5 comments about Tomart's 6th Edition DISNEYANA Guide to Pin Trading (Tomart's Illustrated Disneyana Catalog & Price Guide).

  1. This book has alot of pins but the organization makes it hard to find a specific pin. It would be better if it had an index by character.

  2. For the people who complained about the lack of index... how could anyone possibly index that many pins. The index would be as long as the book is. The table of contents is perfectly adequate for narrowing down the page. After that the hunt for the pin is half the fun.

  3. Dinsey pin collecters and traders will enjoy seeing all the pictures in this book. It is the best source for info on the pins but being the only source, they don't have to be that good to be successful.
Criticisms include the fact that they don't list ALL the pins- you have to buy more stuff to get info on the overseas them park pins, Disney store pins, online pins, and others. Finding a pin can be very difficult also as their index is unclear on many items. You have to know where the pin was released to find it in the book and many of us won't guess right on that question. Some of us would like the pictures in the book to be a little bit bigger, too. A final criticism is the price of the book for the numbers of pages- it's expensive.
For someone who collects, the book is indispensable but it is a very imperfect work.

  4. The book was nice, and I enjoyed the estimated values of the pins, but to be quite honest - the index was absolutely horrible. It is near impossible to find pins wihtout searching through several pages. It would have been great if they had the pins listed by number instead of whatever system they have came up with. Hopefully they improve on this in the next edition.

  5. Although it can be difficult to find the items you are looking for it is fun to just look through. A serious collector would probably take this book more as a guide.

  1. This was a great book for photos and history, price guide would have been extremly useful, learned a bit about buttons, yet having the prices laid out in front of me would have been a great benefit.

  2. I have always been drawn to buttons, but didn't know very much about them. This book has very clear photos and descriptions. There are many "museum quality" buttons that are wonderful to see, but I was especially excited to see everyday buttons that I am more likely to find.

  3. For a beginner, who knows nothing of buttons, I'm impressed with the depth of knowledge in this book. It's a must for collectors, or for those wanting to learn more about buttons.

  4. I bought this for my mother who started collecting buttons that she was finding at yard sales and flea markets. She absolutely loved the book. It is very complete in terms of providing information on all sorts of materials and subject matters. There are lots of examples, great pictures, so you can compare your buttons with the ones shown to get an idea ofthewir history/origins as well s some pricing info. Definitely the best book I've come across for buttons as I was looking for this gift for my mom and she's gotten great use of it. (Now I get to hear from her about "oh and this button..... and that button..." It's fun :)

  5. I needed to price and identify over 100 pounds of vintage buttons with very little background in the subject. This book taught me everything I need to know in a very short time. Excellent photos and examples. Highly recommended.

5 comments about The Collector's Encyclopedia of Buttons (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. I found this book very informative and I learned a lot about buttons. I would have liked the pictures to be in color which would help me identify them. It will become my reference book.

  2. It would have been great if the photos were in color, this is something that makes looking and finding the buttons so much easier. Having color photos adds a lot.

  3. This is the very best reference book available under $200. This updated issue is beautiful, includes price estimates of buttons featured, and is the reference book every Button Collector owns. (The only other MUST own button book is Big Book of Buttons, $200, IF you can find one at all.) My button club uses it for many of our meeting programs. "Most Excellent" book! Janice in Niwot

  4. Compiled and written by Sally C. Luscomb (the co-publisher of "Just Buttons" magazine for a 35-year run), The Collector's Encyclopedia Of Buttons is now in a fully updated and significantly expanded reference which presents more than 3,000 collectible and classic buttons from across all time periods, materials, and manufacturers. The Collector's Encyclopedia Of Buttons features entries that cover everything from abalone buttons, to work-clothes buttons, and zodiac buttons. Straightforward, highly accessible writing and enhanced black-and-white photographs, The Collector's Encyclopedia Of Buttons is a one-of-a-kind resource for professional dealers and dedicated collectors.

  5. I like this book as there are many illustrations and after reading the book I had a deeper understanding of buttons. This is an informative book and I would encourage those who are interested in collecting buttons and those advance collecters to read it. Another book similiar to it and I would reccommend is Antique & Collectible Buttons : Identification and Values.

  1. While I'm sure this is a helpful book for the serious and advanced collector, it isn't for the beginner, which I am. I didn't see anything in it's description that would have let me know that, so I wasted my money. I am not a collector and never will be; I'm just a beginner button sorter, breaking up big collections and selling individual buttons, pairs or sets.

  1. I was looking for a book with examples of classic and vintage buttons. This book is perfect for inspiring ideas for your own button designs, packaging and promotion uses. I loved the book so much I bought it twice!!

  2. An interesting book for all counter-culture button fans. Advertising buttons have been around for years, especially prevalent during election time but the contents of this book are more to do with points-of-view rather than product pitching.

The five chapters with five hundred images (Decorative, Promotional, Packs, Websites and Art with ) cover the topical trends in a very visual way with the buttons presented as cutouts with a drop shadow. I thought the Art chapter rather intriguing with images created with dozens of buttons, each one has a bit of the overall picture. In the Promotional chapter, graphic designer Karen Jane has created a font based on the little bit of wire used in the back of all buttons.

The layouts are crisp and colorful and overall I thought this was a lovely little book, the square format helps too.

  1. This is one of those books that I return to again and again. Absolutely gorgeous photographs of buttons through time... you'll be amazed at the variety and beauty of these little works of art! Antique/vintage buttons are a far cry from the simple little things you see today... they were status symbols and more than just a way of fastening clothes. Everything from (real) jewel-encrusted buttons and miniature portraits to astounding mosaics and miltary buttons concealing compasses... with bakelite Art Deco pieces, porcelain from Japan and Goodyear rubber in between. Diana Epstein and Millicent Saffro are true connoseurs, and their love of buttons is evident in every page of this wonderful coffee table book. It's an absolute marvel... thoroughly recommended!!

5 comments about Beads of the World: A Collector's Guide With Price Reference.

  1. THIS GUY KNOWS BEADS. A GREAT REFERENCE BOOK, AND PRICE GUIDE.

  2. After 20 years working in Africa and collecting beads, I find this the best book of its type for people actually going into African markets, American bead shows, and flea markets looking to buy rare or collectible beads. It is not the right book for someone who doesn't yet know the basics about where and how the major types of beads are/were fabricated, how they have traveled, and the ethnographics associated with their past and present uses. (For those subjects, try Dubin, J. Allen, Liu, Picard, and Beckworth's Africa Adorned.) But for ballpark pricing, comparisons, and availability, there's nothing better in print.

  3. I boughtthis book for my mom - she was getting really into hunting for beads (and buttons but that's another story) at yard sales, antique stores etc. She didn't really know what she was buying - just what she liked - so I bought this book for her about a year ago and she has loved it ever since. There are a lot of pictures, descriptions and background info on the different types of beads. If nothing else, it has provided a good foundation for her in her hunt for more beads so she knows a little more about the types/styles to look for (in addition to just what she happend to like)

  4. AND THIS BOOK DIDN'T HELP ME UNDERSTAND THEM ANY BETTER. IT JUST CONFUSED ME MORE

  5. IS MY OPINION OF THIS BOOK. NOT ALL BEADS ARE PRICED AND NOT TOO INFORMATIVE.
