1 comments about Collectible Miniature Perfume Bottles (Collectibles).
- Although this is a cute little book with nice pictures, it is lacking in content. Too much history and not enough pictures of what is available today. It did not include any monetary values, not enough pictures of miniatures from the past 25 years, not very interesting ...actually it was nice to look at once, but otherwise a waste of money. I have about 40 of these little bottles and only about 8 were pictured in the book. Pay a little more and get a true reference book.

2 comments about Bottles from the Deep: Patent Medicines, Bittlers, & Other Bottles from the Wreck of the Steamship Republic.
- Very enjoyable read. Brief, but succinct in discussion of the bottle types recovered from the wreck. Provides interesting history of the various bottle types. Great photography of the recovered treasures. I read it in a couple of hours. Can't wait for Oddysey to publish more on their discoveries and recoveries. Be sure to read The Lost Gold of the Republic for an excellent presentation of the history and discovery of the SS Republic and the development of the Oddysey Marine Company. It was extremely well written and an enjoyable read. Both books are highly recommended for the shipwreck buff or treasure collector.
- "Bottles from the Deep" is, I think, the first published (in the paper sense) product of Odyssey Marine Exploration's impressive archaeological excavation of the steamship Republic, and doubtless it will not be the last. Some archaeologists shrink from the idea of a marine salvage firm doing good archaeology, but with the Republic Odyssey has shown how it can be done; the Republic fieldwork is a model for deep-ocean archaeological investigation. What remains is to see how the data recovered are used and shared with the profession and the public. Ellen Gerth's book suggests that Odyssey will do well in this regard, too. The book provides a concise summary of the history of the shipwreck and its excavation, and then plunges into fascinating details about the various types represented among the thousands of bottles recovered. Stephen Sweet's Infallible Liniment, Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup -- it's amazing our ancestors survived the 19th century swilling such stuff. Very handsomely illustrated, Gerth's little book is a contribution to the archaeological literature that's fun to read. Not too big to be a stocking stuffer for one's favorite bottle nut, either.

1 comments about Message In a Bottle: Observations From a Maine Bottle Hound.
- This book is a wonderful read for not only bottle lovers but for anyone. Heartfelt and amusing observations about family and life. The author shares interesting and entertaining facts about bottles and his own adventures. The book goes deeper than just insights about the world of bottle digging. Makes you step back and think about your own life and how much you appreciate the gifts God has given us. I think this book will be of interest to many people. Highly recommended..Makes you want to go and dig up a bottle!

2 comments about Classic Irish Whiskey (Classic Drinks Series).
- I have a good few whisk(e)y books, mostly on Scotch. This is by far the most well written - its an excellent read. In addition, if you happen to have some whiskey to hand, its informative and adds to the pleasure of sipping the whiskey. I even agree with the author on the delights of Green Spot and Jameson 1780. Only two whiskeys missing from this 1997 book - Downes no. 9, and Maher's Special Whiskey, both blended by traditional pub blenders in Waterford. Don't hesitate - buy it.
- I received my edition from the chief distiller in Cooley Distillery while doing an operations project in college. Anyway, I wasn't much of a whiskey fan before that but when I gor this book my whole outlook on the "water of life" changed. From start to finish its expertly put together. He gives a grading in verbal terms (not the usual out of ten rubbish) to each whiskey and tells of the strong and and not so strong characteristics of each whiskey. Murray gives excellent background information on the distilleries and the history of the different brands. Its hard not to love whiskey after reading this book especially when Murray has such a poetic passion for the stuff. Maybe you still won't like the taste of whiskey after this but you'll certainly have a greater sense of what you are drinking id you decide to do so. Anyway, maybe it's enough to know there is more than just taste to a bottle which is enough to read this book. Top Stuff.
