4 comments about Garden Retreats: A Build-It-Yourself Guide.
- When you make a garden, it doesn't matter what type of garden it is. You will still need structure to help tie it to the earth and sky. Whether you opt for a small arbor or a charming playhouse, this book has ideas and plans to help you fill your garden with structures. From practical plans for garden sheds to fun plans for gazebos, Garden Retreats by David and Jeanie Stiles has ideas for any gardener who enjoys working with wood.
Section one of this book covers the basics of building garden structures and fencing. This section covers topics such as planning, types of wood to use, and how to set corner markers. Section two covers garden seating. This section has clear, simple to follow directions for each piece, from a simple garden bench to a lovely pergola. Section three is called special places in the garden, and covers everything from arbors to arched gates. Finally, section four discusses garden shelters. I especially liked the garden shower, but there are also structures such as summerhouses and gazebos, as well.
This book includes directions and plans for over twenty garden structures. The plans are clear and the directions are easy to follow. I have several of these projects on my list of things to do next year.
- Both my husband and I really enjoyed this book. The projects are interesting and the pencil drawings are great. In one case, we used their project as a starting point and went from there.
Most of the projects are NOT simple DIY stuff, so make sure you want do do a project that is covered in the book. It is not a generalized building manual that is applicable to building in general. To complete the projects, you will need a good table saw, radial saw, circular saw or compound mitre saw, a good jig saw or band saw, portable drill or drill press, and power sander such as a 5 or 6 inch orbital sander or belt sander, plus the usual standard hand tools.
- This is one I'll keep going back to -- in fact some of these projects are really do-able! My only caveat is that the type face, although pretty, is difficult for old eyes to make out even with reading glasses. Fortunately the pictures are lovely enough to be worth the price, all by themselves.
- I have almost finished building the summerhouse in Garden Retreats. It overlooks a bay where swan , ducks and other birds come over every day to watch my progress. This has been one of the most gratifying projects I have ever attempted. It has been time consuming, but worth it. I have even put in electric as suggested in the book. I highly recommend this book and this project. Once I got the summerhouse enclosed, I could trim out the interior and it was plenty warm inside the space. I can't wait until summer when I can sit inside the summerhouse and watch the sun go down.

- i have written a persian review based on the codes given in this book in my blog: http://www.yousefi.persianblog.com/
- Understanding deconstructivist architecture can be daunting at first. Without delving into Jacques Derrida's complicated theories on Deconstructivism, this book offers a good overview from Russian Constructivism to Peter Eisenman's and Phillip Johnson's 1988 MoMA exhit - Deconstructivist Architecture.
The only thing lacking is an update reflecting the current use of Deconstructivist architecture. Has the perception of what conotates Deconstructivist changed in the last decade? Is it now more of an aesthetic reference than a theoretical? A follow-up with the '88 exhibit participants and a more current perspective on the practice is left to be desired.

5 comments about Frank Gehry, Architect (Guggenheim Museum Publications).
- Frank Gehry is known for its curvely shaped architect. This books is an assembly of works he has done. (though not complete unless they revised it.) If you did not attend his Guggenheim museum retrospective exhibit, then this could partly compensate for it. I would say the best way to appreciate his work is to visit each building!
- A wonderful exploration into the thought and work process of creative artist and his team. Frank Gehry is to architecture what Dale Chihuly is to glass.
- Well done survey of Gehry's work by Gehry himself, as such, the text is highly informative and the images show his work in its best light. Gehry is without question one of the most influential architects working today, and though I would not necessarily call me a worshiper of his work, im more of a richard meier, santiago calatrava kinda guy, I do respect his awesome talent and his contributions to the field of architecture. If you have any interest at all in Gehry or architecture in general, then I highly recommend you added this to you library.
- I just want to begin this review by saying that this book is a need for any architect's library. The book Frank Gehry, Architect, provides a wealth of knowledge about the architect as well as the structures that he has created over time. Most pages in this book (and there are many) contain full color pictures, sketches, or descriptions about the structure and the architect. This book spans from Gehry's earliest projects to project underdevelopment. Projects range from structures to furniture, and even to art (sculpture like stuff). An aspect that I like most about this book is seeing Gehry develop his ideas and hone his craft. I should also add that this book also contains several models that were created for structures. I think this is essential because it allows beginning architects a chance to see effective model building techniques as well as different ways to convey a feeling which is essential for effective communication with a client. Overall, I would highly recommend this book for all architects and students.
- a very interesting look into the life and times of Frank Gehry. Anyone ineterested in architecture or interested in increasing their knowledge of architecture and architecture's past must read this.

1 comments about The Home Plumbing Handbook.
- This is the text book for the Basic Maintenance Plumbing class at my local college, hence the high price. There are no color photos, few step-by-step photos, no long descriptions. There are many much better book described on Amazon. It is not remotely as good as any of the DIY plumbing books available here at less than 1/2 the price. If you must buy then get a used copy for $4.
I ended up buying Ultimate Guide to Plumbing and find it a much better book. Detailed how-to dicsussion and many color photos.
