3 comments about Two Cats and the Woman They Own: or Lessons I Learned from My Cats.

  1. Patty Davis has written a delightful, uplifting little book which acurately describes interacting on a daily basis with adopted and stray cats. I bought three copies for gifts!

  2. I loved this book...I keep it on my coffee table...it is a treasure. I could relate to every chapter and anyone who is a cat lover/owner...will love this book. I recommend very highly.

  3. I was curious about this book because I too was a woman who just didn't care for cats. At least I THOUGHT so. Then one came to stay at my house when my daughter couldn't have a pet at her apartment, and we were soon joined by another when my son begged for one. The two cats have been so entertaining and my level of tolerance and love has grown. I'm now a "cat lady!" I think we may even get more cats. That aside, Patti's book was written in a friendly and easy way... very enjoyable to read.

1 comments about Atlas of Canine and Feline Cytology.

  1. My first impression about this book was really not so good: small, not so sharp photomicrograpy made me not so happy.
The reading of this book is, on the other hand, much more interesting: many new things, the most recent references, accurate descriptions.
I really hated the chapter about cavitary effusion while I loved the chapter about CNF and CNS cytology.

3 comments about The Cat Grooming Guide.

  1. I bought the book because I'm wanting to groom my own cats and there's nothing else specific on grooming cats. I don't agree with one reviewer's critique on the artwork, it's just as informative as photos, if not more so and if you appreciate art you'll enjoy the humor that the artist expresses. I think the book's information is very good, I'm sure my cats will not enjoy what I'm going to do to them though.

  2. I was extremely disappointed when I got this book, especially considering all the high marks from groomers it received. The drawings (no photo references) are generally pointless and unprofessional. The grooming information is weak and the handling info is basically non-existent. From the viewpoint of a cat lover/owner and cat rescue volunteer, the author should stick to dogs. Unfortunately, this appears to be the only cat grooming guide available at the moment. However, I suggest looking into some good cat behavior books (such as "The cat who cried for help" by Dr. Nicholas Dodman (he also wrote a wonderful book on canine behavior, "The dog who loved too much") or "PetSpeak: Share Your Pet's Secret Language" by the editors of Pets) to help with cat handling. Whether you're a pet owner or professional groomer, knowing how the cat is going to react is vital for your's and the cat's safety.

  3. Although I haven't extensively read this book, a copy was shown to me by a cat breeder. I looked up areas that I know are problems for cat owners. My business is grooming cats, and clients always ask the same questions; this book uses many of the techniques that I have used in 9 yrs of grooming cats. nice pictures, too!

5 comments about Natural Pet Cures: Dog & Cat Care the Natural Way.

  1. This book is one of 4 books that I have on natural pet care. I refer to it along with all the others every time I need guidance. I have found it useful for some health issues, and will continue to reference it in the future. I always cross-reference the advice against my other books, then make a decision based on my own gut instinct as to what's best for my animals.

  2. Although I have yet to actually read the book. (I'm buying it today) I must disagree with all of you who were against the idea that animals should not be spayed and neutered. The owners, not the animals are responsible for the countless animals being murdered at shelters. I would 'fix' myself before I'd do such a cruel thing to my dog. Have you ever fixed an animal yourself? My family raises show goats and bands the young males when they're old enough. To watch the physical and emotional trauma these poor kids go through is enough to break your heart a million times over.
Also, my mother insisted two of our cats were spayed. The emotional trauma there was also heartbreaking. No reaction? These cats dispised my mother for weeks for putting them through such a terrible thing.
If animals were meant to be neutered or spayed, they'd be born that way.
Perhaps all animals shouldn't have children, but removing parts of their body because their owners aren't responsible enough to look after their pets is never going to be alright. Especially as far as the animals are concerned.

  3. I bought this book to use for a college course even though the reviews were poor. I found this book to be helpful. It had some different alternatives to the usual holistic and natural cures. Give this book a try.

  4. Like the writer from Memphis, I too bought this book in good faith. I had to re-read the author's comments on spaying and neutering a thousand times I was so dumbfounded. "Spaying and neutering deprives a dog from the joys of parenthood"? Are you kidding me? It is absolutely that kind of thinking that leads to the millions of homeless animals that have to be euthanized. My advice to the author, spend a few weeks volunteering at a shelter (I have volunteered at one for 3 years) Witness shelters that are bursting at the seams because of his logic. Maybe then the author would realize that the "joys of parenthood" mean nothing when faced with the realities of euthanasia

  5. I bought this book in good faith that it would help me with three rotty puppies I rescued. One got sick with parvo so I started the treatment on the hour with the formula described in this book. I even started the well puppies on the formula on the hour.My puppies are so sick at this point,4 days later that I am putting 2 down today because they are to weak to throw up.I wish I could sue.My heart is breaking.

2 comments about The Cat & Dog Lovers' Idea Book.

  1. On the plus side, Gail Green has some EXCELLENT, novel, and varied-difficulty projects in this book, but I find the "tips on how to find, feed & train your pet" to be excessive and intrusive for such a small book. Some of the tips fit with the subject matter and work better, such as scratching, along with making scratching boards, or photography tips with projects that use photos. Some of the information, like breeds, ages, behavior, and finding a pet just seems to need another book, but I 'm happy to say that I haven't noticed any faults within the information itself.

  2. I just received this book today and I am very pleased with it! It has alot of different ideas for dog & cat items! It is well written and the instructions are all easy to read. Alot of the items here can be expanded to fit your own creativity. I highly recommend this book.

2 comments about The Welfare of Cats (Animal Welfare).

  1. The Welfare of Cats is a comprehensive manual of cat welfare issues from international feline practioners and researchers. Some of the nutritional information, while much more appropriate than previous nutritional assumptions for cats, has been outdated by recent developments in that area. The Disease & Welfare portion could have included more information about non-infectious chronic illnesses (such as diabetes and chronic renal disease), but does contain a wealth of information on the recognition and containment of several infectious diseases and stresses that ill or diseases cats can and are being treated very sucessfully, maintaining a good quality of life, for illnesses and diseases that have previously been considered terminal and/or fatal. This book has excellent information regarding appropriate environmental standards and enrichment opportunities for (indoor and outdoor) house cats, feral cats, and cats housed in shelters and sanctuaries. There are large sections illustrating cat behavior and common "behavioral problems", especially those encountered in a domesticated cat or multi-cat households.

I highly recommend this resource to any cat parent who wants to provide the best care and environment for their cat companions. In my opinion, this book should be mandatory reading material for all professional cat practitioners - be they veteranarians, breeders, boarders, researchers, rescuers, fosters, or sitters. Definitely a solid base in any cat library.

  2. I found this book to be one of the few resources I have come across using a good combination of pleasant and well-written chapters with the scientific research to back them up. The author of each chapter provides an APA style reference list of the journal articles or books cited in that chapter. I'm truly compassionate about felines and issues concerning their welfare; but I am also a scientist and wish to pursue my goal to improve the welfare of felines grounded in peer-reviewed research rather than anthropomorphic ideals and folk wisdom. People enjoying this book may also like Turner & Bateson's "The Domestic Cat: The biology of its behaviour".

1 comments about Cruising With Your Four-Footed Friends: The Basics of Travel with Your Cat or Dog.

  1. This book is a rare resource for those wanting to know more about the concerns and rewards of having a pet aboard. I found the information contained in this book very useful, especially the hints about port entry requirements for those with a pet. Anyone considering life on the water with their furry friends will appreciate this as a solid reference book.
