3 comments about Free-Range Poultry.

  1. I find it interesting that Robert Plamondon didn't like this book. Perhaps it's because he is the editor of a competing book which is recommended above instead of this one?

I haven't read this book, I'm trying to decide if I want to. It is recommended by Murray McMurray Hatchery.

  2. This is a very comprehensive book written especially for those who are interested in getting started with free-range poultry. Although the author is British and writes for the British market, she still includes much information that is specific to regulations here in the US. Breeds; housing needs; land management; feeding; poultry management; eggs; table birds; breeding and rearing birds; showing birds; marketing; commong problems and diseases. The problems and diseases section could be a little more detailed, but for those just interested in learning about this way of raising poultry, they could easily take what they learn here and then have the knowledge to look for disease management books with more information. I highly recommend this book! :^)

  3. This book was a great disappointment to me. Instead of learning about free-range poultry, I learned more than I ever wanted to know about the astonishing overregulation of the British poultry industry. The topic is apparently too broad to leave much room to talk about poultrykeeping.

1 comments about The Parrot: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.

  1. He starts off by explaining a bit about parrots in general, then goes on to talk about the history of parrot keeping. He goes from the wild caught birds that used to be kept as pets leading up to the hand fed birds, or at least domestically raised birds, that are now the only acceptable way of obtaining a parrot for a pet.

He gives information geared toward helping a prospective bird owner, decide which type of bird would be right for him or her, by giving general descriptions of habits, sizes & noise levels of some of the more commonly kept parrots. He has also provided good clear pictures of the birds that he profiled.

The chapter on housing provides good information on cages, perches, dishes, toys and food. The next chapter goes into more detail on the food requirements of parrots.

Throughout the book, Mr. Freud has several little side boxes where he goes into more detail on a certain aspect of what he has written about.

This book has excellent information and tips for someone just thinking about obtaining a first bird, but it also has information that current bird owners would find interesting.
