3 comments about Vanishing American Outhouse.

  1. I bought this book when it came out as a gift for my father's birthday, he always talked about the outhouse outside his school, from when he was growing up.

The book is humorous, but also a very interesting, and a touching look back at a different time in our history. My father got a kick out of it, but really, everybody that picked it up to thumb through it, couldn't put it down.

  2. Privy plans, photos, poetry and folklore are collected in The Vanishing American Outhouse, an intriguing memoir of an early American fixture, the outhouse. Many photos are in full color and accompanying details cover construction, changes in design and features, and still-standing antiques around the country. A unique, fun guide.

  3. No, seriously. Very humerous, very cute book. Great for history buffs. Makes at great gift, I enjoyed it immensely.

1 comments about Collaborative Planning: Shaping Places in Fragmented Societies.

  1. Healey's challenge is to create understandings of the social construction of meaning and the social embeddedness of ways of acting and thinking to be tied with understandings of the wider forces affecting urban regions and governance.

Collaborative Planning, while still purporting to address the failings of Modern planning, seeks to address the difficulties of undertaking collective action in a world where fact and value cannot be separated, by using an institutional approach which pays heed to the cultural embeddedness of individuals, and the social construction of meaning. Through policy discourse, the institutional capacity of a place can be 'built up'. Planning then, has the potential to shape the building of relations and discourse. An institutional approach would not measure success via assessment of outcomes against goals, but would also look at the institutional capacity generated by the process. All stakeholders are part of the dialogue.

Collaborative Planning sees 'the problem' as essentially being: the changing dynamics of the way we live, global economics, bringing the views of all stakeholders together in a way that recognises power structures, and the role that planning might play in resolving these.

Overall, the book is an excellent starting point for the critical exploration of communicative planning and the governance of urban regions. The book successfully synthesizes practical understandings of urban dynamics with a critique informed by a sound philosophical and political basis. I strongly recommend it, especially to the student and practitioner of urban planning and related fields.

5 comments about Additions: Your Guide to Planning and Remodeling (Better Homes and Gardens).

  1. I thought this book was worthless and a waste of my time. It covered the obvious. I was expecting to see more remodeling ideas.

  2. We are working on doing an addition to our home. We were floundering in making decisions until we came across this book. This book has pictures and ideas and before and after photos and drawings. All of this has been useful in making some decisions before we begin spending money on a contractor, architect or supplies. The text of this book is as helpful if not more so than the pictures. The text discusses types of addition, things to consider, and so on.

I would strongly suggest that anyone thinking of doing an addition consider reading this book before doing anything.

    Well worth the money.

  3. The kitchen volume of this series is much more detailed. Since there are lots of different types of additions for lots of different reasons, it's hard to get into much detail in one book. Still, the advice it does dispense strikes me as sound. It includes a checklist of things you will need to look after if you decide to act as your own contractor, or just check up on if you hire a contractor.

tis is a fine book for those in the early stages of planning an addition who have no experience of such matters.

  4. Just what we were looking for, this great little book has lots of color photos and lots of info to help my wife and me decide what kind of addition might be right for our house. We don't want to build an addition ourselves but want to get a basic plan in mind before going to an architect or builder. Thanks to the advice in this book, we think we now have a good plan in mind for an addition that won't look tacked on but will look as if it belongs to the house.

  5. I found this book to be a helpful overview of the many consideratons that must be taken when considering an addition. There were many examples of different before and after floorplans, as well as photographs of beautifully done additions. There are different types of additions listed along with examples, and checklists to use as you progress.

3 comments about Electricity, Electronics, and Control Systems for HVAC (3rd Edition).

  1. this is a good book for a technician or an engineer trying to get up to speed on the subject. Some typos and misprints are amusing. There are a number of disconnections between the illustrations and the text which occasionally make for difficult reading.

  2. This book gives the reader the needed information for Hvac. It takes you from the basic to the practical side of hvac. It is a good book to start with.
