

  1. All of Hans Silvester's photography books of cats, dogs & kittens in the Greek Cyclades Islands are lovely examples of fine photography. As a fine art photographer myself, I respect Mr. Silvester's level of skill and artistry, and I find his other books very beautiful.

However, when I first became aware of his books about cats and dogs, I was thoroughly dismayed by his choice of subject matter and the way he has chosen to portray the lives of these creatures as idyllic and carefree.

Having been to these Greek islands, I have learned firsthand that the large majority of these poor animals are ignored, injured, or mistreated by people there-anything but "respected." The photographer has omitted portraits of the true conditions for most of the stray dogs and cats in Greece-crippled, starving, dying of thirst, hurt or maimed, with the humans around them barely taking notice.

The full horror of the story was later revealed to me by locals on the islands. Each year, the cats & dogs are allowed to breed uncontrolled, because tourists are fond of seeing the cute animals around town and on the beaches. At the end of each tourist season, as many of them as possible are rounded up and killed (I couldn't bear to learn exactly how), until the following year when the ones that survived begin the cycle all over again. I found this same story on all the islands I visited, including Mykonos, and I was so appalled that I shortened by stay and left Greece altogether.

The situation is a tragedy, and my feeling as a photographer and animal lover, is that Mr. Silvester should not be misrepresenting the condition of the cats and dogs on these Greek islands, especially when it is for monetary gain. I hope animal lovers around the world will agree, and send a message to anyone who profits in any way from the suffering of these dogs and cats in the sun.

  2. You don't have to like cats to adore these creatures, although if you do, you will fall immediately in love. Hans Silvester is a master at his craft and this book showcases his artistry to the nth degree. The contrast of the neutral colored fur of the felines and the pastel washes of the building backdrops, tie together in a flash of eyecolor that makes for breathtaking images.

Silvester's use of lighting, color, camera angles - and obvious patience - illuminates the personalities of this secret society. The photographs make one feel like an anthropologist eavesdropping unseen on their world.

This volume will satisfy those who admire cats, art, photography, the Mediterranean, architecture; or those who simply like to escape to a new world for a time.

  3. I love the Mediterranean Cat. It continues this photographer's outstanding work already known from "Cats in the Sun". I have traveled to Greece many times and Silvester manages to show this country's eternal connection between the cats, the light, and the colors that I, too, have found so irresistable. Another reason I love Silvester's books is how he is able to avoid stereotype cat pictures. I love cats, but I hate how photographs usually show cats in "cute" situations. Silvester's cats are grown-up, independent, strong. Not much "cute" here, but a lot of respect, admiration and understanding for these beautiful animals. A tip: Also try "Cats in the Sun" - I find it even better than the Mediterranean Cat...

  4. Silvester is the ultimate cat photographer, combining almost breath-taking feline images with the mystique of the Greek isles. His mastery of color, texture, balance and line results in not only soul-satisfying photography but also great art.

After a year with his "Cats in the Sun" calendar, I'm looking for the year 2000 edition. Does it exist?

  5. Cat-lovers and photography buffs alike will love this elegant book. Hans Silvester truly captures the simple classical beauty of the Mediterranean and the essence of the cat spirit in his book. In candid format, Silvester's photographs capture the daily lives, at times harsh, at times idealic, of the ubiquitous cats of the Mediterranean. My copy will be prominantly displayed on my coffee table.

  1. The book arrived in very good condition despite being poorly packaged, and having been folded in half by the postman to fit in my mailbox. It barely made it to me by the end of the month. I'll beware of this dealer in the future.

  3. I recommend all of Hans Silvester's books of cat photography. You get lots of photos and relatively little text, so they are perfect for those of us who just want to look at interesting, artistic photos of cats. Plus you get a glimpse of life in the Greek islands, so you can pretend you are enriching your mind while you ooh and aah at the images of furry felines. And if you read the text, you actually will learn about the cats and the people who share the islands with them.

  4. Picked it up in the bookstore & couldn't put it down! What great pictures, I rushed home & ordered it from Amazon! : )

  5. If you love cats, you will love this book. This photo essay is a beautiful collection of kittens. Not only is it cute, but the photography is truly a work of art.

2 comments about If Your Cat Could Talk.

  1. This book answered many of my questions about cats. Why will a cat appear to enjoy being petted but then suddenly bite you? Why do cats catch mice when they always have food available and can't be hungry?

I've lived most of my life with cats, but this book taught me a lot about them I never knew. They're very different than dogs, and you can't expect them to act like a dog, or in a way you think is "reasonable."

The photos are wonderful, and are a good illustration of cat postures and expressions.

  2. This book has a lot of cute kitten pictures. The text, though sparse, goes into excruciating detail on the pregnancy cycle of a cat. Otherwise there is not much about a cat talking or what their body language says.
