5 comments about The Cat Who'll Live Forever: The Final Adventures of Norton, the Perfect Cat, and His Imperfect Human.

  1. I love Scottish Fold Cats and of course had to read the adventures of Norton, a very intelligent cat! I anxiously awaited the final book about Norton's last days. Very touching but of course sad. Mr. Gethers is quite a nice author as I wrote to him and got a personal reply back. (As my Scottish Fold looks like Norton, I even sent Mr. Gethers a photo my my cat.)

  2. The book itself is in excellent physical edition; only the end pages with library info have been removed.
I was overcome by the depth and intensity of the love shown for Norton by his friend Peter. Heartbreaking--but also heartwarming to read of such a strong bond between man and cat. Not sure if I could be so attentive to my adopted 14-year old cat if she were to encounter severe medical problems. Hats off and hugs to you, Peter.

  3. A Hallmark card disguised as a book. If you like your cliches syrupy, I guess you might like this drivel.

  4. I was given the first two Norton books as a gift. A Cat in Paris, and A Cat Abroad. What I discovered is the magic of Peter Gethers. My friends, these are more than just "cat books". Peter Gethers is an a gifted writer who writes about his interesting life, and the adventures Norton has with him. This book is the final Chapter of Norton stories. It's a heart-wrenching story of the final adventures of the friends we've known to love, whether abroad or home. Our rough around the edges Peter has no boundaries when it comes to sweet Norton. One thing that has always stuck with me is Gethers, a grown man, who would move over in bed so as not to disturb Norton sleeping on his pillow. It's painful to read, especially if you've read the others. But, Gethers brings us to Norton's end in peace. It's a great book for an animal lover, but Gether's adventures make this book a fit for anyone.

  5. I think this book is just marvelous. I really enjoyed the previous 2 Norton books, but I think this one is the best of the 3.
The book tells of the great love a person can have for an animal. Your heart breaks along with Mr Gethers as Norton grows old and frail. You hope for a miracle, and you will be touched by the bravery of little Norton.
I confess to being teary-eyed by the end, and I felt the need to give my cat a big hug.

5 comments about Everything Here Is Mine.

  1. great book just to have around to make you laugh on a day when nothing seems funny--if you don't laugh at this, then nothing will ever cheer you up again.

  2. Those of us who love our kitties to an almost "nutty" degree will appreciate the territorial cats depicted here!
Another book with humorous cats worth having is Henry Beard's "French For Cats: All the French Your Cat Will Ever Need."

  3. If you're a cat owner, or should I say if you are owned by a cat... :) This book is for you. I think only cat people will understand the humour in this book. It's a really short read but you'll probably find yourself nodding your head in agreement many, many times.
How often have you tried to read the newspaper or eat dinner in peace only to have kitty stalking you. You know what I mean. This book tells it from the cat's point of view. They try to tell you that they are so hard done by... as if. Read the book and you'll know what I mean.

  4. I love giving this little book to new cat owners, especially ones who are first-time cat folk. Nicole Hollander's "Sylvia" cartoons have long been favorites of mine, and she turns her attention and talent to astutely describing life with our furry purry friends.

Her cartoons are hilarious -- just the right combination of "in your face" humor and subtlety -- and the text consisting of essays and "quizzes" is wonderfully funny. Anyone who has ever lived with a cat will see something they recognize: the finicky eater, strange cat habits in the bathroom, cats and vets, what cats do while we're away at work. There's even a "Dear Abby"-like column running throughout the book, offering "helpful" advice to "reader" questions.

Yes, Nicole Hollander has nailed the feline mystique cold. You'll love it.

  5. One of the best funny little books I've seen in a long time. Cat keepers will love it and cat lovers will see snippets of their own furry babies in these pages. This creator of "Sylvia" must sometimes sneak into my house and spy on my cats. I read this one often, and it always makes me laugh. All my cat keeping friends got this for Christmas. This one is a keeper.

5 comments about Cat Magic: Mews, Myths, and Mystery.

  1. This is another great book for the cat lover, it's has cat myth, history from all over the world, with lot's of great art pictures and just good old cat information, it's a fun book!

  2. It is a little, nice book about the lovely creatures. It is easy to read, but nothing to do with real magic. The title of the book is more or less commercial.

  3. I couldn't wait to get this book in the mail. It sounded like a great book, and I read it the night I got it. I enjoyed the stories of cats, and the astrological part on cats. I found that there wasn't enough material to practically apply in today's age with one's own cat. The histories presented did not flow, they jumped around in era and subject, sometimes feeling like the same ground was being covered twice. Although I enjoyed the astrology part, it was rather trite. The most frustrating part of the book is the lack of information on the pictures featured. There are some truly fascinating, fabulous pictures in this book, most lacking any explanation or reference. I found that to be very distracting and a big let down. I hope for a revision in the future, as a book like this, done properly, is needed.

  4. I just bought this book, and haven't read all the way through it
yet,but I'm still giving it 5 stars because there is a lot of
great info and mythology on cats. And the pictures are really great too.If someone is looking for aa book to buy for a cat lover, this is one book that is totally worth the money.

  5. This book will make a great gift for any cat lover, whether Pagan or not. The book is filled with fun folklore and history about cats. There are legends and beliefs from all over the world! These include cats roles in spirituality, superstitions, gypsies, dreams, symbols, and even a little section on the astrology of your cat. There is also brief information on cat care. The layout of the book is GORGEOUS with photographs or illustrations on every page. The book is made of high quality paper as well! This book is as gorgeous as it is informative and entertaining and I give it an enthusiastic 5 stars! A must have for cat mommies!

  1. These drawings seem to move by themselves within the printed page. This artist truly portrays a cat in all serenity, playfulness, strength, and agility. These drawings are so life-like I could almost feel the warmth of life in each animal drawing. A great gift for any kitty lover.

  2. Many wonderfull drawing of cats. Mostly gesture type, but beautiful studies.

  3. The drawings in this book all include cats in different positions. Sleeping, eating, and playing. They are beautiful and simple drawings of cats. Great book for the cat lover.

3 comments about Guide to Owning a Burmese Cat (Guide to Owning).

  1. I must agree with the other reviewer that this book offers no additional eye-opening facts in respect to owning a Burmese cat... The history section is specific to the breed (but as a new or existing Burmese owner, you'd probably already know this prior to getting one!) & there is one blurb regarding the Burmese characteristic to yowl when they require attention. Beyond that this book could really be for any other cat out there (feed your cat, give it water, groom it,...). It didn't even specify normal size/weight ranges for the breed and what quantities of food to give them as a guideline. So, in my opinion, useless to a new Burmese owner. Also, I was a bit disappointed that all of the photos are only of Sable & Chocolate Burmese (they are all gorgeous, but a few photos of Blues or Lilacs would be appreciated). All in all this book was disappointing.

  2. Although books about particular cats/pets are rare and appreciated, I'm afraid this book gave me no further insight into my Burmese cat. Perhaps I am asking too much but I expected to find a plethora of special insights into this special breed. I didn't.
Especially in modern cat care I felt this book lacking. My breeders says: Fresh meat three times a week; chicken wings (raw) at least twice for dental hygiene, vary the diet, enjoy the peculiarly dog like characteristics of the Burmese. But mabe that's all asking too much - gotta go, Nero is bringing his beloved yellow wash cloth for retrieval...
It is hard to criticise a book that describes the best breed of cat on earth. Let's all write one!

  3. I liked how there was an equal mixture of the traditional, contemporary, and moderate styles without editorializing. Clear, concise, and good pictures!

5 comments about Legacy of the Cat.

  1. The book is filled with so many colorful photographs and is so descriptive. It helped my daughter identify what kind of cat her grandma owns. Wonderful book!!

  2. I have always been a big fan of "mutt" cats (although I have some mutts and some purebreds) but seeing these pictures and reading the personality traits makes me see the interest in purebred cats and a bit into the mind of the "fancier".

I think the photography sells this book. I'm surprised to read another reviewer call them "dreadful reproductions" when I find the work of Tetsu Yamazaki amazing. I bought this book because the pictures of the sphynx cats was so understanding of them and made them look so appealing and cuddly- I just wanted to own those pictures. Sphynx are often called "hairless" and the author makes clear that they are not hairless but are downy, and acknowledges that many people fail to see their charm on first meeting.

this is more of a reference or browsing type book so I haven't read it in it's entirety, but the writing is clear and informative. the illustrations are helpful and the charting of color and pattern reference is easy to follow. I'm not sure who needs this book but it's certainly a lot of fun to have.

  3. Although I think that some of the genetics stuff was edited between editions (cover photos changed), the type was certainly reset.

Beware....the pictures have been used in a bunch of other books--dreadful reproductions which made me wonder if they had just been scanned and stolen.

In this, the real book, the pictures are wonderful, good quality, lots of character and life even if they were taken on white seamless paper. One of the really nice things about them is that not all the cats pictured are super-young, there are a few five-year-olds among them.

One of the few things I've seen that made me want to have purebred cats.

  4. "Legacy of the Cat" is a must for each and every cat fancier. Not only do the photographs portray the breeds accurately, the writing by Gloria Stephens explains, enlightens, inspires, and furthers knowledge of the different breeds.

  5. Okay, let me admit up front that I am much more a dog-person than a cat-person. Even so, this book is a real treat for anyone who is even mildly interested in the feline world. The photographs are presented on white backgrounds, and while this approach sometimes creates a "stiff" appearance, that is NOT true in this case. Photographer Tetsu Yamazaki captures cats in all their focused alertness, grace, playfulness, and dare I say... beauty. A photo of a silver Egyptian Mau, crouched and demonstrating that not a single muscle is without purpose, typifies the excellent presentation work in this book.

The organization of the book is clear, with an introductory section that depicts, with a photographic chart, how the different breeds are organized. Descriptions often present some historical facts about breeds that are of real interest.

If you are a cat lover, you will most likely fall "in love" with this book. If you do not fancy cats as pets, and indeed never wish to own one, you may very well still find this book to be fascinating. You may tell yourself that, thank goodness, these "cats" never jump on tables or knock things off shelves... or do they?

5 comments about Cat Page-A-Day Gallery Calendar 2008.

  1. I've been a fan of the Cat Page-a-Day Calender for years now. It makes every morning worth waking up for! Even my own cat approves.

  2. This collection of photos is beautiful and inspiring. I have it on my desk at work and get many compliments on the quality of the pictures. I love the quotes and sayings as well. If you love cats you will love this calendar!

  3. We buy this calendar every year to give as Christmas presents for our cat-loving friends and family. We don't have to buy our own because my sister always give us one. We look forward to "Cat of the Day Time" when we turn to the new page. The photos are terrific.

  4. This is a beautifully-made and beautifully-photographed calendar. I had the 2007 version and tried for some time to find a vendor who carried the 2008 version. It is cleverly constructed to show the first 6 months on one side of the pages and the other 6 months by flipping the pages over and putting them back in the plexiglass frame. I was very glad that Amazon carried the item, and at more than $5.00 off the retail suggested price. I hope they carry the future versions as well.

  5. Love this calendar. I get one for my desk in my classroom every year.

2 comments about Chicken Soup for the Soul: Celebrates Dogs and the people who love them (Canfield, Jack).

  1. There were a few enjoyable stories but it is definitely not worth buying. It seems like the authors didn't have enough material for a book but wrote one anyway. I was done with it in an hour.

  2. I have bought the other chicken soup for animal lovers in this series and was very pleased with them, this one is another matter. The book is small, only a very few stories and I read the whole thing in about an hour. For anyone looking for a good animal book pass this one by.
