4 comments about The Stray Cat Handbook (Howell Reference Books).

  1. Ms. Kreuz's book is truly the textbook for all things feral cat-related. The book even contains some extremely useful information for anyone considering starting their own cat rescue organization or for the average person just wondering what they can do to help that scrawny stray without getting an arm clawed off in the process. Well-written, clear, and concise- I can't recommend this book enough to anyone interested in feline welfare.

  2. This is an excellent resource for anyone with an interest in helping stray cats. Using advice I garnered primarily from this book and my vet, I turned a wounded stray cat into a contented house cat.

  3. I heard this author was on TV after winning a special award because of its concise and well written content.

  4. This book gives a clear cut, no nonsense, help for those of us with many stray and feral cats in our neighborhoods. As the preface states: "it is a definite how to guide for helping the millions of stray and feral cats currently living outdoors."

2 comments about Why Do Cats Do That?: Real Answers to the Curious Things Cats Do...with training tips.

  1. Part of the fun of living with cats lies in pondering their mysterious ways. Top pet writer Kim Thornton has written a charming book with answers to a few of the common questions that arise. She knows her subject, and in 20 short chapters covers such mysteries as why cats purr, like catnip, and sleep so much. Behavior problems such as scratching and spraying are discussed, with common sense suggestions about how to correct such behaviors. Illustrated with color cartoons by Keith Robinson, this is an amusing, practical, and useful book to keep on hand for those times when Fuzzy puzzles you.

  2. "Why Do Cats Do That" is an informative book. It tells why cats do the things they do! For instance, why their eyes glow, why they purr, why the flop down on their sides when they are happy...and so on. However, this book is a bit on the dull side, and not one to really get into.

4 comments about Complete Kitten Care.

  1. Really eased my fears and concerns about being a new cat parent. Used most techniques/suggestions and must say that my kittens are a real joy. I don't think I would have had such a positive experience if it were not for this book.

  2. I was looking for books on kittens and I got something better:
A book on complete kitten care. This book has got the lot.For a book of its size I am impressed. This book covers various aspects on kittens from where to purchase, where not to buy,the kitten's new home, toys and so much more. This is a comprehensive book.

This is a must have book for anyone considering buying/adopting a kitten. This book will help you before you buy a kitten so by the time you bring one home you will have already a home for your new kitten. This book is great value too.I highly recommend this book.

I was too busy enjoying the book so I didnt bother finding fault.

  3. I picked up this book last year, and I studied it carefully before getting my first kitten, Ginny. The title doesn't lie, "Complete Kitten Care" is exactly what you get. The three-month old female I got last August is now a happy and healthy member of my family thanks to the advice from this book.

The topics covered here involve everything essential that a kitty novice needs to know, such as vet visits, spaying/neutering, adjusting to other pets, and grooming. The most important chapters that should not go unread are the sections that deal with medical emergencies (falls, drowning, and electrocution), and recognizing/treating sick kittens. I'm lucky enough not to have applied that information to my experiences with my kitten, but it's still good to know.

On the behavior front, "Complete Kitten Care" helps you understand your kitten's way of thinking and help you fix his mistakes, particularly litterbox-related mistakes. Also very helpful is the chapter on understanding body language, and how your kitty communicates with you. I now understand all of Ginny's moods by the size of her pupils, volume and pitch of her meow, position of her ears, and how her tail is held.

This book doesn't go without any entertainment, though. There are lots of adorable kitten photos and drawings that will easily melt your heart. In the back of the book, it has cat legends and fun facts, and there are lists of cat-related web sites, magazines, care organizations, pet supply sources, and other cat books.

    Highly reccomended! A+

  4. I've fostered dozens of kittens in the last ten years and made just about every mistake there is to make. Now that I have this book, I'll never take on another little one without having it at hand. All parts of this book are valuable to the new kitten owner, but I especially appreciate the sections on recognizing and treating health problems in young animals, and the section on emergencies is priceless. It tells you how to rescue your little one from a dog or other animal, how to administer artificial respiration if necessary, even perform acupuncture to jump start a stopped heart, how to give CPR to a drowned kitty, how to slow down shock, what to do if kitty ingests a poison plant, how to treat both heatstroke and hypothermia.

There's much else in the book, including learning to play with your kitty, understand her communications, and provide the kinds of toys and equipment that will suit her needs best. Complete Kitten Care is just what the title says it is. You probably shouldn't even think about acquiring a new kitten until you have a copy.

Besides presenting a wealth of knowledge, Shojai's book is fun to read. She has an obvious love of her subject, but it's tempered with good common sense and a great sense of humor. You can actually sit down and read this book through, rather than just thumbing to the section you need at any one time--it's that readable. She has a way of making the technical stuff understandable to us folks whose only qualification is that we love kitties.

  1. This is neat little book and great for any cat-lover. Quotes from the famous and not so famous. The pictures are great. I bought it because I am doing cat art and the illustrations are outstanding and capture the cat's unique personalities.

  2. This is a great little book for the cat lover. Wonderful quotes are paired with Lesley Anne Ivory's exquisite cat paintings.

  3. A great book for the child who loves cats.

  4. I love this little book. I had bought several of her calendars and always enjoyed them. But this book can be kept thoughout the years.

  5. Jean Cocteau said:
I love cats because I enjoy my home; and little by little, they become its visible soul. And this is right,so home really is where cats are.

5 comments about kittenwar: may the cutest kitten win!.

  1. If you like cats / Kittens this is for you. Book based upon web site comparing cutest kitten. Mostly a "picture" book :)

  2. I purchased the book on Christmas Eve at my local B&N. My son had to be practically dragged bodily from the book table even though I assured him that I had bought a copy and it was in the bag.

This book was the unexpected hit of Christmas Day. Everyone, regardless of age and whether or not they were "cat people," became engrossed in choosing which kitten was the cutest and booing if their choice was dissed on the next page. I hope they come out with a Kittenwar board game next, or maybe a Kittenwar for the X box crowd?

  3. If you enjoy the "Kittenwar" site, you will love this book! I am giving it to my niece who has a new kitten and she will love it!

  4. I love this little book. I participated in the contest and was pleasantly surprised to see the picture of my kitten in the book. Then I found my name in the credits for the photographs. How cool is that!

  5. If you love kittens this is a wonderful book. My daughter brought it to school and those girls can not get enough of it.

5 comments about French for Cats: All the French Your Cat Will Ever Need.

  1. WHETHER YOU HAVE A CAT - OT NOT- THIS BOOK IS FUN.
AS USUAL BEFORE ORDERING,I CHECKED THE "LOOK INSIDE THIS BOOK" PAGES, AND FOUND MYSELF LAUGHING. THE CAT COMMENTS ARE THE VERY THINGS ANY REASONABLE CAT WOULD MUTTER- OR MEOW. THE LINE DRAWINGS ARE APPEALING AS WELL.
I GAVE A COPY TO MY TEENAGE GRANDDAUGHTER WHO IS TAKING 1ST YEAR FRENCH IN SCHOOL. (WONDER HOW SHE'LL USE IT FOR EXTRA CREDIT...) NOW I NEED A COPY FOR MYSELF!

  2. As a cat lover and as a (not so continuous) student of the French language, I thought this book was funny. The author has certainly captured the attitude of most cats in this world. If you want a chuckle here and there and to learn a little French along the way, then this is the book for you.

  3. This product was definitely mis-represented. Although it contains quite a bit of dry wit, the French translation has absolutely no phonetic assistance. So, if you don't know how to pronounce the phrases - you are out of luck. If I wanted a book of one-liners, I would have purchased something from Shecky Greene or Jackie Mason. I wound up re-gifting this book to a French acquaintance of mine. Don't waste your money.

  4. Don't over think this one. This little book won't be mentioned on Oprah or noted at your book club. Just buy a used copy of this book and stuff it into your jacket pocket until you need to pass some time with a smile on your face. If you like cats or just want to brush-up on your French you'll find this colorfully illustrated book a delight. There is an added benefit beyond your amusement. You will find the experiences of "le chat" useful in social situations. The next time you are at a boring function remember what your feline friend would say.

Je crois que je vais cracher une boule de poils
(I think I am going to cough up a fur ball)

  5. This is an absolutely delightful book with cute illustrations as well as clever observations about cats. It is also a fun way to brush up on your French. I first read this little book in the waiting room of my veterinarian's office. It was so cute, I had to have my own copy. I keep it on the coffee table and reread it from time to time just to lift my spirits. Anyone who loves cats will enjoy every page. It would make a cute gift for a cat lover.

2 comments about The Silent Miaow.

  1. A sweet little book which will have some cat owners squirming, as they realise just exactly how far their beloved "pet" has them twisted around their little finger - er, paw. It's supposedly a manual for young cats on how to select their family and train their humans, and most cat lovers will recognise themselves as the "trainees"! The illustrations set off the text perfectly. I've found this an ideal book to give as gifts to my cat-loving friends, so sorry it's out of print. If you can track one down, grab it!

  2. The Silent Miaow, Translated from the Feline and Edited by Paul W. Gallico.

It's just exactly as fun as it sounds. The author writes about how he "found" the manuscript, then translated it. The book itself is a first-person "how-to" book from the perspective of a cat.

There are chapters like "Tidbits at the Table" (go for the man first, then everyone will give in), "Take Over" and "Doors" (if you learn to open them, never let on, or they'll stop waiting on you). Some of it's a bit much, such as the way to butter up men. (And the "Food" chapter is positively Machivellian.)

Since it's all in good fun (and occasionally quite sweet), I enjoy this kind of thing. There is some actual facts, but they never get in the way of the flavor: pure fun.

Lots of black and white photos complete this funny jaunt. This book would be enjoyed even by people who believe cats _are_ controlling like this.

5 comments about Himalayan Cats (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. Some important data about vaccination, standards, colors and behavior. Could have more specifical details on neutering (what age) and so on.

  2. The book was well written. Chapters are informative for general information on keeping and caring for cats. however, the book was so general that i think they had a word document formated so all they had to do was insert the word Himalayan before the word cat throughout the book.

the only specifics in this book related to Himalayans is the pedigree origination, and only in very simple terms, and grooming long haired cats and is generally applicable to any long hair cat.

however, the book is loaded with really pretty color pictures of a diverse assortment of Himalayans.

If you want a picture book with Himalayan cat pics and general cat information this is the book for you.

If you are a breeder or looking to show Himies definitley look elsewhere, or you will be frustated that you spent the time and money on this book.

  3. I recently bought a flame point breeder/show quality himalayan kitten and was very interested in what the book had to say.

The book is very informative and straight forward in telling the origins of how himmies came about, how to care, treat, nurse the cats.

It covers kittens behaviours, sexual behaviour, guides you in how to choose a breeder and questions to ask, how to breed and show your himmy so all in all, it's a pretty informative manual with glossy pics of some beautiful himmies and regular black/white illustrations.

    You won't be disappointed!

  4. I really enjoyed this book -- it's well written and helpful for both new and experienced cat lovers. I've owned Himmies for many years and all of the advice is useful and accurate. Every chapter is packed with good information; I particularly liked the chapters on grooming, nutrition, and understanding cat behavior. And the price is certainly right compared to other breed books!

  5. This book is so generic it is hopelessly useless. Save the [amt] orcat food or grooming supplies-you're going to need them. Even the chapter on grooming is useless. Follow the bathing instructions in this book to get a matted cat at the end. A little advise here for free: Do not rub the fur! Oh Boy! The instructions for blow drying! Blow drying a Himalayan is an art in itself and these instructions are worse than useless, might as well air dry the cat (Don't of course). The advise on choosing a cat is even worse. More free advise: Don't choose one without checking out the current breed standards - NW Region Himalayan Show cat exhibitor

2 comments about Everything I Know About Parenting I Learned from My Puppy.

  1. One of my clients sent me this book, and I enjoyed every word and picture. I have been a dog trainer for over 20 years, and it is very true that children and puupies are a lot alike for the first couple of years. When I had a client with well behaved children, I knew the puppy would be easy to train. When the children were brats, the puppy usually was too.

  2. I bought this as a gift for friends who had just gotten a lab puppy. Very cute book and makes a great gift.
