1 comments about Architecture of the Ancient Ones.
- Every once in a great while a truly magnificent photographic journal appears. THIS IS ONE OF THE GREAT ONES. I waited months for this to be published, and I can truly say that this far surpassed any of my expectations. It is a visual feast, each page a magical photographic account of the mystery of a lost civilisation. The power and beauty of the Ancient Ones and their structures, their homes, are laid forth in these pages. The written commentary is just enough to enhance the visual images. Thanks to both Val Brinkerhoff, and to A. Dudley Gardner for this exquisite piece of work. I highly recommend this, even for those with no prior knowledge of these peoples and their architecture. And for those who love and are fascinated by these ancient cultures, this is a must. A feast for the eyes and the heart.

2 comments about Dominion of the Eye: Urbanism, Art, and Power in Early Modern Florence.
- I am one of Marvin Trachtenberg's students, so I am not the most objective evaluator of his book. However, I wanted to add to the record that it was selected the most distinguished work of scholarship in its field in 1999 by both the U.S. Society of Architectural Historians (it was awarded the Alice Davis Hitchcock Prize) and the College Art Association (who awarded it the Charles Rufus Morey prize). Trachtenberg had already been honored with a Hitchock prize in 1973 for his first book, "The Campanile of Florence Cathedral, 'Giotto's Tower'." The last book to win both awards was Richard Krautheimer's now-classic "Rome: Profile of a City, 312-1308."
- IT IS A SHAME THAT A GREAT BOOK LIKE THIS ONE, WITH GREAT QUALITY IN PRINTING HAS SO MANY BAD DRAWINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS. I HAVE READ THE FORMER ESSAY WRITEN BY TRACHTENBERG, "WHAT BRUNELESCHI SAW" AND THE DRAWINGS AND IMAGES ARE THE SAME FOR THE MOST PART. THERE ARE SOME NEW IMAGES THAT ARE REALLY GREAT AND SOME THAT I MISSED IN THE NEW BOOK. FOR EXAMPLE THE "SKETCHY" PLAN OF PIAZZA DELLA SIGNORIA THAT HE DREW IN HIS FORMER ESSAY, AND IN WICH HE SHOWS OR PROVES HIS THEORY ABOUT THE MESUREMENTS OF THE SPACE IS ABSENT. DID HE REPLACE IT WITH THE SURVEY MAP OF THE SAME PIAZZA SHOWN ON PAGE XIV OF THE PREFACE? I AM, INTRESTED IN HIS MICRO-HISTORICAL STUDY OF THE PIAZZA, LOOKING BACK AT THESE SPACES THAT WEREN'T SO IRATIONALY CONCEIVED. I DID A LITTLE HOMEWORK AND MADE A "BLOW-UP" OF THE SURVEY MAP TO A KNOWN SCALE(1:500m). I STARTED TO CORROBORATE HIS MESURMENTS OF THE PIAZZA AND I FELT THAT ALL HIS THEORY (I HAVE TO ADMIT I LIKED IT) COLAPSED. AS A THIRD YEAR ARCHITECTURAL STUDENT I HOPE THAT SOMEONE WITH MORE SCHOLARSHIP ON THE THEME SHOULD REVIEW THIS BOOK. I HAVE HEARD THAT THE JOURNAL OF ARCHITECHTURAL REVIEW IS INTRESTED IN REVIEWING IT AND I IMAGINE THAT THEY WILL BE MORE CRITICAL. IT IS MY FEELING THAT WITH OTHER DRAWINGS AND MORE POWERFULL ILLUSTRATIONS (I'M NOT SAYING THAT THE ONES THAT HE HAS AREN'T) TRACHTENBERG WOULD MADE CLEARER HIS THEORIES. FOR ALL IT'S SHORT-COMINGS IT IS A BOOK THAT SAYS NEW THINGS ABOUT MEDIEVAL PUBLIC SPACES.

4 comments about The Art of the Birdhouse: Flights of Fancy.
- This book is not a how-to primer. It is a very nicely photographed monograph(?) of birdhouse Mike Dillon was kind enough to share with us. I have spent several hours gleaning inspiration from his sometimes quirky and ingenious use of materials.
- The best PHOTOGRAPHIC book of wacky designs I have encountered, so far, in my search for the ultimate in birdhouse construction. This should always be used as one of the sources for brainstorming sessions when everything just seems to be too boring or simple for your skills. My only regret is that there wasn't EVEN MORE designs to choose from. The Art of the Birdhouse : Flights of Fancy is a book that, once viewed, will leave a nagging sensation with you if you fail to purchase it at first sight.
- This is a lovely book, showing a delightful array of birdhouse forms ... out of an amazing array of materials. DO NOTE: this is a book of tasty photographs. It is not for the person seeking information on design or attracting specific birds.
- Picture the birdhouse you and your grandfather made in your garage when you were nine. I guarantee it did not look like anything in this book. These are not your average birdhouses! Each 'piece' is a unique interpretation. From the melting birdhouse (a la Dali) to the ceramic mosaic birdhouse there are some pretty incredible designs here! (my favorite is "darn woodpeckers" which is a 'traditional' birdhouse, riddled with holes, sitting in a pile of sawdust.)
The beautiful photographs and stylish layout make the book a work of art unto itself I highly recommend this to anyone who a) is into birdhouses, b) is into unusual art or c) has a sense of humo

1 comments about No Voice from the Hall: Early Memories of a Country House Snooper.
- Excellent treatment of the vanishing English Country House. Very sad but also Harris includes some wonderful commentary on local color and humorous personal experiences. A very entertaining book, full of the great names in British conservation efforts and architectural historians, of which he is one, working for RIBA. All in all a very nice little book on not only the loss of great houses but the passing of an age--a civilization gone with the winds of the First and Second World Wars.

2 comments about The Solar Chimney: Electricity from the Sun.
- A short book describing the research of this German researcher
on the solar chimney concept for generating power from the sun.
His research is the basis for the highly publicized plan to build a large-scale version in Australia.
- Jorg Schlaig, professor at the University of Stuttgart and one of the initial developers of the solar chimney concept, is the author of this concise introduction to solar chimney technology. The work, originally produced in German, is an attractive and well presented argument for an energy source that is non-poluting and inexhaustable, and may solve many of our current energy problems. The ideas and concepts are explained in such a way that both lay person and expert may benefit of the many years of practical and theoretical work on which the book is based.Copiously provided with statistical and financial data, the book is a must-read for energy professionals, decisionmakers and politicians everywhere.
