1 comments about Victorian Woodturnings and Woodwork.
- The woodwork of today is principally more functional than esthetical. The thinking is that we might not afford old-fashioned, complicated forms in modern homes. Added to that, the old forms would strike towards the common strive for simplicity and efficiency in all other domestic utensils and appliances. Today's pictures on the walls are mainly 2-dimensional wallpapers and sprayed paints, no more 3-dimensional decorations as in the past.
If we possessed an old home, where the structures and fittings could be reconstructed, or if we could plan a new house without the dominant functional stamp on it, we might employ a dedicated architect to watch this book together with us and consider, what might still be done in this our epoch ... Or we simply are creative "self-made" men in carpentry.

1 comments about An Everyday Modernism: The Houses of William Wurster.
- This book brings back the many forgotten works of William Wurster. It balances the architect's story and illustrations well. I recommend this book to architecture enthusiasts who want to reach beyond mainstream architecture.

1 comments about New Forms: Architecture in the 1990s (Taschen's World Architecture).
- This book illustrated to us that as we are in tne new millenia, functionalism is no longer adequate to fulfill the purpose of architecture. Rather, art plays a pivotal role to complete the whole picture. There are ample of illustrations & pictures to justify such an argument. Many examples are to be seen in the excess of the 80s. Even though extravagant pieces are rarer these days, there are still odd ones that manage to stand out from the crowd, notably, the Guggenheim Museum in Spain, Groninger Museum in the Netherlands, La Flamme in Japan. The author also does much justice to the much overlooked Asian architecture with emphasis on Japan with discussions on Tadao Ando, Isamu Noguchi, Issey Miyake, Arata Isozaki. There are also discussions of certain architects who transcend the boundary from art, interior design, product & textile design into architecture, & vice versa. Some that are worth mentioning are Frank Stella, Philippe Starck (voila~), Alessandro Mendini, etc. What an exemplary book to feast & I have no hesitation recommending this book to architecture lover worldwide~
