1 comments about The Other Side of Middletown: Exploring Muncie's African American Community.
- It gives me great pleasure to write the first review for this magnificent book. Not only is it for the student, it is for the lay reader as well.
As to the qualitative researcher-this is a must. It brings together many writers, including those in the community, and gives us a real picture of what is going on in Middletown (Muncie, Indiana) in the present. This community came together to tell their story, along with Lassiter, Campbell, and others.
For the lay reader, this is easily read and understood. My only question is...why don't other communities do as this one has??? Perhaps telling our stories, talking with one another...that might make a difference in the way we get along in America. Not only is the story about race...it combines ethnic beliefs with age and gender differences...
I rec. this book for anyone interested in what can and will happen when a few people try to make a difference...

2 comments about King: A Photobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr..
- The words of 1998 MacArthur Fellow Charles Johnson's ccoupled with the poignant photographs of Bob Adelman climax in this excellent literary work that chronicles the life and legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The wonderful photographs and literary prose compliment each other beautifully throughout this masterpiece, detailing the life and democratic stuggles of King. Beginning from the early childhood of Mr. King to his untimely death,
Adelman's photographs depict a very young King with his family. It provides insight into his his upbringing and illustrates the foundation that culminates into the life of the great civil rights leader. It continues to depict his educational pursuits and ultimate marriage to the lovely Coretta Scott. The books carries the reader through the voyage as a young King rises to prominence as a preacher, his continued quest for racial equality, and mainly his persistent call for agapic love in conjunction with nonviolence. Also, shared in this tome is intimate photographs of King's time spent with his loving family and information about King's life that may not be well-known. Although nearly 300-pages, this book capitvates the reader from cover to cover. All in all, Johnson and Adelman are to be commended for their efforts! This liteary piece is nothing short of superb! - I have many photography books in my personal collection, and I have several on the civil rights movement, but this book is by far the best I have seen. The book combines the work of several photographers - including Alfred Eisenstadt, Charles Moore, Henri Cartier Bresson, plus some lesser knowns - who have been individually recognized for their own work. The photographs are a true documentary of Martin Luther King's life and death with many photos I have never seen before.

1 comments about Raising Her Voice: African-American Women Journalists Who Changed History.
- This book is an intelligent portrayal of the important role of black women journalists in shaping historical events, a role which has been largely ignored or forgotten by many. This book serves not only as a necessary historical record, but as a lasting tribute to the triumphs of these eleven women.

1 comments about The Man Who Cried Genocide: An Autobiography.
- William Patterson's autobiography begins with a bit of family history at the end of slavery in the U.S. and their migration to northern California. During Patterson's youth, he discovers his ability to work hard to help support his family and succeed despite much difficulty in his studies. In Harlem in his late 20's he earns a law degree and eventually passes the bar. The biggest focus concerns the Sacco-Vanzetti case and Scottsboro Boy's trials which help to inspire Patterson's civil rights activism and communism, and the apex of the book is the petition, "We Cry Genocide," that he and Paul Robeson present in Paris and to the U.N. The chronicles deal less with his personal life as he gets older and more on his politics and activism. Some photos are included of his hamily and his work.

2 comments about Michael Jordan ....In His Own Words.
- I accidentally bought this tape instead of an excellent book of Jordan quotes by Janet Lowe. The book was so good I'd pass copies out to kids that I thought could use some mentoring or role modeling. This tape, however, is hardly worth the time to listen to it, and absolutely not worth the price. A verbal 'People' magazine piece at best. In disgust, I am throwing away the 3 copies I bought so that no one else should be victimized. Please do the same.
- I like a lot this book,please,please,please... I dont know what to say,I just like this greate book.
