5 comments about The Craggy Hole in My Heart and the Cat Who Fixed It: Over the Edge and Back with My Dad, My Cat, and Me.

  1. This book reads quickly and is so enjoyable. I recommended it to many friends and family and also bought it for some friends.

  2. This book drove me crazy. It seems to me like she's doing some self therapy and taking us along for the ride. I could have done with just the story and less analysis. She really beats herself up. both her dad and her cat lived long full lives. How can she dwell on how to bring them back and ignore her blessings with the time she had with them. Ahh too much.

  3. I read Geneen's first book in the early 80s and realized dieting was not the way to go. I worked with her guidelines but still didn't realize how food was an actual doorway into myself. I read Women, Food and God and "GOT IT". I immediately went to Amazon and purchased Craggy, Refrigerator and When Food is Love and binged on them! Watch out because they will open up parts of yourself that you are not looking at but that run you and your day without you even realizing it.
The first time I stopped myself as I noticed my stomach was satisfied, I felt the resistance and suddenly all these thoughts came up instead...finish your food, stop playing with your food, don't you know there are hungry children out there, you will not leave the table until you clean your plate...WOW, all this going on just below my conscious level because I would stay one step ahead by cleaning my plate no matter what the present stomach was reporting.
geneen deals with the underlying issues that led to overeating. Just amazing. THIS IS IT! Once I know what drives me to overeat, I no longer have to do it on an unconscious level. I recommend this book to those of us who have worn out the dieting mentality.

  4. I read this book mostly because Geneen Roth wrote it and I'm currently on a Geneen kick. The first half of the book, I easily read a few pages before sleep. I'm entertained and engaged. I appreciate how willing and courageous Geneen is to expose what could be judged. I don't judge. I laugh, I get surprised and I like being able to read "light" in snippets.

One quiet afternoon, while I long to escape from my own world of "shoulds", I take this book to bed. I begin at Chapter 6 and read straight through to the end. My heart muscle stretches and tears, my mind opens alert to revelations she shares, and I pretty much cry for the next 100 pages recognizing my own grief, my own parents and the frames I held them in, my own stuff and my own opportunity to grow another inch. Thank you, Geneen. And thank you for the words of Blanche at the end...and the fabulous photo. More than anything, your words kindly showed me my own LOVE.

  5. This book touched the hearts of anyone who has been close to an animal as a pet and more, part of the family in their lives.

Some of her dependency got to be a bit much at times, but still a good read.

  1. Hilarious! Great for cat lovers! This witty book is not only great for a laugh, but it also contains pretty smart career/interview advice that is a perfect break for people struggling in this current job market. Sit back and enjoy this satirical response to the failing economy.

5 comments about Starting from Scratch: How to Correct Behavior Problems in Your Adult Cat.

  1. This book explained troubling feline behavior and offered solutions that work. Give this a try before giving up on your cat!

  2. Covers lots of behavior problems in adult cats. This book is helping me understand underlying problems in my cats, and how to correct them. So far its been helping tremendously.

  3. This book provides great suggestion for helping correct feline mis-behaving. In this book I finally found new, solid methods that work. All of my feline-loving friends have been borrowing this book to help re-train their furry family members. I highly recommend it!!

  4. If you are looking for a quick and easy fix to feline behavior problems, then this book is not for you. And frankly, you need to rethink your strategy and look at long term. There are no easy fixes to hard problems.

I have a formerly feral young cat with some behavior problems--mix that with a foster cat who chases her and you get some big ugly. I have read almost half this book over the past few days, have started some of the techniques she recommends, and I have already seen a difference.

We still have a way to go, but this evening has been more peaceful than the last two weeks combined. The cats are even napping in the same room, although of course not together. I can easily distract and redirect the aggressive cat's (the foster) stalking behavior, and my cat is already more relaxed and showing much less fear aggression.

I have been a cat person my whole life and consider myself pretty fluent in cat. There is still so much this book has taught me. The main thing being that you have to throw out your personal conception of what YOU believe is going on and really listen to and look at the cat and let her tell you. (the book helps you interpret cues) I never thought my cat would be fear aggressive as she appears (to me) to be fearless. But I now clearly see a lot of her problems come from anxiety and being uncertain, which = fear to a cat.

I have also identified behaviors which are affectionate and indicate deep trust on the part of my cat, and it's very touching to know she DOES trust me and loves me.

I have gone from being committed to hanging in there until things change to being extremely confident not just that they WILL change, but confident on HOW they will change and what I can do to get there. I have a plan, and now all I need is time and consistency.

I cannot say how highly I recommend this book, even to a life long cat person.

  5. This book is fantastic.

I took life-with-a-kitty for granted for a numbers of years until I recently adopted a stray kitten who is perfect in every way except for his nasty biting habit. After weeks of frustration, I finally decided I needed to find some advice about cat behavior. Originally, I picked up this book for its section on aggression but after the first few chapters I was hooked. The format of the book is wonderful, the information she presents about cats and their natural behaviors is astounding, and the suggestions she makes throughout the book are more than helpful. In just a few weeks, my relationship with my cat has improved tremendously. In addition to the behavior modifications I was able to do with the cat thanks to her advice, I have also learned so much about how to keep my cat happy, active, and stimulated. I never knew it was so easy! And it makes both the cat and I extremely happy.

The author believes the best way to modify your cats behavior is through positive reinforcement techniques. I have found this method to be extremely effective. However, modifying your cats behavior through positive reinforcement takes time, patience, and presence on your part. If you are not willing to be an active member in your cat's life, then you will get nowhere fast with this book. If you are willing to be attentive and active, then the rewards will be worth the effort ten times over again.

5 comments about Cat Training in 10 Minutes.

  1. The description of the book said that it was worn, but I think it should have been a little more specific. The book was in horrible condition. Most of the pages were stuck together with something sticky (I don't want to know what), and most of the book was discolored by something (again, I'd rather not know what). I only paid $2 for it, so I really can't complain, but the description of the condition of the book was misleading. The book itself was useful and had lots of good info in it. I would recommend the book to anyone with cats.

  2. This little book has done nothing less than changed our desperate dwelling back to the happy home it once was before we took in two 10 month old tuxedo terrors. Our once expensive furniture was turned to shredded tatters, the cupboards permanently duct taped shut to protect valued collector's pieces, and our beautiful drapes hanging like ragged trash in front of the limp remains of window screens. In a few weeks our house was defiled and vandalized beyond anything one could ever imagine outside a revolution ravaged village in the last days of Tsarist Russia. We dreamed of driving our new family members into the early morning darkness and dropping them in the night deposit box of the SPCA, steeled to the cries as we drove quickly away. But we felt we had made a commitment and were determined to suffer our fate. Thanks to this book, we have been saved and our cats have become loved, angelic babies who adore us. The affection is overwhelming and it is mutually shared. This book has worked its magic and through the techniques described we have become one big deliriously happy family. Our deepest thanks to the author for not only giving us our lives back, but for enhancing them beyond comprehension.

  3. I had read one of Karen Pryor's clicker training books but was trying to train a cat and she provided lots of good generic clicker training guidance, but I needed something more specific to a cat. I read lots of reviews before ordering this book and most people were satisfied-it got better reviews than Karen Pryor's cat training book so I went ahead and got it. In the end I had better luck just applying Karen Pryor's theories to training my cat as this book doesn't provide much specific clear step by step instruction and the techniques it did provide weren't very useful. If I could get half my money back in exchange for the book, I would take it. Recommend reading Karen Pryor's books-they're a lot more in-depth, scientific and interesting. You will learn a lot more about what makes your pet do the things it does and how to control it's behaviors-to some degree-you know a cat is still a cat no matter how much training you provide or kitty cookies you bribe it with!

  4. The book has great tips about cat training, I tried to train them but with seven cats at home is a little hard.

  5. I have been clicker training my cat and this book gave me insights on how to get behaviors I was unable to get with other books by showing me hand positions and other tips and tricks on how to achieve what I wanted. Don't think you can't train a cat. They get addicted! My kitten found the clicker the other day and went nuts just to OWN it to tear around the house, but in the end, he wound up putting it at my feet. When I didn't respond, he jumped up and put it on my lap. Cats want something to accomplish and, since we discourage them from hunting, learning behaviors is a positive outlet for what we DON'T want them to practice. Just one behavior, the first: TARGET you can teach immediately, and you will be able to put your cat where-ever you need. This alone could save a life.

It's so much easier than you can imagine...and rewarding. Your cat will actually understand what you want....and since my cat doesn't speak English, this form of communication actually elicits a bond he displays with affection after he gets over the fact that we're done with that lesson. He can go longer than me. He sulks when I put the clicker away, and then I get unsolicited kisses.

If you are even CONSIDERING clicker training, you should own this book. It makes the lesson plan very straight-forward, easy to achieve and you can go at your own pace. The great thing about clickers are that you teach when you want. You don't have to have a rigid schedule to achieve your goals. Go at your own pace, build on each session as you build your relationship, and most of all, have fun!

5 comments about Your Cat: Simple New Secrets to a Longer, Stronger Life.

  1. This book was very educational and will help us to insure that our Lizzie lives a very long, healthy, happy life.

  2. Dr. Hodgkins writes in plain, easy to understand language that helps the reader understand quickly. It gave me a whole new perspective on caring for my fur-babies.

Unfortunately, her corresponding website is less than supportive if you have trouble transitioning a cat into wet food. My repeated requests for help with the transition were put on "hold" and not allowed to be seen by other members, lest they think dry food was "exceptable [sic]." When I protested, I was called "ignorant."

Read the book, it's awesome and informative. Stay off the web site because you don't need that stress if you have a sick kitty.

  3. Definitely recommend this to all cat parents....read it to find out what's best for your cat(s). I kept borrowing it from the library over and over; finally, I broke down and just bought it so I can always refer to it. It also shows you which website(s) to go to, to get good and helpful information.

Just wish it had some real pictures of cats vs. drawings.

  4. This book was an absolute delight to read. I have had cats as pets for about 40 years and this book opened my eyes to a cats life like I had never seen before. All I can say is if you really love your cat or cats and want the very best for them, this book is a must have. Your cat will love you even more for it, and most likely for more years than you anticipated. The most unique aspect of this book is its simple yet amazing approach to the food your cat eats. A must read for all cat lovers.

  5. It's so simple: take away their dry food and feed only wet food. Compared to dry food, is higher in protein and fat and lower in carbs. Dry food must be based on corn or rice or some other grain, otherwise it could not hold its shape, so even the most high protein premium brands are still not as healthy for a cat than wet food.

My cats have lost weight and gained energy and playfulness as a result of the change in their diet. My older calico went from 15 pounds to 9 pounds in six months and is more satisfied with her meals. Right away, she felt better and became more active, which probably helped her burn off fat and she's still doing well three years later at the age of 16.

One of my cats loves dry food and begs for it, and if I give in too often she starts looking heavier--then I cut back again. I think of dry food as junk food comparable to potato chips for humans. (Ideally I would only use it when we need to be away from home for a few days, and then I try to find the highest protein content that I can.)

If you have a fat cat, just try this for two weeks and see if it isn't true. In the beginning they will want more wet food but will eventually settle down to about one small can per day per cat, if they are average sized cats, or maybe a little more. But don't be afraid of overfeeding the try food--it isn't as calorie dense as dry food.

And oh yes, buy the book--there's a lot of other advice besides diet info. I've had cats for years but still learned something new.

5 comments about The First Aid Companion for Dogs & Cats (Prevention Pets).

  1. This is a great book for at home emergency care for your dog or cat. It also has a lot of good home remedies that you can use. It doesn't go quite as deep as I would like for it too, but it has been very useful for us.

  2. A must have for a great pet owner. A go-to book that can save your furry family member's life!!!

  3. This book is a wonderful reference tool! I have 3 cats and a dog and it has been a big help..I highly recommend this book if you are a dog or cat owner.

  4. This was not at all what I expected it to be. I was hoping for something much more detailed. This book gives very general information and basically says to go to a veterinarian on every page. The book barely skims the surface of injuries or illnesses and provides VERY BASIC information tot he reader and in the end says to go to the vet.

I did find the bandaging pages somewhat useful but when looking up something like 'ring worm' and all you get is one sentence!

    I am very disappointed!

  5. I;ve had a copy of this book for about six years. I may not know where i have put certain things in my house but i KNOW where this book is at all times. I credit this book for saving the life of one of my dogs who jumped on the counter and took 7 pills meant for one of my other dogs at 3:00am. This is my bible, so i bought two more books one for my daughter and one for my son. They love the book.

5 comments about The Natural Cat: The Comprehensive Guide to Optimum Care.

  1. I used the information in the original of this book many years ago when an adopter in a cat shelter told me that his allergic wife could be around cats as long as they ate the supplements suggested in the book. This was a new way of thinking for me. So for years after that I routinely made up the combination of ingredients, all things I knew and understood, and added the requisite tablespoons to my cats' food. My allergic husband and son got better and better and lived happily with the cats. For that alone the book is worth having and reading.

  2. Ms Frazier has an exceptional ability to observe, assimilate info, and come up with great effective ways of caring for Cats (see my review of her "It's a Cat's Iife..."). She has included info for well Cats, sick Cats, kittens, new Cats, old Cats, problem Cats, long/short hair Cats, stray/feral Cats, abused Cats, etc. Good info on foods, making your own food, etc., various diseases, behavioural problems, litter box info, et.al.
The technical stuff is guided by Dr Pitcairn, the famous 1st Vet to really espouse holistic care for Cats, and others. I have only scanned my copy to date, but everything I've seen is right on, and, Though I've been studying about Cats for 12 yrs, this book has MUCH I've never seen before! I consider it a must-have book, for making sure your kitty is healthy and happy for a long time. (If kitty is happy, we're happy!)

  3. I had an older edition of this book and I replaced it with a new edition with this purchase.

I take a lot of supplements as do my cats. I have been looking for good ideas to get my cats on a more natural and healthy diet and this book gave me many ideas.
If you were as concerned about the pet food recall a few years ago as I was
you will enjoy this book. A good book to read along side it is The Nature of Animal Healing by Martin Goldstein DVM.

  4. This is a wonderful guide to holistic health -- Anitra provides lots of really good general information, as well as a LOT of dietary/healing info geared toward specific conditions. I heartily recommend it.

  5. Anitra Frazier's has put together an excellent book on the care and feeding
of cats. Rightfully referring to us as guardians rather than owners, she writes
with experience on how to care for our four-legged friends from a natural and
healthy point of view. She covers everything from diet and grooming to common feline
health problems. It is obvious that she, too, loves cats and writes with warmth
and compassion. A book truly worth reading and having on your shelf for quick reference.

5 comments about I Can Has Cheezburger?: A LOLcat Colleckshun.

  1. I can love this book?!

I have been a fan of the icanhascheezeburger website for quite some time and was very excited when it came out in book form! I picked it up and was very happy with what I saw inside. It is classic kitty pictures and their ultra funny sayings and thoughts. What is this book all about you ask? I will tell you! Basically, this is a book based on a website that started with cat pictures and the funny things they would say and/or think. The cats have obviously missed out on their basic spelling and grammar classes, and make several mistakes when it comes to their writing skills. Never seen the website? No worries! This cute little book explains some of the inside jokes that are such a big part of the website, that might have you scratching your head otherwise. Who is the audience for this delightful little nugget? Well, I would say anyone who is a cat lover, or maybe someone who doesn't like to pick up a hefty 700-page novel and read it cover to cover, or anyone who likes to have a chuckle. This is a book that can be picked up and turned to any page randomly and enjoyed. Reluctant teen readers, this is the book for you! I know you have heard of the website, and I know those classic, dead old guy books are not your thing.

As a high school teacher, I highly recommend this book to those students who might have trouble reading a traditional novel. I know that as English teachers we may have trouble excepting this as a "book" that students can read, but we have to remember that anything that gets students to pick up something and read it is a wonderful achievement. Reading is reading is reading. The fact that it is based off a website is just another way it sparks student interest. It can also be used as a stepping stone to other books of the same type, and possibly something more advanced down the road This is a book that can get teens reading and is really fun to boot. Awesome book!

This iz teh bookz you needz!!!

  2. When you see this book and you see the Lol-cat name you really would think it would have all the typical silly things you could find on lol-cats. the pictures that when you see them and read what it said it's just so witty and silly you cant help but burst out laughing. This book is cute just because it has some cute pictures of cats and the occassional picture that you can recognized from the website- or ripoffs from the more famous ones from the website too. . . but it's not on par with the website. I agree with other people saying that the captions can be down-write sad- it's as if a bunch of people decided to get together and make a bunch of them up to make a book. Let me give a few examples.....They put in a few of the classics such as the sad kitty standing on it's back feet saying "I made you a cookie....but I eated it", "Monorail Cat". . . but some are weird like one of a normal-non-silly looking black cat with a caption saying "myaar".....it's sorta odd. I got it just because I love cats and I do love lol-cats too but I was not expecting much from this book. as long as you dont get your hopes up you will not be disappointed with this book. haha!

  3. Very cute and funny book. If you are a cat lover, you'll appreciate the humor here.

  4. Just before I begin my reviews- from what I've read on the three most helpful reviews on the front page (as of 6/21/10), I noticed that only one of them (the 3 star one at least) sounds like they own the book. The othet two (the one star ones) both are just rants from people who clearly don't own the book and are mad because the "classics". And I'm not saying people aren't entitled to their own opinions- I'm just saying that bitching about your favorites not being included defeats the purpose of even purchasing the book.

OK rant over. That said, this book is pretty awesome. I own it and it makes for a good Coffee Table book, and something to pick you up when in a depressed mood. I don't normally visit the website, but I am someone who LOVES LOLcats! This one has it all- Monorail Cat, Emo Kitteh, ^5, Do want, chek her out, etc. It's a good introductory book for noobs to the Lolcat world and what have ya. Very hilarious, A recommended buy!

  5. I feel like the reviews for this book are a little harsh, so I thought I'd add in my two cents.

Overall, this is a really great book. While it is missing some of the lolcat classics, such as "invisible bike", it still holds up as a great lolcat collection. And besides, the book missing your favorite lolcat pictures (and I will admit, it was missing some of mine) is more personal preference than anything.

The book itself is very professional and well done. The pages are high quality paper, and the pics look great on them. Little illustrations of cats have also been added throughout the book. I think these are quite cute! They work especially well in the little "classroom" scenes.

The bottom line is, if you are a lolcat fan, you will more than likely enjoy this book. It's fun even if you aren't a fan. Everyone who I have showed this book to has loved it. (and believe me, a lot of people have thumbed through it as I leave it on a table in my living room!)
