1 comments about Clones, Cats, And Chemicals: Thinking Scientifically About Controversial Issues.

  1. I purchased this book to use with my high school pre-engineering courses when we discuss the impacts of technology, especially biotechnology. I found it to be a good introduction to the issues, but not as in-depth as I'd like. The diagrams that accompany some chapters, however, are a nice touch that is hard to find in other sources. Each topic has a teacher section and a shorter student section. The teacher section has the science behind the issue, while the student section typically has an introduction and questions to consider.

    Topics:
    Animal Cloning
    Domestic Cats and Wildlife Populations
    Stem Cell Research
    Chemical and Biological Weapons
    Robotic vs. Manned Space Travel
    Genetic Screening
    Violence in the Media
    Managed Retreat (coastal erosion)
    Hunting
    The Lottery

The introduction states the book's goal as "to give the science student an opportunity to discuss and investigate the scientific and social issues of concern on a regular basis, and to learn to be comfortable with difficult decision."

1 comments about Abyssinian Cat (Popular Cat Library).

  1. Review of Popular Cat Library: Guide to Owning an Abyssinian Cat by Judah Track

This book is the hardcover version of "The Guide to Owning an Abyssinian CatE by the same author. I'm quite disappointed that this was not pointed out in the general description on the Amazon.com site, as I purchased both books, thinking that they were different books! This book has nice, glossy photos, with several fine specimens of Abyssinian cats and kittens in various stages of development. The text is informative and detailed. It covers many areas Ehistory and development of the breed, temperament and conformation (in detail, too), feeding, grooming, health care, exhibitions, etc. etc. There are sections on the interactions between a new Aby and existing pets, or between a new Aby and children. Also, there is some good coaching on how to train or discipline your Aby. I also like the section on accessories, but I wish there were more details and ideas here. The book includes a general index, but it is too general to be of good use. There is no bibliography or suggestions on further reading, which I think is a miss. Overall I think it is a really good read for a first-time Aby owner, or someone considering to be one.

3 comments about What Cats Want.

  1. I feel this book is repetitive and shares opinion not fact. She refers to a study but doesn't really state specifics. I don't appreciate her references toward pedigree cats considering I have one and don't feel she is extreme or that her health is in danger. Besides, the fact of her opinion of having indoor cats. Everything is seems to be her opinion with nothing to back it up. The history part of the book is ok, but I can get that from just about any book. I highly disapprove of this book and don't recommend it at all.

  2. Even folks who think they already know all there is to know about cats will find new insights by reading Ms. Bessant's book. By learning about cats' innate, instinctual behaviors, we can much better understand, relate to, and enjoy our feline companions! I'm going to recommend this book to ALL of my cat-loving friends.

  3. I have three cats whose behavior I'm constantly trying to understand. I got this book from my local library. I figured I would buy the book if I liked it.

In short, this book had some decent information. However, her writing style was so round about and redundant that it took away from any information she was trying to promote.

There are many better books on cat behavior than this one.

5 comments about Catflexing: The Catlover's Guide to Weightlifting, Aerobics & Stretching.

  1. Well, I was given this book as a gift, and, although it's humorous in a sick sort of way, it's certainly not a real workout. How many cats are really going to sit patiently while you do your third set of curls? No cat I've ever met. I think it would be more realistic if Stephanie Jackson were shown in her poses, covered in scratches inflicted by a pissed-off cat.

  2. I've already tried catflexing, and my cat, Mulder, absolutely loves it! It is actually a good workout, and it is so much more fun than any other workout I've tried.

I don't suppose all cats would be up to the strange ways you need to hold them for the exercises, but if your cat doesn't mind, then I would definitely recommend this book!

    I love this book!

  3. Stephanie Jackson has crafted an endearing and informative "tale" that reflects her lifelong love of both cats and fun exercise. The tongue-in-cheek commentary will beguile even the mildest of cat fanciers--and she even includes several little-known pointers about cat nutrition. Even if your cats decide to remain inquisitive spectators, they'll enjoy watching **you** play with human toys (i.e., barbells) in their stead. Can't wait to see the video!

  4. My caregiver was skeptical, but this book really worked! I can already see some results, and me and my cat Whiskers get to spend fun time together! Thanks a big bunch! Elizabeth Murray.

  5. The best book...um, the ah, only book in its league! Catflexing has got to be the most entertaining yet sincere and informative book I've picked up regarding cats or exercise. What a wacky combination...Jackson's really on to something here.

1 comments about That darn cat.

  1. 'The decision came through from the top. Darn Cat henceforth would be listed in the card index and all reports as Informant X-14. Under the anonymous cloak of X-14, his identity would be held secret for all time, and no one, except those actually working the case, would know that he was of a species other than human...'
-Passage from "That Darn Cat", also published as "Undercover Cat"-

Two bank robbers Dan and Sammy while on a bank job take Helen Jenkins, a middle-aged bank teller. The FBI are stumped and have no leads to catching the crooks. But fortunately, after so long they finally have a lead. But not the kind of lead they, or for that matter, anyone would ever expect. The Randall children, 23-year-old model Patti, 16-year-old Ingrid, and 12-year-old Mike are left alone for the summer while their parents are on vacation. Their cat, Darn Cat (or D.C. as he is called), comes home one night wearing a watch. After a close look, they realize that it is the watch which Ms. Jenkins had been wearing when she had been kidnapped! Informing the FBI, the Bureau sends in Zeke Kelso, to use the cat to lead them to the bank robbers. But nothing goes exactly the way Zeke expects it, too. Snoopy neighbors, D.C.'s mood changes, and a short tempered neighbor stand in the way but everyone knows that time is running out for them...

A totally funny yet suspenseful book, the Gordons certainly have written a book which kept my interest. Not only does the story is read through the people's eyes, we also get to go through the story through the eyes of D.C.! The Gordons imagine what cats think so well that you can almost believe that they had help from a cat to write the book! I love all of the characters, mostly of Patti, Zeke, and Ingrid. I mostly recommend this book to for teenagers and adults, not so much for kids younger than 12 or so.

This book was also originally published under another title, "Undercover Cat". There's also a must read sequel, "Undercover Cat Prowls Again", which I recommend. There is also the terrific Disney movie version of "That Darn Cat" with an impressive cast of Hayley Mills, Dean Jones, Frank Gorshin, Elsa Lanchester, Roddy McDowall, and Ed Wynn. It's very different from the book, changed to make it more a family film. It's hilariously funny and in my opinion my favorite Hayley Mills movie besides "The Parent Trap".

1 comments about Kitty Haiku.

  1. What a treasure! Any cat lover will enjoy this book. It would make a great gift. The poems and illustrations capture the essence of cats with subtle, sophisticated humor. As an English teacher, I appreciate the author's respect for the discipline of true haiku. I use examples from his book to teach my students the correct 17-syllable structure.

5 comments about Dr. Cookie's Guide to Living Happily Ever After with Your Cat.

  1. I have 6 cats and numerous books regarding cat care and management. This book is by far the most useful and readable I have found on the subjest. It is outstanding. I highly recommended for everyone who has a pet cat.

  2. Dr. Schwartz has written a real gem! Her insight into cat behavior is presented in a warm, welcoming, and very entertaining way. The book is well organized into specific chapters and is filled with anecdotes about cats she has known in her years of behavior practice, and her own pets, too. This is a lady that writes from the heart with a sense of humor, a great deal of expertise, and a tremendous love for cats. The line drawings are LOVELY, a few are more cartoon like, but clearly this is a talented lady who has studied her subject well! The chapter on pet loss is written with real tenderness. EVERY cat owner should read this book. If you really want to understand cats and learn to Live Happily Ever After With Your Cat, Dr. Cookie's book is one to read over and over, and give as gifts to other cat people you know!

  3. This is book is fabulous and helps explain lots of cat behaviors and how to live (happily ever after) with them. She writes in a sensible, straight forward manner. I think this book should be mandatory reading for all cat "owners", whether they've always had cats, or whether they are first timers. Since shelters are always getting animals because their former owners can't understand or don't want to deal with behaviorial issues, shelters should consider offering the book to people who adopt cats/kittens. As for criticism of the drawings, people need to get off the dot and focus on the extremely helpful info.

  4. This is a great book. I found it full of helpful information and very thorough. It seems Dr. Schwartz has covered everything. The text and format is easily readable and it is illustrated with very cute pictures. I would highly recommend this book.

  5. I found Dr. Cookie's book to be right on the mark. As I read each page I swear she was writting about my own cats. She really knows what makes cats tick and why. I thought the drawings were cute and comical and her stories were well written and easy to read. It was a refreshing to read a book written by a real Dr. rather than a "self professed expert".
