1 comments about They Called Me Mustafa: Memoir of an Immigrant (second edition).

  1. In this tribute to her father Helene Pilibosian edited and coauthored the life story of Khachadoor Pilibosian. As a boy he was caught in the Armenian Genocide of 1915, he was kidnapped by a Kurd and sold as a slave. Years later he escaped and immigrated to the United States to join his father.

The account tells of his birthplace in Turkish Armenia and of the raids of homes in a search for boys who were taken and held for ransom. He describes the bloody roads of the death march, of the caravans where women and children were brutally beaten or killed.

The narrative goes on to tell of Armenian immigrant life in Watertown, Massachusetts. This is a success story of an immigrant, learning business, and becoming a business owner. His daughters later graduated from college, one from Harvard, and one from Radcliff.

Part two of the book is made up of his collected works, poems and stories reflecting facts and emotions going back to his Genocide experiences. His deeply moving poems tell of triumph while suffering and of a questioning but unwavering faith.

He records his feelings as he relates an experience with young friends, "Occasionally we wept inconsolable remembering our parents, whose absence bruised our young hearts. We suffered constantly, and our hatred towards the Turks grew daily. We knew that we were in enemy claws; we knew also that our lives meant nothing to them. We went to bed praying and with fear which kept us awake for a long time."

He tells of heartless Osman in the beginning of the caravan. "Infidels, don't stop, walk, walk, or else I will stick this whip to your backs." These are penetrating, thought provoking, narratives and poems of the Genocide, and of the humble heroes who were marching to their death.

This is a book that should be read by every American Armenian and should be on the reading list of social studies, and political science, courses in colleges and universities throughout the country.
