3 comments about Miller's: Postcards: A Collector's Guide (Miller's Collector's Guides).

  1. This short book does a fair job of picturing the breadth of post cards: from an Austrian 1897 card to a 1990's Barbie card. There are many categories introduced, with some great pictures, but I would have appreciated more information, such as how to buy cards on EBay, or how to send cards. The "Where to buy" section has no dealers in the United States. The US post card history is sparse, particularly in dating cards; for example it doesn't include dates for divided backs (1907). Some basic definitions such as "linen" aren't presented.

  2. I personally found this book sketchy and superficial.Unless you are for example a general dealer who just wanted a few basic guidelines about a subject you previously knew nothing about then please avoid like the plague...

  3. For someone considering getting into postcard collecting and hasn't decided on a specialty yet, this guide is a great overview
of what postcard collecting is all about. The guide also has limited information on postcard values. These days you can
find out most of this information on the web. Certainly the experienced collector will need to look elsewhere.

1 comments about Collector's Guide to Children's Books, 1850 to 1950: Identification & Values.

  1. This book is an embarrassment. Virtually every page of book titles and listings has at least one glaring error. In the area of juvenile series books it is both incomplete, full of errors, etc. Examples are easy to find- Border Boys Series incorrectly dates the publishers, Bobbsey Twins description woefully incomplete, Battleship Boys lists only a few of the titles in the series and does not mention the first publisher which was Altemus, Airship Boys Series fails to note all of the books and both of the publishers. These mistakes are just on the pages I glanced at for series books. I suspect the same errors of commision and omission exist for many other books. Get yourself Mattson's guide for series books and do your own research for anything else. This book does have a nice glossy cover. Totally form over substance.

1 comments about Old Books in the Old World: Reminiscences of Book Buying Abroad.

  1. Although I love "Books About Books";I ,like the majority of those who love books and reading ,know very little ,nor have had the experience of searching for, buying and selling Antiquarian books and Ephermera. While never part of that world,I found this book about it, a delightful read.
To the authors of this book,it was their whole life. They not only had the experiences they tell us about;but also made a successful career of it and made their living at it. They are no longer with us; Leona Rostenberg passed away on March 17,2005 at the age of 96,while Madeleine Stern passed away on August 18,2007 at the age of 95.They spent their entire adult lives living and working together. The world of books and their friendship were everything to them.
This book is mainly comprised of the journals they kept of their trips to England and Europe during the years after WWII ,from 1947 to 1957.
Their descriptions of what things were like after the destruction and hardships of recovery after the war are as much of what this book is about as the rare books they are able o find.Of course,as in any endeavor, the people you meet and the friendships that develop along the way,are what most enjoyments of pursuits are all about.
It is amazing ,the amount of 15th -18th Century books that were available ,for what seems today like pittance. The books they find, and talk about are virtually unknown to me,and very shortly after being found ended up in special collections in libraries, universities and with wealthy collectors. The experiences of the authors lasted for only a decade or so .That was the time when money was hard to find, collections all over Europe had been plundered, scattered about, and great rareties could be found in many bookstores. All that soon ended, when word got around and hords of dealers started to started to swarm the continent and these sorts of gems were scooped up and rapidely skyrocked in price.Where real treadures could be found for the price of a meal or less, they soon became available at a "King's Ransom";if at all.
A wonderful read ,for Bibliophiles and book buyers;from the novice to the astute Antiquarian.

  1. This is the most important book yet published in English on Carolingian manuscripts, although the price is ridiculous for a 193-page volume! I will try to get CUP to bring out a paperback edition. --Michael Gorman

1 comments about Reflections on the Connolly Book of Hours.

  1. Via one "medieval best seller", the Connolly Book of Hours, this slim paperback provides a fascinating introduction to the world of illuminated manuscripts and those who created, purchased and used them. Most of us have probably seen illustrations from such books, but hesitated to do much more than admire their beauty/age. This book contains not only beautiful illustrations but a a succinct account of the creation of such manuscripts. Without speaking down to you, this book manages to turn what might be an intimidating subject into a very enjoyable read. It certainly whets your interest in life in the Middle Ages. The reflections accompanying each illumination were written by a variety of indidivuals within a college community and have a unique charm of their own. Perfect reading for a summer afternoon!

5 comments about The Official Vintage Guitar Magazine Price Guide, 2002 Edition (Official Vintage Guitar Magazine Price Guide).

  1. Great tool for determining not only the value of your guitars but guaging their increase/decrease in value. Keep in mind these are closer to retail prices and used by some stores to price the intruments they have for sale. "GC" for example does this in some of the stores I have been to. It's a great way to study the market by buying each new issue annually for comparison from the years before.

  2. Simply put, page after page have inaccuracies and incomplete information. If a novice like myself can find the errors it makes you wonder who in the heck the "experts" are. Do they proof read this before it goes to print? I am talking EASY things that most guitar players know.

It is just disappointing that a book that has an impact on market pricing is so inaccurate.

  3. This price guide is a good reference book for anyone interested in buying, selling, collecting or edjucating themselves on used and vintage guitars, basses, and amplifiers.

  4. Excellent guide !! . It's the most complete guide I'd ever seen..
A good source for collectrors and not collectors too. Good Descriptions and details.. And very very complete..
You will find every intstrument you are looking for.

  5. One can rarely perform any complex and important task, be it manual or cerebral, with a single tool. Research on any subject is a prime example; a single reference source is never adequate. This guide, while not as complete or exhaustive as some might like, is simply one of many reference tools, and an extremely useful one. Were the guitar market static, it might make sense to put together a voluminous compilation aspiring to be all-inclusive and unerringly accurate. But the guitar market is anything but static and this guide simply provides the best "snapshot" that it can at this particular time.

I must disagree with those other reviewers who say the prices in this guide are so vastly off the mark, and that ebay represents the new paradigm in pricing information. My own experience during the last few years has been repeated instances of wishful sellers justifying their asking prices by pointing to the "Buy It Now" prices of the burgeoning numbers of "Power Sellers" and "ebay Store" entities. Those prices obviously have no significance in defining the current market, because the vast majority of the listings expire without generating a single bid. Even more interesting are the numerous cases in which sellers have said that their guitars sold, at or above the asking prices, and then a month or two later the same sellers have the same guitars listed again. Were it to happen often enough, such fraudulent generation of apparent sales could help drive the market upward, just as those sellers are obviously hoping.

While ebay sales represent valuable pricing data, the authors of this guide have certainly tried to exclude sales to apparently collusive buyers, and probably weighted their analysis in favor of those sales that generated numerous bids.
