5 comments about The Guide to Owning a Quaker Parrot (Guide to Owning).

  1. Have been pleased with the quality and content of information; good resource guide for new Quaker parrot owners.

  2. If you are researching the Quaker, as a previous bird owner, this may not be the book for you. However, if you are a first time bird owner, I would give it 5 stars. I would have preferred more specific species information. Thank you.

  3. i ordered this book and received it long before i even expected. the book is in like - new condition. i recommend this seller to anyone who wants quick service and you get exactly what they are advertising.

  4. Great pictures, makes you want to run right out and purchase your parrot! Very informative also. I enjoyed it.

  5. If you are oriented towards a quaker but don't know much about parrots yet, this book is the best to have a quick resume of everything is important to know. Takes little time to read it all but at the end your ideas will be a lot clearer, you'll know the essential to make your decision about getting a companion quaker or not; and in case you've decided to go for it, the essential to take care of your quaker and make it healthy and happy. In a second time you can deepen in your knowledge with more complex (but potentially confusing for a novice) books on the subject.
The text is quite objective about the level of attention and cares they require but... *beware*, the photos are so endearing that you are not much likely to resist the urge to get one of this cute and intelligent birds right away and start cuddling it...

3 comments about Parakeets: How to Take Care of Them and Understand Them (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. Best book for beginners! Info filled all the way!

  2. Our family has been living with parakeets for about four years now and we refer to this book on at least a weekly basis for answers to various questions about diet, socialization and behavior. It's very well-indexed --(E.g., Should your budgie have broccoli? Just look under "vegetables") -- which makes using the slim volume easy and productive. It isn't very detailed or tremendously scientific, but for the average parakeet owner/lover, it's a good little book to keep under your cage next to your millet spray!

  3. If you've never owned a parakeet before, this might be the best place to start...lots of basic background information, will encourage you to read more about budgies and, if you haven't already, go out and buy one (or several!) Recommended! Also, very cute photographs and nice presentation.

3 comments about The Professional's Book of Lovebirds (Professionals Book).

  1. THE PROFESSIONAL' S BOOK OF LOVEBIRDS by John Coborn covers their natural history, cages and aviaries, nutrition-health and hygiene-breeding Lovebirds and other topics. Coburn provides suggestions for aviaries and cages and recommends aviaries because Lovebirds are ornamental birds, not necessarily good companion animals (although I have a very loveable Peach-faced (Agaponis roseicollis) Lovebird hand raised from a young chick).

Coburn's book includes over 180 color photographs and large type, so it is certainly visually appealing and relatively easy to read, although perhaps a bit dated (the suggested reading section won't include anything issued after 1991). For a surfeit of information about genetics and typology, Dr. D'Angieri's ATLAS on Lovebirds can't be beat, but for more comprehensive albeit easier to access and handle smaller book, you may want to buy Anne Appleyard's THE LOVEBIRD HANDBOOK published in 2001.

  2. This book does not at all explain what to feed your birds. breeding, nesting, health care it should be called a professionals point of vew good pictures but dont fully expain mutation coloring. Was very dissipointed in this book TITLE is very mis leading if you want a book with pictures of lovebirds with out full discription of them it is ok but other wise it is totaly useless

  3. It is a book with very potential, in spite of presenting some appearances. It presents images of a lot of quality and quite beautiful. It could go beyond, and to show more new mutations, as the ones that exists here in Portugal.

4 comments about Macaws and More: Selecting the Right Macaw Taming and Training a Macaw's Good Health (Caring for a Parrot).

  1. Nice glossy pictures. Text very uneven. Much of the advice is dated or simply wrong. Seems like "cut and paste" of some old parrot book from the 70's. We now know that parrots can speak some words in appropriate context and with comprehension. We don't give dog kibble anymore. I don't know of anyone who gives their parrot grit... The book seems to be pure merchandising..it looks pretty so buy it, you find out too late that the content isn't very useful.

  2. This book has gorgeous pictures, but the text is completely worthless. It reads like a so-so beginner's book on parrots from the 1970's. The is much misinformation, such as the statement that macaws do not talk! Do not waste your money on this book like I did.

  3. This is by FAR one of the WORST books I have read or had the misfortune of ordering in a LONG time. Here is a quote straight from this book: "Complement the fresh foods you prepare for your macaw with parrot mixes and dry kibble DOG food." Ummm....They call it "DOG" food for a reason!! Considering the variety of pelleted foods out there made specifically for birds recommeding DOG food is pathetic and inexcusable. The other sad fact in this book is that it seems to condone the breeding of hybrid macaws =(. All in all, there is NOTHING worth recommending about this book. The glossy pictures don't make up for information which in the VERY LEAST will drastically and negatively affect the health and lifespan of your companion bird!!! PLEASE do not buy this book, as neither the publisher (TFH) or the author deserve to profit from a book that would not even be worth using for cage liner!!

  4. I am very impressed with the research that the author, (Loren Spiotta) instilled into this book. It is very detailed with many helpful pictures. This book is excellent for the person that is thinking about buying a macaw, or wants more informative tips on one that they may already have. I have read it, and will use it for future reference.

3 comments about Why Does My Parrot . . . ? (Why Does My . . . ? series).

  1. To the person who wrote the review stating about the Back remedies I say that homeopatic remedies can be a valid alternative medical treatment in some cases, (it is even in people many times) and Rosemary Low states that one should be "reffered to a homeopatic vet", and not just administer different essences as one please to a sick parrot. Closing this parenthesis I think this book is an excellent reading for new parrot owners who want to learn the most on how to keep their new friend happy and healthy, for old owners who want to understand some behavioural motivation of their parrot, and lastly for breeders who sell hand fed babies and should therefore understand parrot education and much more (hopefully to the advantage of their potential buyers).

  2. This book does a great disservice to pet owners by its endorsement and recommendation of unproven alternative treatments.

"Bach" remedies contain alchohol and have never been tested or proven effective as treatment for any medical or behavioral problems by any recognized scientific study.

  3. This is a great book with excellent basic information and advice written for the PET parrot owners. The format is especially helpful for finding the appropriate information quickly. I found the chapter on different species profiles to be the least interesting; It could have been omitted. Still, I consider this book a "must" for all first-time pet parrot owners and those who do not have a lot of time to research and read on parrot behavior.

1 comments about Bantams and How To Keep Them (Poultry Series - Chickens) (Poultry Series - Chickens).

  1. C. A. House originally published this book in the 1920's, having a half-century of solid experience under his belt. Paraphrasing his words, "I had my first big win ... at the Dairy Show of 1890." The original price of this book was "One Shilling and Sixpence" which is retained on the authentically reproduced cover.

I couldn't resist buying this one, and I'm very glad I did so. House wrote about what he knew from his own successes and failures as a breeder, fancier, and exhibitor. The nineteenth-century prose is elegant and parsimonious. No more could be said on this subject in more or fewer pages. House clearly stated when his opinions were injected into the otherwise factual text. House was not a man of secrets: rather he was a man who promoted the keeping of Bantam chickens more than he loved his own accomplishments. He would be delighted, I think, to know that his work remains meaningful into the 21st Century.

The small size of this book can be deceiving if modern patterns of verbosity are generalized to the past. House wrote no more than necessary to convey his thoughts accurately and skillfully. In fewer than 120 pages, C. A. House has given the reader more useful, accurate information than can be found in many any of the larger books on the subject. Though his title and subjects are Bantams, keepers of large fowl will find this work nearly as helpful. I find it a welcome addition to my family library, and it will be read over and over in the years to come. I can think of no higher praise for a book on this subject. I don't know the exchange rate for "One Shilling and Sixpence" into 2006 American Dollars, but it's worth every penny.
