5 comments about The Cat Behavior Answer Book: Practical Insights & Proven Solutions for Your Feline Questions (Answer Book (Storey)).

  1. Borrowed this from a friend and I really liked it. Raised some interesting points and is full of new ideas.

  2. Not what I was looking for. I've been a companion to cats for over 30 years and wanted to understand how to really take it to the next level: interpreting my kitty's meows, understanding her moods, learning how to be the best pal I could be to my BFF. This book did not provide much more than overviews. The "overview" on meow-types was very paltry and did not even mention the type of sound my cat makes when she leaves a "gift" by my door. (She's an indoor cat, but I hide a toy with cat treats in it every night and she finds it and brings it to my bedroom door as a gift. Too sweet.) I think this book would be best for brand new cat owners---I mean companions.

  3. This is not the most amazing cat book ever. It is just another cat book. All these super positive reviews made me hope I would find answers that I haven't been able to find in dozens of other cat books, but within seconds, I knew this wasn't the book either. I looked up "spraying" in the index and all I got was Feliway for an answer, which I don't believe really works. It doesn't work on any of my eight cats. And medication, but doesn't say what medication. Just go to the vet. Gee, thanks. Like I couldn't figure that out.

  4. I bought this as a gift for someone who inherited a cat, and had not had one before. She was delighted that
it gave her so much detaied information on cat behavior and how to interact.

    Good, practical advice.

  5. This is a cool little quick reference guide to anyone who has a quirky cat.

5 comments about Four Paws Five Directions: A Guide to Chinese Medicine for Cats and Dogs.

  1. This is an excellent reference book for both beginners & experts. It is well organized, easy to understand & contains a wealth of information.

  2. This book is a constantly used handbook for me. I bought this copy to replace the one that I have given away most recently. It is wonderful to be able to help your pet feel better, in addition to what your vet can do, with relatively inexpensive remedies available at the health food store and with accupressure which also helps you bond with your pet. I was even able to get remarkable results from an inexpensive & common TCM patent remedy for my dog who had great difficulty moving her hindquarters after a life-threatening infection. it worked within hours!

  3. I bought this book on the recommendation of an integrative vet I know. It does throughly explain TCM, but if you aren't familar with TCM, I would recommend having someone help explain it to you. Some of the info in the book can be used without reading in depth and I used some of the techniques to ease stiffness in pets right away. I haven't pick it up much because it isn't a "light read", at least to me- not a book to read to past time. It is through, probably one of the best layperson books for animal Traditional Chinese Medicine. The price is really good, too, and the book is almost 400 pages.

  4. This was a wonderful and interesting book. I loved learning how Chinese Medicine applies to our pets. I have gotten much knowledge from this and have tried some of the techniques. They work!!!

  5. This book shows the pictures I really needed, besides the explanation of where and how to find the points. It tells what the points are used for, and I am very happy with the book. I have used some of the points to keep my dog alive, she has Systemic Lupus, and had gotten to the point of not eating at all, I used some of the points to stimulate her appatite, then several more groups to stimulate her stomach, spleen, liver, and kidneys, etc. I had another dog with S.L.E. and she died because she had no hunger, and she was stopped up so she couldn't eliminate. So far this book has helped in both cases. I also use energy (Reiki-Do) and others energies, but that's another story. It all works together so far. My dog is getting elderly though, so don't know how much longer we have, but this book has helped to make her life much better WITHOUT harmful drugs (my other dog had the drugs and lasted only 11 months). Dog has been in remission on several occassions so far, without drugs and we are coming up on 11 months with her. Keeping our fingers crossed and am not yet using the book to its fullest.

5 comments about Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats : Your A-Z Guide to Over 200 Conditions, Herbs, Vitamins, and Supplements.

  1. My Bichon, Bailey, has food allergies. I bought this book to do research on this subject, and found it had lots of other very informative information. I am looking into natural homemade diets and natural care. It did the trick! It was very resonably priced for the size and information it has in it... Also so easy to read and understand.. I would highly recommend it!
    Sharon Coombs
    Herndon, Ky.

  2. This is one of the more detailed books I have found. I also got Health for Happy Cats and Your Cat by Elizabeth Hodgkins. This one has a lot of details about what to feed, how to feed it, what the diseases are and what the treatments are. You can look it up by both disease and symptom and treatment, which is fantastic. They discuss pros and cons of various things. They also have a good section on cooking natural diet versus raw natural diet. They are more advocates of cooked diet as far as I can tell. They also have a few diets. If you are going to get one book on natural health for cats this should be it. there is a lot of information on supplements.

  3. This book contains lots of helpful information for those seeking alternative treatments for their pets. I was pleased with the level of detail in the explanations given for specific health conditions and the suggested treatments.

  4. I've owned this book for over 4 years and I use it here and there. Although no book ever covers everything, it covers quiet a bit and it is worth every cent you pay for it. If you are into natural health for your dog, this book is a must have.

  5. I am a certified alternative healthcare consultant in NY and for PEOPLE I know alot, but dogs , especially my beloved Elmo, are quite different. While we use a holistic vet and Dr. Dym was here and gave free consults. I wanted and needed MORE so I personally was well informed and was doing the BEST I could to give all of my pets the longest , healthiest lives .
I think most all of us know the basics of GOOD quality food, exercise, emotional closeness, etc.(real Age .com gives you a questionarre and advice on your dogs real age and where and what to improve upon)
So this book gives you a multitude of preventive and curative advice in one easy to read and to use book that is quite accurate.
I am glad to have it . AND a MAJOR point is that this is not a fear inducing book i.e. your dog will die from generic dogfoods, cancer is rampant etc(We own a grooming shop and these dogs even on awful generic food are doing quite well and many are pretty old) I do agree premium dog food is best BUT that is not the ONLY factor in good health, and this book stays on an even keel not going off the wall in either direction.
    Very useful.

5 comments about The First Aid Companion for Dogs & Cats (Prevention Pets).

  1. I definitely reccomend this for anyone who loves their cats and dogs like family members! There are many life saving tips in this great book. I bought this book because I have a cat who like to chew on things, including electrical wires. I learned a lot about this scary issue, as well as, many other life saving bits of information that I had never known before. There is even a section on human medicine that is safe for cats and dogs. I think this book would come in handy in the event of an emergency after vet hours!!

  2. The book is in great shape and is new, however, it took too long to receive it & I wouldn't purchase another book from a1 because of the length of time it took to recieve it.

  3. I've been looking for a book like this. I'm a nurse and was taught many interventions to assist a patient in crisis in addition to contacting a physician. That's nursing for humans. Now I have the information to assist my pets. This book covers every thing from minor first aid to life saving interventions. It's organized so that you can find what you need quickly. Its written in such a down-to-earth style that I know what to do within a paragraph or two.

  4. This is a wonderful movie. Exquisitely executed in period costume, with a world class orchestra. It was delightfully free of uneccessary verbage and saturated with eroticism. Sandra

  5. I own Animal Companions pet sitting service in Houston, Texas, and I found this book a must-have for pet professionals. Laid out in a format similar to a Physician's Desk Reference, you may easily and quickly (and time is always of the essence with a sick pet!) look up information based on presenting symptoms.

It is an amazing supplement to hands-on first aid training. I immediately purchased a copy of this book for myself and each of my employees, to keep in our cars right next to our pet first aid kit. I also picked up a copy to keep at home, for my own furry loved ones.

5 comments about Twisted Whiskers: Solving Your Cat's Behavior Problems.

  1. Since I am a cat lover, I had to check this book out. This book truly helps with all aspects in the way of kitty care. I've read many books on what to do or not to do with kitty behavior problems but this one is on my must have list. If you have behavior problems with your kitty, start with this one. Easy to read and great detail and clear instructions. Plus she gives a holistic bend to it. Way cool! I've order four extra copy of this book to give to my friends as a gift. Every time I'm ordering books, I throw this one along with my order. I'll have an extra copy to give to someone who may need some help with their kitty.

  2. I found this book to be both helpful and enjoyable. I have a 5 month old kitten that I have had since 3 weeks of age when he was rescued by my son. Since we have had him from so young an age, he has had some socialization issues. This book has an extensive collection of problems and solutions that I have found to be interesting and easy to implement with my cat. I think it is definitely worth having as a resource.

  3. I bought this book at the same time as I bought Arden Moore's "Cat Behavior Answer Book," & although this book is good, it's not as helpful as Moore's book. The "Cat Behavior Answer Book" gave me a more thorough discussion of issues, & more specific solutions than this book. One of my cat's issues is night-time meowing, which wakes me up, & Moore's book helped me solve the problem more than this book did.

  4. Excellent and entertaining book on understanding, enjoying, and modifying the behavior of our furry little (or big) feline friends.

  5. This book will help you know your cat better than you ever thought possible. It's a fast reading and provides lots of ideas about how to manage problems with your cat. Required reading for everyone who lives with a kitty.

5 comments about Bad Cat: 244 Not-So-Pretty Kitties And Cats Gone Bad.

  1. Furrier than the Bad Babies and twice as cute! Just more proof of how animated and sneaky kitties can be.

  2. This is a funny look at cats and their desires, wishes, and secret thoughts. A must-read for cat owners -- you'll never believe what your cat is really thinking!

  3. This book is stinkin' (not in a litter box sort of way) hilarious! BUT it is NOT FOR CHILDREN. My 10 year-old talked me into buying it for him. The cover looked benign, so I said yes. He was laughing so hard, I asked to look at it. I laughed so hard, I had to take it away from him. It is filled with adult content. It's now in MY bathroom reading basket.

Lucy Adams, author of If Mama Don't Laugh, It Ain't Funny

  4. OK, I'm biased. I love cats. And, having grown up with cats, I'm familiar with their sneakily evil ways! Do not trust the Cat! The Cat will show you who's Boss! All the same, the Cat should be spotlighted for the antics it's capable of... This book does a beautiful job of spotlighting and respecting. Add to that, this book (or, rather, the premise behind it) gives readers the opportunity to participate in the wonder that is Cat. Are you a cat owner? You may send photos of the feline in your life to [...] and know that the author of "Bad Cat" will show him/her in his/her best/worst light! Are you a cat admirer? The author will prove to you, once and for all, that the Cat is to be at once feared and revered. The Cat is in charge. Never doubt that!

  5. My wife howled when she read this book. Then she had to call all her friends and tell them about it. This book is very good at bringing out the real or imagined personalities of cats and how they put up with us. It shows a lot of 'cattitude'.

5 comments about Whole Health for Happy Cats: A Guide to Keeping Your Cat Naturally Healthy, Happy, and Well-Fed (Quarry Book).

  1. Whole Health for Happy Cats has become my cat bible. It lives in the kitchen with my `human' recipe books. Like them, it's covered in...ahem... `stuff', as I refer to it so often, particularly with regard to making nutritionally-balanced, cat-appropriate food.

My three cats are benefiting greatly from the info on nutrition and gentle holistic means for treating illness and disease. I'm also benefiting by saving a fortune on vet visits and expensive drugs that often just treat the symptom, not the cause. I feel so much more empowered knowing that I can treat common ailments myself, using items readily available from most health food stores. The book also explains when I should go to the vet without delay. The book is thoroughly researched using the latest information available. For this reason, it's far more useful than older books on the subject.

Without this book, I wouldn't have the confidence to make my animals' food myself. This book has all the information I need to know that the food I'm giving them is not only enjoyable for them to eat, but is nutritionally balanced, based on the latest research in cat nutrition. Given the tragic pet food contamination that killed thousands of cats and dogs, I can sleep at night knowing that my guys won't be the victims of less-than-optimum quality control and cat-inappropriate `filler' ingredients that are in so many commercial pet foods.

I particularly love the `mix and match' table which shows you how to nutritionally balance various types of meat with the other things cats' need.

For those who don't want to make their cats' meals, the book includes details on what to look for in commercial cat food, and what to avoid.

The book covers a whole raft of issues including diet, first aid, treating minor ailments, behavioural issues, reducing stress during vet visits, cat-toxic plants, how to introduce cats to each other to minimise hissing, spitting and flying fur, solving toilet troubles and how to resolve conflict in multi-cat households. There's even a recipe for safe, cat-appropriate tooth paste to maintain good teeth and gum health (I'm psyching myself up to try that out) and a gentle tummy soother.

The book is very easy to read, with lots of gorgeous photos, side bars, graphs and tables and interesting facts and figures. An absolute winner. I've given copies of this book to others and it's also in my public library.

My cats are healthy, lean, purring machines and they have this book and the author's extensive knowledge to thank for that. Every purrson should have a copy.

  2. I first found the web-site and bought the book; first for myself and then many friends. It's so very wonderfully written. Nothing 'in your face' that you have to do certain things. So easy to read and the photos are great. I've recently had a problem with a couple kitties and with the help of Sandy's book, things are SO much better.... Please get it and read it....and get some for your friends....

  3. This book has become a most valuable resource in my house, I have learned so much about proper cat care from Sandy Arora and treasure this book very much. I keep it handy with my cookbooks in the kitchen even :) This book helped me learn to take better care of my cats, they have made the smooth transition to an all raw diet, supplemented by other natural methods of keeping. My copy was always out on loan that I finally got a second copy!

  4. To another pet parent looking for a balance between nutrition and ease of sticking to the routine, this provides guidance sometimes omitted if just dealing with a vet on an annual basis. Our Moxley's 11.5 years young and we almost lost him to urinary cystitis over six years ago. Luckily, his vet succesfully performed a perineal urethrostomy and he's been trouble free since. Although excessive ash in his food was allegedly to blame, it made me re-evaluate what he was eating. He also had slight allergies and some dry spots over his eyebrows which we were told were untreatable as they did not respond to prescription creams. Otherwise, he seemed healthy. Since then, he eats home made food, often raw, with fish capsules squished into the commercial food he gets as a treat. His fur is glorious, eyes clear, dry spots forgotten and he is focused on getting the most out of his life. (If you want to see the sheen of his fur, check out YouTube for Moxley cat spanking). We recommend this book as a great addition to a home library and to share with other (less enlightened) pet owners. When the horror of the pet food recalls happened, we felt safe and grieved for others' loss. No one should blindly trust "corporate strangers" in their pet's welfare. This book will help you take control of it with ease.

  5. A must for every cat owner concerned with proper nutrition and care, to ensure a long, healthy life for their feline family members.

5 comments about Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats.

  1. This book contains good information on how to feed a raw diet based on Billinghurst's barf diet. I think it would be helpful for people considering switching to a raw diet, as well as beginners.

My problem with this book is that the author annoyed me. The first quarter of the book is about how wonderful she is. The last quarter of the book is full of amazing anecdotes about animals on her diet. I don't have the patience for either. It you like anecdotes about how wonderful the author and her diet are, you will probably like this book much better than I did.

While I agree with most of the things the author says about nutrition and dog food companies, she doesn't back up anything she says. If I was starting out as a new raw-feeder, I'm not sure I would find this book very convincing. I definitely wouldn't recommend this book as your only resource.

For beginners, I would recommend "Raw Dog Food" by Carina Beth MacDonald. For people who want to understand the nutritional principles behind a raw or homemade diet, I would recommend "Home-Prepared Dog & Cat Diets" by Donald Strombeck. They're a better investment of time and money.

  2. If you are looking for straight forward, sound information on providing a raw diet for your pet this is a fine resource. The section on nutrients is very good. In it you will learn what food sources provide what nutients and what parts of the bodys health they aide and supportThe 'shopping list' is also a nice spring board for the newbe. There is a ratio guide that addresses serving size to weight balance. The book includes a significant resource guide as well. If you are interested in providing a Raw, natural, BARF type diet for your pet this is the book I would recomend.

  3. This book saved my dogs' life. We struggled with a very serious allergy for years, one day I saw Kymythys' book and decided to go with the raw diet. My dogs' health turned the corner and he has never looked back. He will be 10 this year and I could not be more grateful.
I have read loads of other books on raw feeding but keep coming back to this one.

  4. This is a good starting point if you are considering a raw or barf diet for you pet ... it is written simply for everyone to understand and gives many helpful observations, answers, and suggestions for those interested in this type of dietary regimine for their dog.

  5. Very interesting and informative book. A must for anyone who cares what they put into their cats or dogs dishes. Details on raw feeding and cooking for animals. A terrific book for anyone who owns dogs or cats.

5 comments about Cat Training in 10 Minutes.

  1. Not sure if it worked in 10 minutes but did have some ideas to try. Wouldnt be the first book I would buy on training but worth a shot if other ideas fail.

  2. Don't know what else to do with your cat besides petting and playing a game catch the string or ball? Have fun, train your cat.

I just got this book and already my cat and I have spent time doing the beginning tricks and she's loving it! She bit my finger though trying to get the treat, so I suggest you follow the book and make yourself a training spoon. As for getting a 'clicker' I haven't found a good reason to use it. (After trying the 'come here' command successfully several times without the clicker, I tried it with the clicker and the sound scared my cat--maybe we'll work on it...)

Good info in this book--it would be nice if they can make a cat training DVD. It's nice to see it working.

  3. I like this book for it's teaching methods concerning positive techniques, for example, teaching a cat to do tricks. It has good step by step instructions for novice cat trainers to use. But the book falls far short in the section called "Correcting Improper Behavior." The author almost seems to assume that you'll be present, for example, every time kitty jumps on the counter, & that's just not going to be the case for most people, especially working people. The author suggests correcting improper behaviors by hissing at your cat while using a water pistol. I've tried it, & it doesn't work. Part of the problem is that when you see your cat doing something undesirable, you have to go & get the water pistol. By that time, the cat's finished with the behavior & it's too late to follow the procedure. I don't tend to walk around the house with a water pistol in my hand or pocket all day long, & many times, kitty silently surprises me with what he's doing. Another option is to keep a water pistol in every room, also not practical! In addition, many people want to buy a book such as this one to halt improper behaviors, & there are very few such behaviors covered in this book. So for the positive approaches, it's a good book, but it's not sufficient for dealing with improper behaviors.

  4. I'm a HUGE fan of this book. It has straightforward, easy-to-follow instructions with clear illustrations, and it really works! I'm working my way up to the bigger things (like walking on a leash), but so far, with only 5-10 minutes of "training" a day, my cat has quickly picked up both the "come" and the "sit" commands. This book suggests particular hand signals to pair with the voice commands (which the pictures clarify) and they REALLY seem to make a difference. My kitty even responds to the hand signals alone now, which is great. But to pick up these behaviors in a day or two is truly impressive! I can't get over how fast he's learning all these things, and all credit goes to the book. It's a great resource for training your cat, and I highly recommend it to everyone.

  5. I purchased this book and another entitled "Getting Started: Clicker Training for Cats". The latter is absolutely useless! It is filled with antedotes and very little to almost no instruction. What a waste. "10 mintues" is the only book you need to clicker train your feline. My very energetic kitten has responded almost instantly to clicker training. It gives her something to do and think about, as well as use all the excess energy! After three 10 minute sessions my kitten targets, comes, sits, and twirls, as well as taking treats from my hand politely. What more can I say? Buy this book!

5 comments about Angel Cats: Divine Messengers of Comfort.

  1. what a heart warming book with great stories in it.

  2. A friend gave me this book a week ago today. My wonderful cat (my companion of nearly 14 years), Trouble, died last week of kidney failure and my friend thought I could use a little comfort. I haven't read the entire book yet, but the last section on how animals say good-bye to us was truly touching to me and helped me to see that I'm not crazy for feeling so blue. Reading sections of this book allowed me to see that Trouble's desire to be held that last night he was with me was his way of saying good-bye and trying to let me know that he knew it was time and that he (and I) would be ok.

  3. This book has some great stories which are heart warming and meaningful for the soul. These stories are way for people to see that animals can truly love there human. I would give this book out for gift to people who are lonely and think that nobody can love them.

  4. In these uncertain and harrowing times, those of us who share life with cats have the advantage of being able to reach out and touch softness, comfort, unconditional love and loyalty whenever we stroke our cats. ANGEL CATS: DIVINE MESSENGERS OF COMFORT by Allen Anderson is a prosaic comforter and provides much-needed balm for the soul by illuminating stories of cats' singular love for their chosen humans, each other, and other living beings. I heartily recommend this book for all cat lovers, most especially those who wish to understand their relationships to their cats on a spiritual level, and for all who look forward to meeting beloved feline family members "at the Rainbow Bridge" and beyond.

  5. I highly reccommend this book to animal lovers, and especially cat lovers. We are not in this world alone. God has blessed us with cats who can teach us patience, humor, compassion and unconditional love if you will let them. My cats have always been a comfort to me and a reflection of the eternal.
