2 comments about Fat Cats.

  1. As the proud owner of two fat cats, I enjoyed this book. I thought my 20-lb cats were fat until I saw some of the critters featured here. If you are a cat person, you'll like this collection of incredibly fat and funny felines.

  2. The book "Fat Cats" by J.C. Suares, is a great book for anyone that has a cat, loves cats, or has friends or family that appreciate this truly unique creature. This book isn't a story but more of a pictorial essay of cats that are, well FAT. They are some really cute pictures in the books of people who love cats that are "weight challenged". The most amazing picture is that of a cat that weighed 43 pounds!!! All the pictures in the book are black and white photos and this book makes a great gift. I leave the book on the coffee table and always have guests picking it up to look at these incredibly beatutiful cats!

1 comments about Bella and Me: Life in the Service of a Cat.

  1. Cute story on an adorable cat. Having just adopted a Bella of my own I could relate to the antics in the story. Only complaint...it is far too short. Having waited 4 months for delivery to Australia I would have liked more than a 15 minute read. Hope there is a Bella Part 2.

1 comments about Longhaired Cats: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual.

  1. The longhaired "Felis domesticus," or house cat, is a wonderful animal companion. This little book written by a top breeder of longhairs (and who is married to a veterinarian) is enormously useful for people new to longhaired cats. I generally agree with the author on most issues (although I think more behavior is breed-linked than she does), and find this book most useful in the pre-cat ownership stage. She has an excellent section on considerations necessary before adopting a new cat.

Her advice and information is presented in an easy to understand manner, but most of this will be known by experienced cat owners already. People who have never owned a cat before (and particularly those considering a Persian or other longhaired cat) should definitely read this book. If you have had cats for a while, there is probably little new information to be learned here, although many of the illustrations are nice. One key to take away from this book is that while longhairs may look more glamorous than shorthair cats, the upkeep on a longhaired cat is significantly greater, particularly in the grooming department. Having said that, I think they are totally worth the extra effort.

She discusses longhairs and breeds (I am partial to neutered male Persians and Maine Coons myself), but emphasizes that all cats are individuals with unique personalities. I agree with her, but want to add my own comment on top of hers: if you want a pet, you will gain nothing by having a pedigreed cat (in fact they may be less healthy because of greater inbreeding, though not necessarily). Having said that, please consider rescuing a cat from your local shelter. If you want to show or breed the cat, she gives some basic information on this as well.

Cats make wonderful companions, and I highly recommend this book for those interested in getting their first cat, while more experienced cat owners can probably safely skip it, although it still makes a nice reference.

2 comments about The American Animal Hospital Association Encyclopedia of Cat Health and Care.

  1. I checked this out from the library and it's too bad it's not still in print. This book starts from the basics and covers everything. My cat is expecting kittens and I'm very nervous about this whole thing. The book told me just what I needed to know about how to care for her and the kittens. It has cat first aid, a symptom chart for when your cat is sick, and tips on choosing a cat. It has it all. A great book for the cat owner, and a great gift for a friend.

  2. I have owned many cats, and I reccommend this book. The book is easy to read and has a at-a-glance guide to signs and symptoms. It also gives you information about what to do in an emergancy, tips on posion control, first aid, and it also explains cat behaviors. This is definitely the best book for cat owners.

2 comments about Making The Cat Laugh.

  1. I smiled occasionally, but was rather disappointed. I found the title misleading as it didn't seem to have much to do with cats.

  2. I got this book because I LOVED "Talk to the Hand". That book was so on point that I was stunned. It was substantially better than "Eats Shoots and Leaves". This is an earlier work than either of the above, and Ms. Truss had not yet reached her stride in her writing. But I related alot to her reasoning about many things. So, if you want a book like "Talk...", this is not your book. But if you are just interested in a retro view of Ms. Truss's style, this IS your book.
