1 comments about My Fat Cat: Ten Simple Steps to Help Your Pet Lose Weight for a Long and Happy Life.

  1. In this day and age, news about the obesity crisis is everywhere. Americans are fatter than ever, and we know it. But what about the family cat? What makes his or her little weight issue less important?

Ms. Garvey addresses this topic in My Fat Cat. Do you know how to tell if your cat is overweight? Or how to ensure that your cat lives a healthy life? If not, you would be doing your furry friend a service by reading this book. Garvey's clear, straightforward advice on improving your pet's diet and exercise routines and plenty more make this book a must-own for any cat-lover whose cat has a bit of a paunch (or more).

You've probably been on a diet yourself at some point in the past year. You try to eat right, stay active, and generally live a healthy life. So why not seek the same for your cat? The way is simple, and Ms. Garvey's book is a great way to find it.

1 comments about The New Cat Handbook (New Pet Handbooks).

  1. When I was younger, my older sister was always the "CatGuru" of the house, so I never really bothered about the care ofour cats; she always took care of the technicalities of cat care, I merely enjoyed the company of my cat/s. After she left for college, I was left with the reality of everything involved with the proper handling of cats (vaccinations, general concerns, etc.)Then I discovered my sister's secret: "The New Cat Handbook". It has EVERYTHING you need to know, especially if you've never had a cat. It gives you simulated situations which you can compare to, and gives you solutions for common problems that occur often enough, problems that could worry you out of your mind if you did not know anything about feline tendencies. Detailed explanations about cat behavior and cat care which are essential to all owners are covered in this book. Having this book at home is like having a personal cat expert right by your side.

3 comments about Cat Caught My Heart: Stories of Wisdom, Hope, and Purrfect Love.

  1. Some of the stories in the book are pretty sad. All of the authors talk about how a cat came into their lives and changed them forever. I expected a book that would make me laugh at typical cat antics but what I got was a book that nearly made me cry every time I read it. It's nice to read a book about how a cat helped someone through tough times but this book just wasn't it. It's a pretty depressing book.

  2. If you love cats, you will love this book. It's all about real people's relationships with their cats. The stories are funny and sad and sometimes amazing, but they are consistently touching. And contrary to the previously review, the stories are NOT all about cats dying!

  3. The actual title of this book should be "How My Cat Died." This compilation of memoirs almost without exception describes the demise of the beloved cat, and the pain the owner went through in the process, which is not surprizing, as a great number of anecdotes are lifted from a cyberspace pet-loss grief site. If anyone has ever gone through the soul-wrenching agony of losing a loved pet, this book will do nothing but reawaken the grief and pain of that experience. As none of this is noted on the book's jacket, I felt this book was highly misleading and the publishers should be ashamed of themselves.

3 comments about Guide to Owning a Dachshund (Re Dog Series).

  1. Even though the front and back cover both show "housebreaking" as part of what is included in the book, it is not mentioned even once in the book. The book mostly provides a historical perspective and physical description of the breed. There is very little practical information on how to properly take care of a dachshund or how to train one.

  2. I thought it gave me a very good idea of the breed help me decide what kind of dachshund I wanted. Now that I adopted one I'm looking for more indept information than this book can provide.

  3. The photography in this book is a plus. It covers the different breeds of dachshunds. Helpful hints on toys also.

4 comments about The Sphynx: The Hairless Cat (Kid's Cat Library).

  1. It is a good book to learn basics about the breed - good recommendation for those not already knowledgeable with the breed.

  2. I enjoyed this book but I wish someone would write a book in more detail on this wonderful feline!

  3. This is a GREAT book on the Sphnyx cat. I have the book and the title of this book in the Amazon system is spelled incorrectly. The actual title is spelled the way the breed is spelled and should read, The Sphynx: The Hairless Cat. So ignore the first angry review - it's wrong!

  4. I'll admit I haven't read the book, but why should I? The breed's name is the Sphynx not sphinx. If the title's incorrect what about the information? I'll wait until there's a book that at least has the breed's name right.

5 comments about The Mediterranean Cat.

  1. All of Hans Silvester's photography books of cats, dogs & kittens in the Greek Cyclades Islands are lovely examples of fine photography. As a fine art photographer myself, I respect Mr. Silvester's level of skill and artistry, and I find his other books very beautiful.

However, when I first became aware of his books about cats and dogs, I was thoroughly dismayed by his choice of subject matter and the way he has chosen to portray the lives of these creatures as idyllic and carefree.

Having been to these Greek islands, I have learned firsthand that the large majority of these poor animals are ignored, injured, or mistreated by people there-anything but "respected." The photographer has omitted portraits of the true conditions for most of the stray dogs and cats in Greece-crippled, starving, dying of thirst, hurt or maimed, with the humans around them barely taking notice.

The full horror of the story was later revealed to me by locals on the islands. Each year, the cats & dogs are allowed to breed uncontrolled, because tourists are fond of seeing the cute animals around town and on the beaches. At the end of each tourist season, as many of them as possible are rounded up and killed (I couldn't bear to learn exactly how), until the following year when the ones that survived begin the cycle all over again. I found this same story on all the islands I visited, including Mykonos, and I was so appalled that I shortened by stay and left Greece altogether.

The situation is a tragedy, and my feeling as a photographer and animal lover, is that Mr. Silvester should not be misrepresenting the condition of the cats and dogs on these Greek islands, especially when it is for monetary gain. I hope animal lovers around the world will agree, and send a message to anyone who profits in any way from the suffering of these dogs and cats in the sun.

  2. You don't have to like cats to adore these creatures, although if you do, you will fall immediately in love. Hans Silvester is a master at his craft and this book showcases his artistry to the nth degree. The contrast of the neutral colored fur of the felines and the pastel washes of the building backdrops, tie together in a flash of eyecolor that makes for breathtaking images.

Silvester's use of lighting, color, camera angles - and obvious patience - illuminates the personalities of this secret society. The photographs make one feel like an anthropologist eavesdropping unseen on their world.

This volume will satisfy those who admire cats, art, photography, the Mediterranean, architecture; or those who simply like to escape to a new world for a time.

  3. I love the Mediterranean Cat. It continues this photographer's outstanding work already known from "Cats in the Sun". I have traveled to Greece many times and Silvester manages to show this country's eternal connection between the cats, the light, and the colors that I, too, have found so irresistable. Another reason I love Silvester's books is how he is able to avoid stereotype cat pictures. I love cats, but I hate how photographs usually show cats in "cute" situations. Silvester's cats are grown-up, independent, strong. Not much "cute" here, but a lot of respect, admiration and understanding for these beautiful animals. A tip: Also try "Cats in the Sun" - I find it even better than the Mediterranean Cat...

  4. Silvester is the ultimate cat photographer, combining almost breath-taking feline images with the mystique of the Greek isles. His mastery of color, texture, balance and line results in not only soul-satisfying photography but also great art.

After a year with his "Cats in the Sun" calendar, I'm looking for the year 2000 edition. Does it exist?

  5. Cat-lovers and photography buffs alike will love this elegant book. Hans Silvester truly captures the simple classical beauty of the Mediterranean and the essence of the cat spirit in his book. In candid format, Silvester's photographs capture the daily lives, at times harsh, at times idealic, of the ubiquitous cats of the Mediterranean. My copy will be prominantly displayed on my coffee table.

1 comments about Whole Kitty Catalog, The: More Than 800 Terrific Toys, Treats, and True Cat Facts - For You and Your Kitty.

  1. For anyone who likes to spoil their cat rotten, this book is an absolute must-have! Much more than a catalog, it contains everything from simple catnip toys to an Italian sportscar with built-in kitty seatbelt and litterbox. And there's gifts of all shapes and sizes for cat lovers, from jewelry to books to home furnishings. There's even an elf's hat to dress your cat for the holidays! I enjoyed every page of this book, learning interesting and obscure facts, picking out items for my Christmas list, and dreaming of what I'd buy my pampered cats if I ever win the lottery. The Whole Kitty Catalog certainly isn't heavy reading, but it sure brightens my days.
