1 comments about Bantams and How To Keep Them (Poultry Series - Chickens) (Poultry Series - Chickens).

  1. C. A. House originally published this book in the 1920's, having a half-century of solid experience under his belt. Paraphrasing his words, "I had my first big win ... at the Dairy Show of 1890." The original price of this book was "One Shilling and Sixpence" which is retained on the authentically reproduced cover.

I couldn't resist buying this one, and I'm very glad I did so. House wrote about what he knew from his own successes and failures as a breeder, fancier, and exhibitor. The nineteenth-century prose is elegant and parsimonious. No more could be said on this subject in more or fewer pages. House clearly stated when his opinions were injected into the otherwise factual text. House was not a man of secrets: rather he was a man who promoted the keeping of Bantam chickens more than he loved his own accomplishments. He would be delighted, I think, to know that his work remains meaningful into the 21st Century.

The small size of this book can be deceiving if modern patterns of verbosity are generalized to the past. House wrote no more than necessary to convey his thoughts accurately and skillfully. In fewer than 120 pages, C. A. House has given the reader more useful, accurate information than can be found in many any of the larger books on the subject. Though his title and subjects are Bantams, keepers of large fowl will find this work nearly as helpful. I find it a welcome addition to my family library, and it will be read over and over in the years to come. I can think of no higher praise for a book on this subject. I don't know the exchange rate for "One Shilling and Sixpence" into 2006 American Dollars, but it's worth every penny.

1 comments about Bird Care (Quick & Easy).

  1. From canaries to parakeets to parrots, Diane Morgan's "Bird Care" offers quick and easy, step-by-step instructions in the selection, care, feeding, and training of birds. The informed and informative text is enhanced with the inclusion of 'quick-tip' boxes and full-color photography throughout. Of special note is the practical advice about keeping the birds well groomed and healthy while living a long and happy life. The addition of a list of resources and an index, make "Bird Care" a particularly 'user friendly', comprehensive, inexpensive instruction guide -- and ideal for novice bird owners and community library Pets & Wildlife reference collections.

5 comments about African Gray Parrot: Purchase, Acclimation, Care, Diet, Diseases With a Special Chapter on Understanding the African Gray Parrot (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. This book is obviously dated as it was written back when wild caught birds were available due to the fact that domestic raised birds were difficult to find. Annette, therefore gives information on taming a frightened bird instead of on a new baby African Grey Parrot loving to be cuddled.

She provides good information on the need for proper sized cages & play areas as well as information on making your bird's own climbing structure.

She has listed a good selection of foods to feed your bird, although there is no mention of a pelleted diet, which has now become a good basic staple in many birds' diets.

She has a section on diseases & how to keep your bird healthy with good information for you to follow.

The section on Understanding African Gray Parrots is very thorough and informative. This section, combined with the good information in several of the other sections, outweigh the dated information in a couple of the other sections of the book.

  2. The publications (books) will be rated as soon as I have read them 2 times. However I would like to write an ordinary paper for publication in a well recommended international journal.

Can you recommend one? Or shall I surch for it myself?

The topic should include: How to bye an African Grey. Do not mix up parrots and dogs. Dogs, the humans establiched contact with 14.000 B.C. (Boessneck, 1985). Coresponding time for parrots is 200 years. Education of dogs is based on punischment/reward. That does not work on parrots. The parrot indetifies the punisher as a hawk or an other kind of predator.

Just a first idea of the content for a short publication from a beginner i this "field of science". Time for sending the paper to referees approx, April-01.

I am a professor in metallurgy since 1983 (metals forming) and have written written other kinds of articles outside my professional discipline( Fish for aquarium, "Tropheus" from the lake of Tanganyika in Africa)

So I am not a beginner in writing

  3. This book has some good info if you dig really deep and know what you are looking for. It talks about things to do to your AG that are out of date, and could be bad to your birds health. It also speaks of taking the birds out of the jungle, which does not happen very much any more, if at all. If you want a good book about african greys, look at the copyright date, it says a lot.

  4. I found that there was a lot of good information in this book, HOWEVER, the author speaks about the bird being "captured from the jungle" and brought into a domestic situation. I CAN NOT stress how much that this is the absolute WRONG way to obtain ANY bird. When purchasing African Grey's (and any other animal for that matter) make absolute CERTAIN that it came from a domesticated breeder, and NOT from the wilderness.

  5. if you could direct me in the area of a author who writes about the african gray parrot in spanish, version i would be most thnkful

1 comments about Zebra Finches.

  1. This was one of the first books on zebra finches I checked out from the library, when I first started getting interested in the birds, and it helped me immensely. It explained why certain foods were necessary, and what vitamins can be found in what, it gave me the information I needed to know what size to make my cage. It's been a great help to me, and now I've had my birds for over a week and they're wonderful and happy.

5 comments about The Large Macaws: Their Care, Breeding, and Conservation.

  1. I love this book it has beautiful pictures, lots of information on everything. I would recomend to to any bird owner...

  2. The book is an excellent resource for anyone who owns a macaw and provides valueable insight to those considering a macaw. Considering it was published in 1996, the information is still practical and worthwhile. I do not agree with the opinion about hybrid macaws but it is minor compared to the vast in-depth reading it provides regarding husbandry, geographical information, physiological information, etc. A must-own for anyone who loves these magnificent birds!

  3. Although three people are listed as being the authors of this book, the impressive list of contributors as photographers, design, consultants, collaborators and acknowledgments goes on for three full pages.

This is a huge book (534 pages with the index starting on page 511) that certainly appears to cover everything about the large macaws that anyone would want to know.

The book is divided into three main parts with several chapters in each part. The first is Aviculture, written mainly by Joanne Abramson, the second is Veterinary Medicine, written by Brian L. Speer and the third is Conservation, written mainly by Jorgen B. Thomsen.

Over 300 beautiful colour photographs are used throughout the book submitted by 77 photographers as well as many detailed drawings by Marsha Mello.

Nutritional analysis charts are provided for nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables and pelleted diets.

It would be much easier to say what is NOT in this book than to list everything contained herein. Other than the fact that there is nothing written by myself, (grin) I could not think of anything else that could have been included here.

This book IS very expensive, but if you have a Macaw - or even if you love Macaws, you should really see if you can get your hands on a copy. I am sure that you will realize that it is worth every penny.

  4. I found this book to be very informative regarding almost all aspects of owning and living with a macaw.

  5. ...after reading and seeing all the information that is given, it was well worth it. This book has 100 times more information than any of the other books on macaws. It was definately worth the price.

4 comments about The Guide to Owning a Cockatiel.

  1. great book! excellent photography, and highly recommended for those who own or those who are interested in aquiring a cockatiel.

  2. Ms. Barrie has a good understanding of cockatiel personalities, color mutations, and training, and this is an OK guide in that regard. However, the book is very outdated regarding diet: Other than the all-important fresh greens, it recommends nothing but seeds, a diet that is guaranteed to greatly reduce your cockatiel's potential lifespan of 30 years and diminsh his health and comfort by leading to illness. This can also be costly and heartbreaking for you.

Seeds are necessary for small birds because they contain enzymes they can't get anywhere else--but a tablespoon a day is plenty. Pellets, table foods, cooked grains and legumes, and fresh fruits and veggies should make up the other 90% of the diet. The book also recommends offering grit, which is no longer recommended by vets and other experts in avian health.

For friendly, accurate, and scientifically current guidance, check out "Birds for Dummies" by Dr. Brian Speer, an excellent avian vet.

  3. This is an excellent book for a new Cockatiel owner. The photos are great, the text is easy to follow. There are a lot of useful tips that make it easy to take care of your new pet. The bok was just what I was looking for.

  4. If you are looking for a Cockatiel book that is very basic, straight to the point, and somewhat blunt, then this is a good choice for a book. But for those who like substance, you might want to try another. Even though you can receive a broad point of view on how to care for your Tiel, I felt that this book just wasn't what I was looking for; too basic. But this book does come with a good explanation on variety of cocktiels, and I absolutely adore the pictures she used.
