1. If you love cars, you'll love this book ... even if you've never been within a day's drive of Chicago. The book includes hundreds of fascinating professional photos of dream cars, show cars and production models that appeared at the Chicago Auto Show during the past century. It also neatly blends in plenty of intriguing details about the organization and promotion of one of America's best auto shows. This annual event's history is an interesting saga that reflects the ups and downs of American life during the 20th century. From the early horseless carriages to the grand classics of the '30s and the muscle cars of the '60s, and right up to the concept cars of recent shows, this book includes them all. The authors clearly know their stuff -- captions for the photos (most of which have never been published before in an enthusiast book) are accurate and informative. I have hundreds of cars books, but for sheer browsing enjoyment, this is absolutely one of the best.

1. This book was assigned reading in the Museum Studies program I completed several years ago. I found it to be very readable and useful. It is geared to the person who is serious about preserving the treasures he or she has collected or inherited. Among its lessons is the fact that virtually everything we do to maintain our everyday household objects is not appropriate for objects that we would like to see survive for the long term. This book provides valuable guidance on what can be done to preserve the objects we value most. Today, I am a curator of a diverse museum collection, and still find this book helpful and a good refresher.



2. I'm purchasing my second copy of Caring for Your Collections. I am the curator of a house museum with a very diverse collection and I have found this to be a handy reference guide with easy to follow instructions for dealing with a wide variety of materials.

1. Starting to read in this book, the first thing you think is that you have picked up a book written in the 1950's. The first chapter is so basic, that it seems condescending. The pictures have to be old, or else they just feature items which I have never seen before. Ever seen antifreeze in a 1 gallon metal can? Considering that the title is Automotive Cooling System Basics, the first chapter is forgivable. I consider myself a gearhead, and a lot of this book has information which I am familiar with, but which most automotive mechanics are ignorant of. Very few people will be able to read this book and say they knew it all. I picked up the book, because it had a chapter on water wetters, something I have been curious about for years, and a chapter on non aqueous propylene glycol, something that I recently became interested in. The chapter was pretty thorough and extremely interesting, especially if you are interested in high performance motors/racing. Read this and you will be the most informed person you know on the subject.

5 comments about Collector's Guide to Early Photographs.

1. Perfect book for the beginner in the world of early photography. Details each type of early photo, describes the process used to make it, and explains how to identify it. The author also shares tips on buying: what to look for, what's exceptional, and what to avoid. Gives prices and lots of great picture examples, and details restoration efforts that beginners can and should do, as well as what NOT to do. Loved it and would highly recommend!



2. This book was great. I collect cabinet cards. They are not as collectible as other forms of photographs, and that makes it very hard to find good information. This book was very helpful. It gave me information to date them, and which one are rare, uncommon, and unusual.



3. I was blessed with a box full of old photographs, including some that I called "daguerreotypes", really not knowing what they were. I still have the photos in storage, but after reading this book, and having it on hand to refer to, I feel confident that I will be able to properly identify the photos. Most of these are from the mid 19th to early 20th century and this book covers this period exactly.



4. This is a marvelous book. It is chock-full of information on the various photographic processes of the early 19th century. It takes us from cased images (daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes) to photography on paper (calotypes, wet plates, albumen prints, cartes de viste, cabinet cards, sterographs) to late 19th century processes (dry plate, silver prints, platinum prints) and has a special section on US Civil War images. An exhaustive reference sure to please.



5. This has it all. I've seen a read a lot of collectable type books and this is the best. It contains everything you need to know about early photographs. This doesn't just tell you the prices but explains why certain photographs are valuable and all the history too.
