1. Basics: 2004, 1st edition, softcover, Spanish only, 143 pages, 91 color plates, 333 species, a range map for each bird
   
   This is a brief, concise identification guide covering the southern third of Argentina (excludes Chile), the Falkland Islands, and some of the Antarctic islands.
   
   For those of you familiar with the authors' other works, you'll quickly recognize these plates. They are taken directly from the previous, and still in print, "Birds of Argentina and Uruguay: A Field Guide". Patagonia y Antartida is simply a scaled down rendition of the larger book. The same paintings, text, and maps are kept in this reduced version. If you own Argentina & Uruguay, you already own Patagonia y Antartida. Consequently, my book reviews of each are nearly the same.
   
   There are 333 species illustrated, with 3-4 on each page. The majority of the birds are illustrated with multiple views (e.g., perched vs. flying; dorsal vs. ventral) and are accompanied by a very short (20-60 words) physical description of the bird. Only the minimum of text is given to range or habitat - typically only a dozen words.
   
   The artistic quality is decent but not great. The physical structure of the passerines is captured with better realism than other groups such as the gulls, terns, shorebirds, ducks, or petrels. These latter groups have misproportioned wings, bills, chests, or length-to-width ratios. Additionally, similar species (e.g., elaenias, flycatchers, furnarids, etc.) will expose the limitations of the minimal descriptions and small paintings.
   
   The range maps are tiny at 1x2cm; however, they do effectively illustrate the generalized range of the birds.
   
   To date, this book is available in only Spanish. English and scientific names are supplied with the bird and are also in the index.
   
   This book is listed with a high (up to US$70) on some sites. The price reflects limited availability and not quality.

This Argentina regional bird guide is not available in English, but includes English common names, so it can be used in conjunction with Birds of Argenina & Uruguay by the same authors which is available in English. The illustrations are not as good as those in recent bird guides for other countries in South America and elsewhere.

1. Hi! I liked the book. I have another I prefer but...I think you need to have a few books regarding cockatiels, just to filter out some things. And this is a good one. And Yes! is the answer to the one reviewer who mentioned, Do birds really get caught in the frig and stove?
   Cockatiels are so quiet and quick People need to know this. A friend told me a friend of hers killed her Cockatiel by not knowing it was by the frig when she opened it and she close it on the poor thing. So its good to re remind and make people aware of all the hazards that can and will happen if you don't watch them closely.



2. While I've had plenty of pets, I've never had sole responsibility of a cockatiel before and I thought this book would be useful in helping me get started, but I found it to be a little cheesy. It's all pretty much common sense, I mean who would put a cage full of food with a bird in it, in the shower with hot water? Or let a bird get stuck in the oven or fridge? Does that stuff really happen? Anyways I was hoping I would learn something new, and didn't really learn anything at all. You can go to Pet-co and a get a free info sheet that is a lot more useful.



3. This is my favourite book about cockatiels, including with regard to illnesses and how to proceed in case of emergencies as not seen in other books that I owned about this subject.

1. An endearing little book full of simple, and delightfully named recipes for specific birds. The directions are clear and the ingredients common place and easily located. This book is fun, easy to use, and makes for great family projects.
