1 comments about The Jekyll Island Cottage Colony.

  1. A meticulously researched and highly engaging book detailing some of the remaining "cottages" (if you consider a 16 room house with 5 bathrooms a cottage) at the Jekyll Island colony. If you're familiar with the subject, you'll already know that some of the wealthiest men of the late 19th and early 20th century made Jekyll (off the southern coast of Georgia, near the Florida border) their getaway of choice; some going to the extent of building elaborate residences for their brief sojourns South. This book details the histories of some of the remaining houses; who built them, who enjoyed them, and how eventually death and financial decline caught up with just about all of them. It's loaded with photos, and not just boring old architects' shots of the finished products- we are treated to casual snaps of the families having tea outside, playing with the kids in the pool, or going for a ride in the pony cart. Add to this the aforementioned well-researched history of the families and houses themselves, and you have a book that you won't be able to put down. I'm a dedicated remainder-and-used book buyer, but I'm going to gladly play Amazon for a new copy of this. It's absolutely worth it. Enjoy!

1 comments about Mies van der Rohe - IIT Campus: Illinois Institute of Technology.

  1. This is a nice book deadicaqted strickly to the IIT campus. It gives a brief history and understanding of the campus and its buildings. The black and white photos are compeling and are the focus of the book. It is a great and fast recource for a general understanding of this campus. I wish it had been longer and had more text is all i can really say bad about it.

5 comments about Timberframe Interiors.

  1. Although this book is not very old, the interiors are excruciatingly dated and uninteresting. My public library was the very happy recipient of it.

  2. Both books Dick Pirozzolo has been involved with concerning Timberframe homes are a necessary addition to timberframe home owners libraries. Suggest this purchase be your first step.

  3. Excellent book, well written, easy to read, beautiful pictures and colors. Gives lots of ideas to think about and information that helps to make choices.

  4. With this book you can introduce yourself into the world of home decor. I was fascinated with much of the advice and learned so much about defining space, using color, lighting enhancements and selecting furnishings and finishing touches. The book highlights spaces such as dining rooms, living rooms, great rooms and bathrooms, giving detailed advice and tips on how to get the best look for your space. Interiors also taught me to examine my own personality before starting the journey that will turn my new timberframe home into a reflection of me, my family and the way we like to live.

  5. Timberframe Interiors is a delicious book to be savored by anyone who is in the process of decorating their home, or to be enjoyed by anyone else who simply wants to allow their imagination to soar. Although most of these magnificent homes are expansive, the photos and text provide a rich variety of tips to help anyone add flair to the decoration of even a modest apartment. I can't imagine anyone not being inspired by these homes that approach cathedral-like majesty.

4 comments about Haiku Cottage.

  1. What are known as trophy houses have been stricken with this century's disease of obesity. In stark contrast are what architect-author Ashley Smith presents as *Haiku Cottages* - - spare, with a hint of New England, and a refreshingly eloquent breath from the Far East.

It is delightful to have these drawings for 'small & definitely beautiful' dwellings likened to haiku poems. Most school children become familiar with haiku in the elementary grades. The book is appropriately slim and a chapter shares six haiku, including this choice one from Basho (1644-1694): "A bee/staggers out/of the peony." Such sweetness comes also from the satisfaction of good design. Small spaces have a way of encouraging minds to stretch while excess possessions are jettisoned.

Reviewer mcHAIKU would miss having *nooks & crannies* that might result from a 2-story plan, and stairs do set forth a minimum daily requirement of exercise. Habitat strongly influences the way we live & think. It would be interesting to observe the creativity that springs from those who live in dwellings so necessarily close to Nature.

Ashley Smith has shared his ideas in a way, not pushy, but quiet and conversational. You may discover that you are quite eager to draw your own design, as suggested, and invite the concept of 'retreat' into your life.

  2. This little book touched my soul

  3. While Smith is to be commended for his advocacy of minimalism and simplicity, this book is of little practical use in designing a house. It's tiny, for one thing, and contains very few useful technical drawings and very little factual prose. The prose and drawings aren't inspirational in an abstract way, either -- mostly, they're just mushy, New Age-ish platitudes about minimalism. They're not worth the cover price. Check out Tremblay's "Small House Designs" (ISBN 0882669664), which is far superior and just a few bucks more expensive.

  4. Haiku Cottage's principles are wonderfully thought out. The drawings are clear and FUN! Somewhere we consumers have lost the idea of what a home could be. Mr Smith reminds us once again.

1 comments about Frank Lloyd Wright's Imperial Hotel (Dover Books on Architecture).

  1. This book is about the Imperial hotel built by Frank Lloyd Wright in Tokyo during the Meiji era. It has been quite famous after the Kanto Big Earthquake in 1923 because it was not collapsed by the earthquake.
