  1. The title is misleading, for this is definately a beginner's book. The photos are excellent and the type set is large. But this is certainly not a professional's book!! If you're looking for an easy to read beginner's book this one is fine.I would never recommend this book for seasoned budgie keepers.

  1. Don't waste you're money. I'm a book nut. I buy more than $2K worth of books a year, and this is the first time I've ever reviewed a book. That's because I can't let you waste your money on this joke.

When I decieded to learn about aviaries and such, I ordered How to Build Your Own Aviary, Cages, Nestboxes, Etc. and $ave a Bundle: The Ultimate Step-by-Step Guide, and How to Build Everything You Need For Your Birds: From Aviaries . . . To Nestboxes because they each had high ratings. I ordered the subject book because it had the most recent publication date (January 2007) and no negative review (no review at all).

What a rip!!! The book itself bears no publication date, however it is obviously a facsimile (xeroxed) of a much earlier work. The diagrams are unbarably readable, the typeset was probably awesome back in the 1930s when the book appears to have been written. Prices for materials are given in shillings and pence. Photos are comparable to pre-world-war one (1) europe. It even discusses how to be sympathetic to native birds you've just caught. I.e. it appears to predate any laws prohibiting one from capturing back-yard birds.

No, I did not read this book through. Why bother! I'm sure if you read the thing it would have some very wonderful insights for someong living in the early 20th century. I would not be so harsh if the book was not represented as published in 2007. If it said originally published 80 years ago or so, that'd be fine. I bought the book because it appeared to be the most recent work on the subject.

The other books, though not perfect, each have something to offer. If you want to build cages, get the McDonald book. It gives more than enough details on cages and nestboxes. It has a plan for a fairly large, nice aviary, as well as a plan for a cage breeding room, but does not go into details. This would be the plan A aviary though, if you've got the money to do it right.

The LaRosa book does not give any info about cages though it does talk about nestboxes and gives adequate info in that area. The LaRosa book is the one to get if you want a samll outdoor colony type aviary, but want to spend as little as possible. It give details for these aviaries. Although these are completely functional, I would liken them more to chicken coops then to a modern day aviary.

2 comments about All About Your Cockatiel (All About Your Pets Series).

  1. Brief, but not dumbed down. It is a good, fast read. It is great if you have kids and cockatiels, cohabiting.

The vocabulary and concepts are more advanced than the large print. However, reading this book together would be a great sharing and growing experience, if you have kids.

They could read it outloud, and you can explain what the words mean, such as egg binding, nutrition, clutch, minerals ... They can expand their vocabulary, and develop their sensitivity toward the needs of other living things.

The large print and concision might also benefit those who love birds, but have a hard time seeing smaller print.

Even if you have no need for the larger print and concision, it is still a useful book.

  2. For those who are new owners of cockatiels, this book is a must have. Don't be put off by its brevity. All the important questions such as, "Is my cockatiel a boy or a girl?" are answered within. Topics such as training and taming, diet, cage space, breeding, and health are dealt with succinctly yet clearly. So whether you've already purchased a feathered bundle of joy or are thinking of getting one, check this book out. The price won't ruffle your feathers.
