1. This is the single most important book for any veterinarian considering orthopaedic surgery in the dog and cat.
   If I had to give up all my orthopaedic texts except one - this is the text I would keep. It is clear, succinct and comprehensive.



2. The book is extremely thorough, and contains five parts. The 1ST part, on general principles and diagnosis, is useful as a reference. Parts 2 and 3 are dedicated to the front and hindlimbs respectively and are organized following an "anatomic" layout. Part 4 lumps mandible, maxilla and abnormal bone growth while Part 5 covers musculoskeletal pathologies. The book is extremely lacking in topics of a neuro-orthopedic nature. The book is nicely illustrated and is easy to follow.

   This book is comprehensive but limited on its description of specific surgical procedures. If you think that this book will make you an orthopedic surgeon, you are stupid. This book will serve as a refresher, will allow you to convey proper information to clients or to help you make a decision on when (and why) to refer to a more qualified/boarded specialist. If I had to pick ONE orthopedic reference for the general clinician, this would be the book I would recommend.




3. I bought this book when I graduated and I started using it when I did a small animal surgery internship. You can find allmost every type of fracture and a choice of different surgical procedures to fix the fracture you are confronted with. This book describes not only fractures, but several pathological disorders of joints and bones of dogs and cats. I think I use it at least twice a week and this book has never let me down. I would recommend this to every veterinarian who is seriously taking up orthopedic surgery in small animals.

1. Gives a fairly detailed analysis of many of the inherited disorders of dogs, cats, and horses. Good for veterinarians, breeders, and interested owners.

1. This is a nice "general purpose" cat book for children. It doesn't go into detail about anything in particular, but touches briefly on topics such as what food cat's should eat, how there are long and short hair varieties, and why spaying is a good idea.
   
   The author's strength, besides being a vet, is that he emphasizes the functionality of cat's special features. He explains, for example, that they use their tails to balance and communicate, and that their whiskers are very important in feeling their surroundings.

   While this might sound like a lot of information, it isn't. Topics are usually handled on two facing pages with less that one page worth of text interspersed with photographs, humorous conversation balloons, and fun snippets.
   
   Four Stars [B-] This is a nice general purpose book for elementary aged children. The format is what I call 'lively'. There are plenty of photos of various sizes that break up the text, plenty of blurbs and captions.
   
   The Accelerated Reading/ATOS designation is 4.2. The book can be read to any child, of course.
