5 comments about The Nine Emotional Lives of Cats: A Journey Into the Feline Heart.

  1. Excellent story of the author's life with his cats in New Zealand, and how they accompany him for long walks. Even urban cats like to travel and walk - my city cats love to walk for miles with me, no, not on a leash. Many of the reviewers are quite unfair, just because they don't let their cats out - indoor cats are common in America and many shelters for instance only rehome them on signing a contract that they will not be allowed outside - does not mean their policy is justified. Cats need access to outside and the warm earth, just as we all do, and this wonderful book shows what's possible.

  2. I am a cat lover, but unlike the author I believe in keeping our cats inside because of the environment we live in (highly trafficked area)If we lived on a beach in New Zealand as the author does, I'd certainly reconsider. Having said that, I really feel that this book gives a wonderful insight into the temperament, personality and attitude of cats. Each cat is unique and the author portrays his feline friends as the individuals they are while still maintaining a realistic narrative on how to live with small children in a family environment with cats. The author is not feline-centric, he obviously loves dogs and humans and his environment as much as he loves his cats so it's a very balanced view of raising and living with cats.
I loved this book and would highly recommend it.

  3. As a cat lover, with 12 indoor only cats I was excited to read this book. Unfortunately, I ended up irate that this man thinks he knows cats well enough to write about them. He seems to have only lived with them a year and even gave one of his five away at one point. When I take an animal in, it us mine for the lifetime of the animal regardless of behavior or any other problem. I also believe as most intelligent people do that cats should be kept indoors only. Yes, they may get a little bored, but it is the owner's job to find new ways to stimulate them. A beach in New Zealand may be fairly safe for cats, but you never know when they could get into poison or near an animal abuser. If you want to know about the emotional lives of cats just watch and enjoy them.

  4. I've tried to read this book twice and couldn't even get halfway through it each time.

Like someone else mentioned, not everyone has the luxury of living on remote sandy beaches in a foreign country. The way his cats act does not represent the behavior of the majority of the population of cats. And where does this guy get his authority to write a book regarding the emotions of cats? Just because he wrote one about dogs?

Being a licensed veterinary technician working at a feline-only practice, I found this book to be very ignorant of the mind of the cat. It was hard for me to even find a single statement in the portions of the book that I actually read, that applied to more than just his five cats.

Don't waste your money. You will have no better knowledge about the emotions of cats by reading this book.

  5. "The Nine Emotional Lives of Cats," in my opinion is very good. It's interesting. I wish it had gone a little more into emotions and what different ways a cat communicates and what things mean. But overall it was really good. It's nice to see a man who loves cats. I also enjoyed hearing the stories about he and his families cats in New Zeland. I learned a good deal about cats from these books. I have two cats and love them dearly and this book has helped me learn a little more about them. Really good job and a good book for cat lovers.

2 comments about Cats in Their Gardens.

  1. Page Dickey has compiled a series of visits to gardens of various types and climes and demonstrates in this lovely little gentle book that not only does she know her horticulture, but also she has a fine photographer's eye for the quirky personalities of cats. In a matter a few pages, Dickey acquaints us with the 'owner cats' of the various gardens and has captured whimsical and languorous moments in the lives of these felines blessed with gardens of great beauty. Each garden (and cat!) visit is accompanied by editorial comments that range form humorous to informative to a bit cute. This is one of those 'perfect gift' ideas for you and for friends who love their gardens and the feline guardians of the property. The fact that this book is available in the best gardening stores speaks highly for Dickey's reputation among horticulturists! A fine gift idea for the holidays. Grady Harp, November 2004

  2. Some of the most picturesque gardens in the U.S. and abroad are the settings for these great cat photographs. Felines have a way of knowing which backgrounds will best set off their charm so these candid pictures are wonderful. Short essays about each setting and the cats who patrol are just right. I have a fair sized collection of cat books but the pictures and text in this little volume are better than any on my shelf. This will be my gift book of choice for the cat lovers among my friends. By the way--Amazon, please note--the author's name is Page Dickey, given name Page.

5 comments about Breeding Pedigreed Cats.

  1. I bought this book because I am considering breeding cats a later point and I wanted to find out a little bit of what it involves. This book was really great at going through the basics and details of showing, breeding and running a cattery. And, not only that, but it's actually enjoyable to read. I highly recommend this book.

  2. This is a wonderful book...a must have!

Re: "What do you love": There is nothing wrong with breeding beautiful purebred cats or dogs... If people raised and loved each OTHER right there would be no need for shelters. If children are taught from a young age to love and respect each other then compassion for ALL living things will naturally follow. I believe good, honest breeders are the perfect example of that! They take on great responsibility with endless love, devotion and compassion.

  3. This is a well done book. A new version with color photos would be a bit more helpful, but for someone considering breeding it's a must, and even for a more seasoned breeder it's a good brush up. I take it out every time I have a litter. As an aside, the between chapter "cat/people" jokes make it an ejoyable read. Some of the references are a little outdated, but the material is not; some things don't change that much. Breeding cats is one of those, highly recommend.

  4. There is a reason that people are willing to pay $150+ for the collectible book that is out of print. Luckily my fiance and I won it at a local cat show that had a raffle. We had no idea it was worth so much at the time, but devoured it and thought it was excellent.

This book is nearly a complete resource for all breeders, if I could choose only one cat book to keep this would be the one.

It is well written, thought-out, and VERY informative. Any question you have about breeding is answered here. It is simply the best cat breeding book I have ever read.

  5. I have been breeding pedigreed cats for 22 years. This is the best book on the subject I have ever read. I wish I had this book when I began. A MUST for cat breeders.

  4. This was a very funny book as are all the rest of the Garfield books. I like all of the characters. Jim Davis is the greatest cartoonist of all time! Congragulations Garfield Rules reviewer on writing all of those good reviews.

1 comments about The Big Book of Cats (Big Book of . . . (Welcome Books)).

  1. I am a cat lover, but also love vintage photography. This book combines them both in a beautiful way. There are some newer photos too, and they are all in B/W. I keep this book on my coffee table, and I flip through it all the time- it is timeless. I think it would be a wonderful gift for any cat lover or a fan of photography.
